*****************************SEPTEMBER HITTING TIP************************
The position of the hands/bat when the stride touches down is the first critical element in the swing sequence.
Most hitters move the top half of the body as soon as the ball of the front foot hits the ground. This is not good. It places the hitter in this position when the front foot plants:
1. Front shoulder is much higher than the back shoulder
2. Hands have dropped or moved forward.
The typical major league hitter, in slow motion video, when the stride foot lands has:
Ø Front Shoulder slightly lower than back shoulder or level shoulders.
Ø Hands are back with the bat angle between a one o'clock or two o'clock angle.
The lower body (front knee) moves toward the ball The lower body (front knee) moves toward the ball while the hands stay back. This creates Torque.
It is extremely important to notice how major league hitters use their hands last in the hitting sequence.
The stride foot plant and the lower body upper body rotation begin before the hands release.

HITTING FLAW: DROPPING THE HANDS
"Early Hand Movement Causes An Uppercut or Bad Timing"
A VERY DIFFICULT HABIT TO CORRECT.
The "Dropping of the Hands" before the swing is the cause of this flaw. The hitter is guilty of letting the hands drop too soon or to drop below the hitter's normal "swing launch" position.
The results of this type swing are:
1. Hitting the bottom half of the ball causing frequent POP-UP OUTS.
2. Hitter strikes out allot because of bad timing caused by "bad hand travel" before the pitch.
3. The batter may also make contact with the ball's extreme "top" causing those dreadful dribblers just in front of the plate.
Suggestions For Correcting This Hitting Flaw!
1. Keep The hands high and at the top of the strike zone
2. Know where your perfect "LAUNCH POSITION" is and keep your hands close to that location.
Never let your hands go below this point.
You should always "work" through or down to the ball.
COACHING POINT: Make sure that your hitter is not over striding thus causing the whole body to drop during the swing (including the eyes and hands.)
Have your hitters perfect:
A short compact stride and...
A short compact swing.

HITTING DRILL
This drill will promote better use of the lower-body in the swing.
DEVELOP QUICK HIPS & PROMOTE USE OF LOWER BODY
· Place a bat behind the waist, horizontal to the ground.
· Hold the bat in the pit of the elbows.
· Assume a normal batting stance and watch an imaginary pitch being delivered.
· Execute an inward-turn, a short stride.
· Finish in the proper contact position.

A LEFT-HANDED SLAPPER
Hey Coaches and Hitters...........What do you see in this picture? Does it look like this hitter has a chance to be successful? How is her form? This is Caitlin Lowe and she is a three-time first team All-American and USA National Team member from the 2006 National Champion University of Arizona Wildcats. She is a senior this year. Check their web site by following the above link (A Left Handed Slapper).
1. Her stride with the rear foot is toward the picher.
2. The hands are back.
3. Her front shoulder has stayed closed/in.
4. Her head is in great position so BOTH eyes see the ball.
I think she has a great chance to get on base. Check her Individual Stats at the Wildcats web site.
