TOURNAMENT LEADERS HITS B.Cole 8 RUNS K.Shaw 9 RBI's D.Roth B.Cole 9 AVG. D.Roth .538 WINS J.Salcido 3 Sunday, April 22 Hustlers bats on fire in Palm Springs Under beautiful sunny skies and weather in the mid 70's the Hustlers were able to win their second tournament in three tries this season. Going back to October of 2006 the Hustlers placed first or second four times in five trips. The Hustlers are still not at full strength so it's hard to determine exactly where their potential lies. Matt Shaw and Luis Garcia were once again missing from the lineup but East coast transplants Kyle Smith and Greg Bernier were able to fill the holes quite nicely. Kasey Shaw continued to hone his skills at shortstop and has become this years Danny Cole filling in at any position and doing so very well while continuing to swing a hot bat at the plate. Dave Hess continued his assault on the elusive .600 mark at the plate collecting 14 hits while Daniel Roth with 13 RBI's knocked him and Kenny Shaw (10 runs) in. Doug Shaw was maybe the hottest Hustler of all batting a scorching .688 while nephew Kasey stepped up batting .563 and knocking in 10 runs from the ninth spot in the order. Joe Janicke and Larry Watts jr. as usual displayed gold glove defense while batting over .300. Steve Proffit was also steady at the plate batting an even .500 with 7 runs and 7 RBI's. On the mound the ageless "Papa" Joe Sacido was nearly unhittable giving up just 10 earned runs while posting a perfect 4-0 record. Bobby Cole chipped in a win in the quarter final game just missing a no hitter and batted .700 for the tournament legging out 5 triples. Coach Steve Proffitt commented, "Palm Springs has always been a great tournament for us and one in which we probably have more fun off the field. The times we spend together after games really brings this team closer and it carries over making us better on the field." The Hustlers would like to give a big thanks to John Dwyer Construction for sponsoring us in the tournament and making it possible for us to have so much fun. Below are some pics from the team party and game recaps.
Kenny and Kasey Shaw set the table scoring 7 runs in 7 at bats and Daniel and Dave knocked them in with 3 RBI's each. Joe Salcido ran his record to 5-0 on the season. Hustler runners-up in Palm Springs
This weekend the Hustlers took the field once again without a full squad. Work obligations and a last minute emergency left them without any spare players and it meant that Bobby Cole would have to pitch six games if the team was so lucky to get that far. Saturdays first game pitted the Hustlers against familiar foes, the Latin Heat. The Heat came out swinging and put up 14 runs against the Hustlers in a time shortened 4 inning game. The Hustlers started a comeback in the bottom of the fourth plating six keyed by a Dave Hess double but ran out of time to complete the comeback. There would be more...later. Going back to last tournament the loss marked the first time in over two years that Hustlers ace Bobby Cole had lost two consecutive games and he was determined to get his season turned around. Cole's season turned around winning the next 4 games against the Beer Nuts (7-6), Extreme (4-2), Rebels (7-3) and the P.S. Express (10-1). Joe Janicke, Kasey Shaw and Dave Hess had the hot bats on Saturday and Doug Shaw and Larry Watts jr. got hot on Sunday. In the championship game the Husters met up once again with you guessed it, Latin Heat. The Hustlers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning on a Steve Proffitt2 RBI single and was able to hold the Heat bats at bay until the top of the fifth when with the Hustlers leading 5-1 it started to unravel for Cole. Finally out of gas, Cole pulled himself after several hits and a couple of walks giving way to a very capable Kenny Shaw. Kenny held his own keeping the Hustlers close but the damage was done with the Heat plating eight runs to take the 9-5 lead. The Hustlers clawed back with 3 in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run on second in the bottom of the seventh but came out one hit short and had to settle for second best. It was another strong showing for the Hustlers and with the runner up finish they were able to build upon they're lead for the overall points championship in the SCIFL alliance. The next tournament will again be in Palm Springs on April 21-22. Check back for game recaps. Tuesday, February 20 Hustlers champs in first NAFA Alliance tournament of 2007
Here's a brief recap of the weekends games. Game 1 vs. Just Us was a back and forth game where Joe Salcido pitched a gem allowing only one earned run but had the Hustlers losing by a run going into the final inning. Joe Janicke, who had earlier hit a solo homerun tied the score with heads up Hustler baserunning by scoring from second base when the shortstop threw to first after bobbling a ground ball. In extra innings it was Just Us scoring first in the eighth with two runs. There was no quit in the Hustlers though and they left the defense on the field with three of their own in the bottom of the inning capped by a Marcel Bernal single to score Bob Cole and secure the 7-6 win. Game two vs. the Silverhawks was a one sided affair with the Silverhawks scoring four in the first off a very rusty Bobby Cole. He was however able to settle in and allow only one earned run over the final six innings. If the pitching was bad the offense was even worse. The normally potent Hustler lineup was only able to muster three hits, two of them on the infield in the 6-0 loss. In the last game of the day the Hustlers knew they needed a win against the Palm Springs Express to secure an important first round bye for Sunday's single elimination round. Kenny Shaw went behind the dish for the first time as a Hustler while Joe again took the mound and again pitched a gem allowing only a last inning run in the 5-1 win when the game was all but over. The Hustlers got all they needed in the second inning on four consecutive singles followed by three hit batters and a walk. In Sundays first elimination game the Hustlers were paired agaist the Latin Heat. Bobby Cole took the mound and the first inning again was a thorn in his side. He walked the first three batters and allowed them all to score for an early 3-0 Heat lead. Two more unearned runs crossed the plate in the third before B.C. had to give way due to shoulder stiffness. Joe once again stepped up and shut down the Heat offense. A turning point in the game came when in the bottom of the fourth with runners on 1st and 3rd and 2 out, Kenny Shaw made a diving stop in the hole and threw out the runner to end the inning. The Hustler offense woke up in the top of the fifth keyed by Daniel Roth's three run HR to get the Hustlers within one. In the sixth Daniel doubled to tie the score and Joe Janicke doubled to give the Hustlers the lead which was held to give the Hustlers the 7-5 win. In the Championship final Joe Salcido took the mound against the Demens who are very similar to the Hustlers with a young, scrappy group of guys with a few veterans sprinkled in. This was another see-saw battle with the Hustlers going up 5-1 after the first, the big blow being a Dave Hess HR. The second inning was high scoring with the Demens scoring four and the Hustlers scoring five more to make it 10-5 after two innings. The Hustlers added one more in the third to end their scoring but the Demens weren't done. They showed their fight by getting three in the fourth and two in the sixth but Joe was able to buckle down and hold them scoreless in the final frame to keep the 11-10 win intact.
Wednesday, January 31 Hustlers ready to kick off the 2007 season It's February and it's time to get ready for another year of Hustlers Faspitch softball. Hustlers manager Bobby Cole has tweaked the roster slightly from last year adding depth to their already potent lineup. Last years team will be back but with a couple guys taking a more limited role. The Husters have added youth with Luis Garcia who figures to give us solid glove work at shortstop when Jay Lopez or Danny Cole are absent. They have also added Gabe Trujillo to the tournament team. Gabe has been playing for a few years with the Hustlers in leagues and has proved he's ready for primetime. "These two guys are very valuable to us in that they can and will play any position on the field and are very athletic. It makes it easy to plug them in any spot we need them and both are great character guys who will to whatever we need them to do." remarked Cole. The the third and latest addition is Joe Salcido. Salcido, Cole and the Shaws go back several years to the powerhouse Ringer teams of the late 90's and early 2000's. Joe is a crafty pitcher that The Hustlers have been wanting for over a year to complement the power pitcher Bobby Cole and Joe has shown that he can stymie any offense, even those at the A and B levels. In the outfield Dave Hess, Matt Shaw, Kasey Shaw, Joe Janicke will be back to turn hits into outs while in the infield Doug Shaw, Steve Proffitt, Kenny Shaw, Jay Lopez, and Larry Watts will again make spectacular plays look routine. And once agian, behind the plate will be last years MVP, Daniel Roth calling the pitches and keeping everyone in line. Hopes are high that this year will be the Hustlers' best ever with the ultimate goal being a NAFA A Championship in Des Moines, Iowa in August. Hustlers 2-2 in "C" Nationals finish tied for 17th
