Dec 29, 2009
With 2009 winding down, we’re taking another look back at an exciting year in Warwick sports. Here are some of the most memorable stories from the year that was:
Seniors lead Vets lacrosse
The Warwick Vets girls’ lacrosse team had a historic year in 2009. The Hurricanes went 10-1 en route to clinching the regular season league championship, marking the first time in the program’s history that Vets went into the postseason as the No. 1 overall seed. And the ’Canes lived up to that billing, knocking off Classical and East Providence in the first two rounds of the postseason before falling to South Kingstown in the Division III championship game.
“They were on a mission this year,” Vets coach Charlie Benson said. “The ultimate goal was to win the state championship, but I’ve told them all along that the biggest challenge was just to get there. And they wouldn’t be denied. They didn’t care about the glory for themselves; they cared about the glory for the team. As a coach, you can’t ask for more than that from your players.”
It was also the end of an era for Vets. The team graduated eight seniors; Danni Vazquez, Kim Courcy, Steph Fraser, Emily Cotter, Katie Veyera, Alex DiMauro, Beth Schofield and Melissa Cole, and saw Benson, the architect of the program, step down at the end of the season. Vazquez, DiMauro and Courcy each finished among the top-five scorers in Vets’ history, with Fraser topping the all-time list.
“I don’t know if there is anything I can say about those girls that hasn’t been said already,” Benson said. “They have given it everything they’ve had all along and, as good as they are, they were never selfish. They always had their eyes set on this year and I couldn’t be prouder of these girls and what they’ve accomplished.”
