Trailblazers finish 2nd at Memorial Day Show Down
Ian Murray
Ian Murray - 2007-2008 Trailblazer

The Huguenot Trailblazers finished 2nd in the 2008 Huguenot Little League Memorial Day Show Down.  The Trailblazers' bats came alive in each of their three pool games, scoring a total of 46 runs while only allowing 5 runs.  By winning their pool, they advanced to play a tough Glen Allen Extreme team that also won their pool with a 3 - 0 record.  In the Championship Game, the Trailblazers plated 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning, then allowed 5 runs in the bottom for a 5 - 5 score after one inning.  After allowing 6 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning (the only inning the team lost all weekend), the Trailblazers were only able to score once more in the top of the 6th.  Good relief pitching by the Extreme silenced the Trailblazers' hot bats.  An overall great showing by the Trailblazers with all 17 players contributing in each game.  A special thanks goes out to all the parents who helped make this tournament a success - especially team mom Karen Michael.

We also want to wish Ian Murray and his family the best of luck as they move to St. Louis.  For anyone on Eteamz in the St. Louis area . . . you've got one heckuva ball player coming your way!!!  The Trailblazers will miss you, Ian.

USSSA States
USSSA State Tournament
Trailblazers Finish Second in State USSSA.
The Huguenot Trailblazers finished second in the USSSA state tournament. The Trailblazers started the weekend off by beating a good UpperDeck club 5-1. The UpperDeck team won the consolation bracket. The Trailblazers then beat the Manassas Bandits (last years 2nd place USSSA team) 12-3. The Trailblazers were seeded 3rd after pool play. The Trailblazers started the championship round against a very good Chesapeake Bay Express team. The Express won the state AAU title this year. The Trailblazers manufactured 3 1st inning runs and made it stand as the Trailblazers won 3-1. The Trailblazers then faced another tough Beach team, the Tidewater Drillers. The Drillers finished 3rd in the State AAU Tournament. The Trailblazers won 10-9. The Trailblazers then faced the Virginia Wildcats North club for the state USSSA title. The Trailblazers were down 7-0 heading into the bottom of the last inning but rallied back hard; only to fall short 7-6. The Trailblazers took home the 2nd place trophy. Great job boys.

Trailblazers Take 4th in State Qualifier
The Huguenot Trailblazers battled the snow and cold to take 2 games Saturday morning. The Trailblazers beat the Hanover Heat in the opener 10-4 then pulled out an extra inning win over a strong Suffolk Warriors team. The Trailblazers won their pool and advanced to the championship round. Sunday brought more snow and cold. The Trailblazers edged the Tidewater Bombers 4-2 to advance. The Trailblazers next faced a good Upper Deck squad. The Trailblazers trailed 8-5 going into the last inning. The boys put together a display of unselfish and timely hitting to pull out a 9-8 victory. This placed the Trailblazers in the semi-finals against a very good River City Sluggers team. The Trailblazers lost and took home 4th place.

Trailblazers Finish Third in Quest for the Best
The Huguenot Trailblazers finished 3rd in the Quest for the Best Tournament held in Prince George. The Trailblazers started the tournament by outlasting the Hanover Heat 12-10. This was followed by a tough win over a very good Chesapeake Bay Express team 5-2. This game was played through a cold drizzle and rain. The Trailblazers won their pool and advanced to play the Tidewater Bombers on Sunday morning. The Trailblazers outlasted the Bombers 8-7. The Trailblazers then faced the Express in the semi-finals. This was a back and forth game. The Trailblazers rallied to tie the game in the last inning; took the lead in extra innings, only to lose in the bottom of the 7th inning 10-9. Great game for both teams.

Trailblazers Win Cove Creek Tournament
The Huguenot Trailblazers won the 10th annual Cove Creek Classic with big wins over the Central Virginia Hurricanes 12-4, GSA all-stars 10-0, Herndon all-stars 11-4, Virginia Vipers 10-3 and the Richmond Bombers 15-2. All the Trailblazers contributed. There was great pitching (5 pitchers combined on a no-hitter), fielding, aggressive base running, but mostly a continual pounding of the baseball. Great tournament guys.

Ripken Fall Classic
Trailblazers Win Ripken Tournament
The Trailblazers finished an exciting weekend by beating the BCC Bombers and winning the Ripken Fall Classic Championship game 13-3. What a weekend. The Trailblazers started off Saturday morning against the Lionville Pride. The boys were excited to be playing on Fenway field. Mac Caples and Tyler Carrico went back to back over the Green Monster as the Trailblazers won the opener 11-1. The second game of the day was a great ball game. Trey Rose pitched 7 hard innings. The boys could not shake the BCC Bombers and subsequently lost 4-3 in 9 innings. The Trailblazers started Sunday with a chance for the playoffs. They needed to win but could not give up more than 3 runs. Cole Ceperich, Porter Reinhart and Eric Mayo held the Catonville Cubs to 3 runs as the Trailblazers won 8-3. It now was down to tie breakers. It came to the last tie breaker, a coin toss. The Trailblazers took heads and won. This brought yet another game with the Richmond Bombers. The Trailblazers started off slow and trailed early 12-3. The Trailblazers then took a patient disciplined approach to every at bat and slowly fought back in the game. Triggered by clutch at bats from Eric Mayo, Porter Reinhart, Luke Lowery, Mac Caples, Tyler Carrico, and then a big blast from Nathan Kirby, the Trailblazers tied the game 12-12. Conner Melton put the Trailblazers ahead for good, then shut down the Richmond Bombers as the Trailblazers won 17-12. The championship game would be a rematch of an earlier game. The BCC Bombers would be the last obstacle for the Trailblazers. Gregory Mehfoud and Conner Melton shut down a potent Bombers offense limiting them to 4 hits and 3 runs. The story of this game was small ball. Bo Nahstoll started the offense with a simple hit to left. Then, after a few walks and Colton Konvicka's perfect suicide squeeze, the Trailblazers were ahead 5-2. The next inning provided more of the same excitement; a single, a walk, a hits batsman another squeeze, a slash bunt, a hit to left and next thing we knew, the Trailblazers had mounted a 13-3 lead. Conner Melton was awarded the Championship game MVP. The tournament MVP went to all the boys as they all stepped up big when called upon. Special mention goes out to Bryan Miltenberger who has been out with a broken thumb. We look forward to your return. Great job boys.

Trailblazers Win Memorial Weekend Tournament
Memorial Day 05
Huguenot Trailblazers, Memorial Day 2005
The Trailblazers put it all together and won the Second Annual Memorial Weekend Tournament. The Trailblazers used the long ball (6 home runs), small ball, great pitching and clutch plays in the field to win 4 games and claim the crown. The Trailblazers started the weekend by outlasting the Richmond Bombers 8-3. Next up for the Trailblazers were the Prince William Express. This is a top ranked team from Northern Virginia. The game started slow for the Trailblazers as they trailed 2-0 after the top half inning. The Trailblazers came back and thanks to a key bunt took the lead and never looked back, winning 12-2. The Trailblazers then faced the James River Dawgs. The Trailblazers ousted the Dawgs 8-3. The finals put the Trailblazers against the Upper Deck Baseball Club. The Trailblazers outslugged Upper Deck to win 9-2. This was a great tournament for the boys. Every player had a key contribution somewhere in the tournament to assist in the tournament title. Every player received a tournament game ball. A special thanks goes out to the former Trailblazers coaches and players present and cheering. A very special thanks goes to all the parents and volunteers that made this all possible, especially Ann Hillsman.
