The original NASL lasted from 1968 to 1984. In that period of time, high level soccer was brought to North America by world class superstar players including Pele, Johan Cryuff, Franz Beckenbauer, George Best, Gordon Banks, Geoff Hurst, Eusiebo, Giorgio Chinaglia, Teofilo (Nene) Cubillas and Bobby Moore, among others.
In 2011, the NASL is back with nine (9) teams which are the Atlanta Silverbacks, Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, FC Tampa Bay, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Montreal Impact, NSC Minnesota Stars, Puerto Rico Islanders and San Antonio Scorpions

The United Soccer Leagues (USL) is the organizer of several soccer leagues in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. It includes men's and women's leagues, both professional and amateur. Leagues currently organized are USL Pro, the USL Premier Development League (PDL), the W-League and two leading youth leagues, the Super-20 League and Super Y-League. Beginning in the fall of 2011, it will add an indoor league.[1]
It is directly affiliated with the United States Soccer Federation, the United States Adult Soccer Association and the Canadian Soccer Association. There is no promotion and relegation in US soccer.
