Southern Stingray (Dasyatis Americana)


SouthernStingray

Description: Diamond shaped up to five feet across with a long thin tail.  Muddy brown with a  white belly.

Habitat: Shallow sandy areas in bays, estuaries and oceans

Range: From New Jersey to Brazil

Diet: Worms, fish, mollusks, and crustaceans

Best Event: 25m freestyle - about 43 seconds

Worst Event: Always DQs in breaststroke

Fun Facts:

  • Stingrays give birth to 3 - 9 live "pups" each spring.  They are about 9" long at birth.
  • Sharks like to eat stingrays.
  • Stingrays have no bones.  They are primarily made of cartilage.
  • Stingrays have several rows of flat teeth they use to crush mollusks.
