COACHES CORNER
Congratulations on a great finish to the dual meet season! Our tri-meet with the Northpark Riptide and the South Irvine Dolphins was a great success. I know some of you are puzzled as to why our 8 and unders were diving from the deck instead of the blocks and the answer is very simple. I have seen many times in my coaching career, top seeded swimmers at championships getting disqualified from their best race in Championships because they were used to diving from the blocks all season and when asked to dive from the deck (which all 8-unders will) they hit the water too shallow in their attempt to adjust, performed an illegal motion that earned them a disqualification and a loss of some 20 or so points for the team. Thank you for your patience and understanding in the matter, I know that some of our swimmers were only a fraction of a second from qualifying and that brings me to my next point...

Championship qualifying times are not easy to make in any sense. They actually are much more difficult to achieve in the 7-10 year old age groups. The Irvine Swim League has its bulk of participants in those age groups and in order to run a one day championship meet they have to make the times difficult enough to keep the amount of champs participants feasible. That is another issue altogether and the point is to congratulate all of our swimmers on an amazing season qualified or not. We have many swimmers on the team now that did not qualify for champs their first season and have now qualified for all 4 or 5 events in their current season.

The best way to assure qualifying swims is to participate in some kind of swimming during the 10 month off season from summer league. This will keep them ready for a great start to the following season and a more efficient approach to that goal.

The Championship meet will take place on Saturday August 9th. As a team, we can expect some very fierce competition from the other teams in our division; the Woodbridge Wave Riders and the Oak Creek Orcas most notably. We must prepare for the championship meet in the next two weeks with great diligence. Every start, every turn, every finish and most importantly... every stroke must be made in careful preparation. The 8 and unders will be swimming in a different course from the 9 and olders. This will mean that the coaches will be moving back and forth between pools throughout the meet and need the help of the parents to make sure the kids are at the ready bench at the appropriate times. Our parents have done an amazing job all season keeping our swimmers focused and prepared and the coaching staff greatly appreciates that! I would want all of our swimmers to be strongly aided to the point where their only and
main concern is having their best performance ever in every swim at Champs.

PRACTICES this week are the same as last week from 3-6pm at Portola Springs. WE WILL NOT BE HOLDING WORKOUT ON WEDNESDAY (7/30) DUE TO THE RELAY MEET AT WOOLLETT. We will need all of our coaches in
attendance. If you were unable to sign up for the Relay meet in time, please plan on taking the day off on Wednesday and Friday unless there is a social event this Friday. NEXT WEEK we will also hold practice on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday only due having all of four coaches at the Wild Rivers team social on
Wednesday and Friday we will take off to rest before the Championship meet. Stay tuned for social events on those days!

This week, I will be taking requests for swims from those who did not qualify since they get to choose one event to participate in. Thank you all for a great finish to the dual meet season! I am looking forward to a great approach to our championship meet in order to ensure our best finish yet!

See you on deck!

Eddie

COACHES CORNER
Great work at the time trial meet! It is crucial to test out our team before the first meet not only in terms of racing but also in terms of meet operation. Our swimmers and parents did a tremendous job in running our most efficient and enjoyable time trial meet ever! Thank you for helping to make that a reality!

Now that we have an idea of where we stand in terms of racing, it is very important that the swimmers come to practice ready to work hard in preparation for our first dual meet this Saturday with the Greentree Gators. Again, I am very excited to see how we do this Saturday and I know that our swimmers are ready to step up to the challenge. This week the swimmers can expect to work on relay exchanges and turns again in order to get ready along with some starts and more technique work.

Lastly, a quick but very important note... We had a few swimmers that forgot to check out in the red book for the meet on Friday. Sending me an email is not the same as signing out in the red book. If you know ahead of time that your child cannot make the meet this Saturday, please sign out by Wednesday to let me know. I will put together the lineup that evening and in order to avoid losing relays and kids missing a chance to swim, please make your best effort to help us make sure that this does not happen again.

Looking forward to another great week on deck!

Coach Eddie
