Hot Springs Referee Success
Newsflash--Rebecca has once again been selected to officiate at the 2007 Southern Regionals, this year in Oklahoma City. Congratulations once again to Rebecca for all her hard work. We have several more young referees that are more than capable of making it to this level, so continue to work hard and ask Rebecca how you can improve when you see her on the fields.

Hot Springs referee Rebecca Maffit was one of 12 referees from the entire state invited to officiate at the US Youth Southern Region Championships, held in late June at Burns Park.

Rebecca was assigned as an assistant referee for 7 games over 4 days of the tournament, including the quarter finals. The refereeing was high pressure, as this tournament brought together the state champions from the 12 states in the region, who were playing for the right to advance to the national championship tournament.

Throughout the tournament, FIFA referee Sandra Hunt, who is the highest ranking female referee in the United States, was on hand to lend support and meet the referees working the tournament.

The photo below was taken at the awards banquet held on Monday, July 3rd. Rebecca learned a lot during this tournament, and is looking forward to sharing what she learned with our local referees this season.

Congratulations Rebecca--you've made Hot Springs proud!

Kristine Lilly Visits Hot Springs
Some HSSA players recently got to hear Kristine Lilly, the captain of the US Women's National Team and 19 year veteran of soccer at the highest playing level in the United States, speak at Crossgate Academy. Students at Crossgate won a national contest by losing over 100 pounds in a get fit campaign.

Kristine invited some of the Crossgate students in the audience to try different soccer skills and then listened as Kristine spoke about her passion for children, athletics and the need to stay fit. Kristine then showed off a few of her soccer skills by shooting balls from different spots in the gym, then finished off by signing autographs for everyone in attendance.

Kristine was presented a Hot Springs Soccer T Shirt and said she was going to wear it the following week at residency camp in Los Angeles.

In the photo below are U-16 players Marissa Hicks (a former player in the HSSA now playing for LRFC) along with current HSSA players Elizabeth Burke, Melissa Geddings, Marisa Lowder and Rebecca Maffit along with Kristine. It was a rare treat to see an international soccer superstar visiting Hot Springs!

Simple Soccer for Parents
This is the place for anyone that would like some help to learn more about soccer--presented in a very simple way. Great stuff!

Click here for an excellent website that explains soccer in simple terms.

Click here to go to a pretty comprehensive soccer glossary.   See how much you already know!

Click here for a nice little explanation of offside. It's a clear explanation of a rule that is probably the most misunderstood and frustrating in soccer!

New Munro Field Layout

The fields at Munro have been slightly reconfigured this summer. Fields have been numbered to eliminate confusion on what game is scheduled on each field.

The U-9/10 field has been moved to a stand alone area in the 2004 expansion area, on your left side as you enter the field area. This change allows more flexability in game and practice scheduling.   Two U-7/8 fields are now side by side across the U-11/12 field.

Players on the U-11/12 fields will now be on the North (road) side of the field, and parents will be on the South side, the opposite of previous seasons. Designations for players and parent sides on all of our U-9 and above fields are on the map below.

The full size field remains unchanged.

The HSSA is also working on a sponsorship program for our fields. The full size field has been sponsored by Reebaire and a U6 field has been sponsored by Simmons 1st Bank. Thanks to these community partners for stepping up and helping our soccer program. If you know of other local businesses that may want to help the HSSA, please let us know!

Fields are closed for the Summer, but the grass is growing and the fields are being sanded to improve their quality this coming season!

We do live in Arkansas, where the weather changes every 10 minutes or so.   Please check this site, contact the Hot Springs coach, or call the HSSA info line at 501-276-8257 in the event of rain or other bad weather

As a general rule of thumb, check with the Hot Springs coach if it rains 1 inch or more within 12 hours of the start of a scheduled game.

Directions to Soccer Fields in Hot Springs
Directions to the various soccer fields in Hot Springs. Please confirm which field you are playing at, as it is quite a time consuming drive between each location!

Munro Fields, Hot Springs

From Little Rock, take I-30 west (towards Texarkana). Continue on I-30 to Malvern. Exit at Highway 270 West. After 10 miles or so, you will pass through a traffic light, and soon after you will see Buddy Bean Lumber on your left side. Right after Buddy Bean, you will see the Hot Springs Soccer sign, also on the left, in front of the Lake Catherine Footwear Factory. Turn left into the parking lot, and you will see the soccer field entrance on the far left side of the parking lot as you face the building. If you come to a second traffic light, you have just passed the fields, so turn around.

Kimery Park, Hot Springs

From Little Rock, take I-30 west (towards Texarkana). It will be a far easier and quicker trip to the field by NOT getting off at the Hot Springs exit, and continuing on I-30 to Malvern. Exit at Highway 270 west (towards Hot Springs). Continue on 270 west until you come to the 1st traffic light (approximately 12 to 15 miles). Turn left at the light, which actually keeps you on Highway 270 west. Continue on 270 west to the McLeod Street exit. Turn right onto McLeod, and continue about 1/2 mile to the 1st street on your left (Leonard Street). Turn left, onto Leonard, and proceed again to the 1st left, which is Kimery Lane. Turn left and proceed up the steep hill. The soccer field is on your right as you enter the park. There are restrooms available.

Linden Park, Hot Springs

From Little Rock, take I-30 west (towards Texarkana). Take exit 111 (highway 70) towards Hot Springs. Proceed along Highway 70 for approximately 18 miles. As you enter into town, the name of the road changes to Grand Avenue. Note--be careful on Grand as the speed limit slows considerably. Proceed along Grand through several traffic lights until you come to Central Avenue. Turn right and proceed along Central Avenue, past the bathhouses and the Arlington Hotel. Stay in the left lane, approximately ½ mile past the Arlington, you will turn left at Whittington avenue. There is a nice fountain that you can use as a landmark. Proceed along Whittington, and it will become divided. Just past the tourist businesses you will see on your right, you will see a sign for Linden Park. Turn right, proceed up the hill and you have arrived. Restrooms and a shaded pavilion are available.
