Huber Heights Youth Basketball Association: About Us

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN

(Written for the first HHYBA Yearbook)

If you were looking for a youth basketball program in 1986-1987 in Huber Heights, you could not find one. Although you could have gone to bordering communities for youth basketball, there was not one available in Huber Heights (the YMCA program had recently moved to Fairborn).

Deb and Bob Jacobs, whose son enjoyed playing basketball, could not understand why a community the size of Huber Heights did not have its own program. In voicing this, it became apparent others felt the same way. One of those voices, Mike Milligan, in a phone conversation with the Jacobs’ about youth basketball, questioned, “Why not?”

Deb Jacobs had experience with the YMCA youth basketball program. After a few phone calls to interested people in the Spring and Summer of 1987 the groundwork began on the kitchen table at the Jacobs’ house. Mike Milligan, Ted Whited, Becky Whited, Ralph Meyer, Bob Jacobs, and Deb Jacobs, after many hours of work, created the “Huber Heights Youth Basketball Association.”

“We are all very pleased at the success of our first year. We have, however, suffered our share of growing pains. We hope to grow and learn but never forget the reason we are here”... “For the Good of the Kids.”

CURRENT

From its meager beginnings, the Huber Heights Youth Basketball Association has steadily grown. Now supporting over 80 recreational basketball teams, there are over 700 kids now playing basketball in this organization, ages ranging from 6-17 years old.

Over the years, HHYBA has seen board members come and members go. We have seen kids grown up in our organization and now are back as coaches and prospective board members for future generations of the Huber Heights community.

After 20 years, HHYBA is still going strong. We, the current members of the HHYBA Board of Trustees, have never forgotten the reason the league was first started, and why it continues ... “For the Good of the Kids.”

The goal of our league is to provide a safe and productive environment that enables children to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication, and sportsmanship. We facilitate the development of strength and character in every child that participates. Participation in our league is open to all boys and girls in Huber Heights.

We are sustained by the efforts of volunteers who display an extraordinary amount of commitment and hard work, ensuring that our league is a positive influence in the lives of our children. We also strive to provide a service to our community by providing a healthy outlet for children, opportunities for the community to gather together, and endless hours of entertainment.

Sportsmanship Teamwork Strength Character Discipline Dedication We welcome all children, regardless of race, creed or national origin. Our league is registered as a non-profit organization. We appreciate the generous support of the community, local merchants, and civic organizations.
