Highland Park Tennis Association: junior tennis program
![]() | |
| summer 2008 |
The Highland Park Tennis Association Junior Tennis Program offers youths in our community with a source of recreational activity in a safe and constructive environment. In addition, we emphasize the importance of education which is supported by our educational and life skill agendas. With these components in place we are be able to enrich the lives of those in our program by building character and boosting self-esteem. The result of this experience will be the foundation for a complete and socially responsible individual.
Our tennis program will be held on Saturday mornings from 9:00am to 11:00am, starting on May 2nd, 2009 and continues through August 22nd, 2009. This is a free program and is open to children ages 4-18. All equipments will be provided, however, parents must register their children prior to participation.
The Junior Tennis Program consists of three major categories:
-
The Seedling Program starts from ages 4-5 years old and is 1 hour in length, and we incorporate some Quickstart Tennis concepts. Our coaches will engage the children in fun tennis based games while creating the basis for proper techniques that will be essential for future development.
-
Quickstart Tennis is open to juniors ages 6-10. Children will play and train on modified size court.
-
Junior Development Program is open to children ages 11-18, who will be separated into groups depending on their skill level and abilities.
Our highly qualified coaching staff will teach:
→ Techniques
→ Physical fitness
→ Footwork
→ Strategies
→ Rules and Etiquette
→ Scoring
→ Competitive match play
Qualified juniors, who are interested, will be able to tryout and join teams that will compete in USTA Junior Team Tennis league during the summer and winter seasons. These participants will also be competing with other organizations such as ours throughout the city. Additional practice will be scheduled as needed for those who are on the teams.
Our initiative for 2008 and forward is to give each participant in our program a tennis racquet of their own, if they don't already have one. Instead of loaning them a racquet for just 1-2 hours a week, they will have one to play with whenever they want. We believe that this will prove to be a very beneficial strategy because of two reasons: 1) it will teach the children the responsibility of taking care of their equipment and 2) it will encourage and allow them to continue to play when they leave the lesson. To our knowledge, we are the only organization that has implemented this strategy.
