Wedding Bells Again!
It's deja vu all over again. Early this fall Ed asked the lovely Allison to join him in Hoser matrimony. The kids will tie the knot next fall, in October 2003. This will mark the third Hoser wedding in three years. All current and prospective Hosers that are single should take heed!
Wedding Bells for EJ & Renee
Best wishes and congratulations go out to "Showtime" Eric Barger and Renee Brozic who tied the knot Saturday, July 6th, 2002. Our heartfelt congratulations (and perhaps our deepest sympathies to Renee) go out to the happy couple. As any true Hoser would say, "beauty"!
Spring 2002 Season Over
The Spring 2002 season concluded on a bit of a sour note, however the Hosers managed to take second place in the league and second place in the season ending tournament, the best ever finish for the Hosers in the tournament (click here for the completed bracket). The Hosers had to play a man short all day Saturday, and it finally took it's toll by the third game, as the Hosers had to play the tough crew of Henderson Hall. The Hosers played tough all day and have nothing to be ashamed about, as our three outfielders, Krash, EJ and Patty did a great job all day running down balls and making several outstanding catches each. Now it's time to relax for a little while and get ready to defend our fall 2001 championship, as the fall season starts August 22nd. Get out!

Hosers to Try Another Tourney
Thursday, November 15 - The Hosers are going to try their hand at another tournament, and this time at least, how they finish is secondary. The Hosers have signed up for a one-pitch tournament on Saturday, November 17th, in Fairfax. All proceeds of the tourney will directed to benefiting the Washington area families affected by the tragic events of September 11. Definately a cause the Hosers can get behind!
Although the Hosers post-season experience in tourneys has been less than stellar, the Hosers will give it their best come this Saturday. Click here to check out the tournament bracket, and click here for a little background on the tourney. Eric "Showtime" Barger (kudos EJ for spotting this tourney and getting us involved!) tells us to:
"...Expect a neat day of events in addition to the softball...There will be a ceremony involving the Marine Corps Color Guard, helicopters, and a 21 gun salute. There will also be hot food at the fields."
Sound like a great day, and we won't be freezing our behinds off. The weather forcast is for sunny skies with temps in the 60's! Not bad for late November. Go Hosers!

Hosers Win Fourth Straight Championship!
Monday, November 5 - Playing later into fall than ever before, the Hosers swept the Lost Boys to win their fourth Championship in a row, going back to the Spring 2000 season. The Hosers didn't make it easy on themselves, making more than enough misplays to keep things interesting, but the Hoser lumber managed to score at least one run in every inning of the night except for one to manage enough offense to win. The Hosers climbed on Bobby "I just mis-hit that ball a smidge" Dellinger's creaking back in game one, as Bobby went three for four with a triple and six rbis. The Hosers trailed 3 - 1 in the bottom of the third, but Bobby's first two ribeye's of the night tied the game and a single up the middle from Terry "Was that pitch deep?" Eby plated two more runs to give the Hosers the lead for good, as the offense finally came to life and the defense stayed solid for a 15 - 5 win.
The win in the first game set up a must win for the Hosers in the night cap if they wanted to repeat as champs. The Lost boys came out swinging though, and held a 9 - 8 lead after three innings, when the Hosers scored six times in the top of the fifth to take lead they held on to. The inning was highlighted by John "Crazy John" Kastellec's three run inside the park homerun, which was followed by Tom "Really, I've played in 20 years" Lubnow's inside the park dinger that put the Hosers up 14 - 9. The Hosers tacked on two in fifth on Eric "Showtime" Bargers second two run homer of the game and got three more in the sixth to take a 19 - 9 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. The Hosers needed the extra runs for comfort, as the Lost Boys didn't want to just lay down and go home, but they could only get four runs and the Hosers won 19 - 13 and took locked up their fourth championship in a row.

Hoser Split Puts Title Hopes in Doubt
Monday, October 29 - The Hosers rode two huge innings to a big win in game one of their doubleheader against the Filthy Capitalists, 26 - 13. The Hosers scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning, then answered a big nine run rally by the Filthy Capitalists in the third inning with a 12 run outburst in the top of the fourth inning to salt the game away. The Hosers got ten straight hits to open the inning, as every Hoser scored in the inning. Every Hoser had at least one rbi for the game, the big gun being Brian "Packer Backer" Griepentrog, who went 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and six rbis.
Game two looked pretty good for the Hosers as well, as they had a 9 - 6 lead after three innings, but the Filthy Capitalists took advantage of some shoddy Hoser defense to score 14 runs in the final three innings to take the game, 20 - 13. At the same time, the Hosers bats went cold, allowing the F.C.'s to take a 9 - 16 lead after five innings. After four more runs in the top of the sixth, the Hosers tried to mount a big time rally, but were only able to score four runs. The split put the Hosers championship hopes in jeopardy, and definitely have to win the next two games to have a shot at their fourth straight championship.

Hosers Stage Huge Comeback, Sweep Doubleheader
Friday, October 26 - The Hosers staged one of their greatest comebacks of all time (at least in the top five), and overcame an eleven run first inning by the Big Subpoenas to win the first game 15 - 14. With Hosers only able to field eight players to start the game, the Big Subpoenas were able to take advantage of the huge holes in the Hosers defense and scored 11 runs before the Hosers even had the chance to get to the plate. Steve 'Krash' Kreyer made it to the field by the end of the inning though, and nine fielders made it a much easier game for the Hosers, as they were able to shut out the Big Subpoenas for the next three innings, allowing the Hoser offense to creep back into the game. The Hosers closed to within a run by the end of the fourth inning, 10 - 11. The Big Subpoenas scored three in the top of the fifth and last inning to take a four run lead, 10 - 14, leading to the Hosers last at-bats. The Hosers were inspired, as Nate 'Big Dog' Sloan had just arrived to give the Hosers a full complement of players. Three straight singles opened the bottom of the fifth, leading to a Hoser run, and a sac fly gave the Hosers another with the Hosers down by two, one runner on and one out. Eric 'Showtime' Barger lived up to his nickname a smashed a triple to put the tying run on third with only one out. In a surprising move, the Big Subpoenas walked the next two batters intentionally to load the bases to try for a double play to end the game. This put the winning run on third though, a risky gamble. John 'Long John' Michaely was up next, and mindful of not hitting a homerun for an out (the Hosers had already used up their three dingers), hit a hard smash to the shortstop who tried to get the force at the plate and keep the lead. It didn't work as Barger beat the throw to the plate and tied the game. Matt 'Cooter' McMahan had the opportunity to be the big hero and drive in the winning run, but hit the ball so hard on a line that it sailed out of the yard for a tater and the second out. That left it up to Tom 'I haven't played in ten years' Lubnow to come up with a hit for a Hoser victory. Tom came through and found some grass and the Hosers had completed one of the greatest come-backs in Hosers history.
Mindful of giving the Big Subpoenas another big first inning, the Hosers looked to strike first in the second game, but went down 1 - 2 - 3 in the top of the first, and gave up five runs in the bottom of the first to dig themselves in another hole, down 0 - 5 after the first inning. The Hosers rallied big time though in the second inning, scoring 11 runs, getting two two run homers, one from Terry 'The EB' Eby and another from John 'Long John' Michaely. The Hosers scored seven more in the third inning and it was all over as the Hosers cruised to a much easier 19 - 12 win of the nightcap. 'The EB' and 'Krash' went a combined 14 for 14 on the night, neither Hoser making an out all night.

Hosers Split, Suffer First Fall Lose Since 1999
Monday, October 22 - After several more weeks of not playing due to light problems at Shirley Park, the Hosers played their first games since the beginning of the month. The long layoff showed as the Hosers played shoddy defense, especially in a seven run fifth inning for CCSP/Sarver in the top of the fifth of the second game of the night. The Hosers had managed to hold on to to the opening game 16 - 14, but were down by 10 runs in the bottom of the fifth and final inning in the nightcap, 10 - 20. The Hosers battled though, and scored four runs and had the bases loaded and brought the tying run on deck, but CCSP/Sarver was able to hold the Hosers at bay and won 14 - 20. It was the Hosers first loss in the fall since October of 1999.

Another win, another tie!
Tuesday, October 2 - After several weeks of rainouts, the Hosers were itching to play again. They started off well with a relatively easy 13 - 8 win in the opening game of the double header. The second game was much tougher, as the Dukes were able to get their 'A' team to the ball park. After four innings, the Hosers trailed 3 - 4 and had done very little on offense. The Hosers broke out on top in the fifth, scoring 5 runs to lead 8 - 4. However, it seemed that as soon as the Hosers discovered their offense, they lost their defense, and several errors led to seven Duke runs as they retook the lead 8 - 11 after five. In the sixth, the Hosers retook the lead with four runs, the tying and go ahead runs on a two run bomb by John "Look at my new stance" Michaely. With very little time remaining, the Hosers figured all they had to do was shut down the Dukes and the game would be over. Two pitches got two outs, then Brian "Man, I just missed that ball!" Edwards made an almost outstanding catch. As he dove for a sinking line drive, he caught the ball but as he hit the ground, the ball popped out. With the tying run on second with two outs, the Dukes batter hit a hard shot to Brian "Sure I had my foot on the base" Griepentrog at first, he bobbled but got a good throw to Terry "El Gato" Eby covering first, but was just barely late. The runner from second tried to score on the play though, and El Gato threw him out at the plate to apparently end the game, the Hosers victorious. Unfortunately, there were still 30 seconds left on the clock and the next inning was started, giving the Dukes another chance. The Hosers put together a big time rally and scored seven runs to seemingly put the game out of reach. But again, big Hoser offense led to poor, poor Hoser defense, as the Hosers gave up at least four extra outs and gave the Dukes eight runs to tie the game, 19 - 19. A poor defensive performance, but a strong offensive one. The Hosers will need to tighten the defense a bit if they plan to defend their 2000 Fall championship.

Hosers End Season As Champs!
The Hosers tough luck in the post season tournament continued this year, as the Hosers took the first game of the tourney, 15 - 5 over Team Me, but then couldn't buy a hit in the second game, and didn't score until the sixth inning against a tough Mackey's team and lost 9 - 3. Now in the losers bracket, the Hosers had to play at 9:00am, not a favorite Hoser time. The Hosers managed to beat the Dawgs though, 11 - 1 and advanced to a showdown game against the U.S. Exporters. Since we had tied the regular season, this game would decide the regular season league championship. The Hosers rose to the occasion and defeated the Exporters 15 - 10 in seven full innings, taking their third league championship in a row. We still had a tournament to play though, and unfortunately, it was against Mackey's, a team we have had trouble scoring runs against. True to form, we couldn't score any runs and lost 11 - 5, taking third in the post-season tourney.
Like an old vinyl record, Hosers find groove
Tuesday, June 26 - After an anemic offensive effort the week before (the Hosers only scored 7 runs in two games), the Hosers got back in the swing of things Tuesday night as they scored 40 runs and swept CCSP to remain in a tie for first place. Game one saw the re-emergence of top of the Hosers' line-up, as Shawn "Get one hit, go back to being cocky" Bergman, Brian "Evil Knevil" Edwards, Eric "Ed says power outage" Barger, Ed "I'm the #4 hitter and I don't hit singles" Metz, and Terry "The Mighty E-Train" Eby went a combined 17 for 20, scoring 15 runs, with 14 RBI. The Hosers jumped out to an eight run lead after two innings but, CCSP responded in the bottom of the third with a long inning and lead 11 - 9 going into the fourth. The Hosers came right back with nine runs in the next two innings, including a 6-run, two-out rally in the top of the fifth, started by Henry "Hit 'em where they ain't" Dunbar. The Hosers held on for the 20 - 13 victory.
In game two, CCSP scored four runs in the top of the first, but the Hosers responded with eight of their own, sending twelve batters to the plate, nine before a single out was recorded. But CCSP kept themselves in the game and were leading 12 - 10 going into the bottom of the fourth. From there the Hosers offense responded and added five runs to take a slim three run lead. The five run fourth was capped off by John "No fence is too tall or too far" Michaely's three run blast that put the Hosers up for good. Ed "Southern draw" Taylor and Matt "Coot Daddy" McHahon each went 2 for 3 and scored 2 runs in the Hosers 20-15 victory.
In other notable news, Nate "The big dog" Sloan showed up for his first game of the season and had a hit in his first at-bat of the year and ended up 4 for 7 on the night. Brian "Eagle" Edwards and Eric "Take it easy on the nicknames" Barger each had an inside-the-park home run, while Ed "Stats rat" Metz went a perfect 8 for 8 on the night and also had an inside-the-park home run. The Hosers are now tied for the regular season championship with US Exporters with the championship to be determined in the end of the season tournament.

Hosers' Offense Sputters, Kicks, Stalls
Tuesday, June 19 - The Hosers went head-to-head with the U.S. Exporters in a battle for solo possession of first place. Game one lived up to expectations, as the teams battled down the wire and scored a combined total of eight runs? Yes, both high-powered offensive machines were held in check with great pitching and solid defense. The U.S. Exporters scored their first run in the top of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. But in the bottom of the fifth, both Dave "Heavy Thunder" Thornton, tagging from third, and Shawn "I throw my hats so much it is a good thing I still have my hair" Bergman, tagging from second, scored on Eric "I sure miss Barcroft" Barger's sacrifice fly and to give the Hosers' a 2-1 lead. The Exporters came right back and tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the sixth inning but the Hosers' answered with their largest offensive charge of the evening. "Loooooong" John Machaely dropped an absolute bomb scoring Terry "E-Train" Eby who had singled to lead off the inning. Bobby "The Quip" Dellinger later scored on Dave "Boots" Thornton's sacrifice fly giving the Hosers' a three run cushion heading into the seventh, where they held on for the 5-3 victory.
Game two was all Exporters, all the time. They built an eight run lead after the first inning and never looked back, smoking the Hosers' 15-2 and putting the two teams in a dead tie for first place heading into the final week of the season. The Hosers' offense never got into gear as the Exporters held the Hosers to only seven hits and two runs. Ed "I wish I had my old shoes back" Metz and Eric "Can they move those fences in?" Barger scored the only two runs on singles by Terry "The raging bull" Eby and Bobby "Hop-a-long" Dellinger. Both teams now need help to win the regular season championship out right as this was their only head-to-head meeting this season. This race for the regular season championship is one of the tightest and most exciting in Arlington's storied history.

Hosers test heart, pass with flying colors
Tuesday, June 12-The Hosers continued to stay as hot as the recent weather sweeping Stuart Grey in route to winning their eighth straight contest and staying in the thick of the race for the league championship. In game one the Hosers played well, getting timely hitting and great defense. Home runs by Eric "Deep-sea fishing" Barger, Brian "I can now tell my grandchildren I hit one off the score board" Griepentrog, and Terry "Will argue balls and strikes" Eby propelled the Hosers offense which scored twelve runs. Defensively, Eric "Show time" Barger held the Stuart Grey hitters in check with a stellar game in left-center, including a diving catch which saved extra bases and squashed a would-be offense rally. Defensive gems were also found in the infield as Ed "Where's my shoes?" Metz and Bobby "I'm older than Dick Clark" Dellinger turn yet another double play and helped the Hosers hold Stuart Grey to only six runs.
In game two, the Hosers had their hands full as the home team, Stuart Grey, held on to an 10-9 lead after four innings of play. But the savvy veterans in the middle and bottom of the order, Terry "E-Train" Eby, "Long" John Michaely, Steven "Krash" Kreyer, Bobby "The Quip" Dellinger, and Henry "The Rock" Dunbar, kept the Hosers in the ball game and helped build a slim two run lead going into the last inning. From there the whole line-up exploded as the Hosers scored eleven runs in the top half of the inning. A double by Bobby "I've never had a cheap hit before Tuesday night" Dellinger and jacks from Eric "Stay in the batter's box" Barger and Shawn "I do the write ups so you better believe I am going to mention this" Bergman were topped by Ed "Tell the world about my sore groin" Metz's inside-the-park 3-run homer as the Hosers sent fourteen batters to the plate. Henry "The Artist" Dunbar continued his hitting assault going five for six on the night with 4 RBI as the Hosers cruised to a 23-14 victory.

Hosers Stay True to Form, Sweep Two
Tuesday, June 5 - Hosers' pitcher/manager Terry "E-Train" Eby should have a healthy heart. Besides dealing with the sparkling personalities that comprise the Hosers' roster, he has to withstand a stress test during at least one game of the teams' double headers. Such was the case this past Tuesday as the Hoser's faced Faccia Luna. The Hosers' flexed their muscle early jumping out to a 4-0 lead with solo shots in the first inning by Brian "I don't know my own strength" Griepentrog, the E-Train, and John "Iron Sides" Michaely. But trailing 10-2 Faccia Luna mounted a rally, scoring six in the top of the fifth and placed themselves in position for the come from behind victory. However, the Hosers' lineup responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth and went on to the 14-8 victory.
In game two, the Hosers' did their part to reduce E-Train's blood pressure by displaying their might and scoring ten runs in the first inning. The ten run inning was highlighted by home runs from Eric "Only one of my six home runs counted" Barger, "Loooooong" John Michaely, and Brian "Bobby said my homer went further than yours" Griepentrog. From there, the Hosers' were able to hold Faccia Luna to three run's and cruised to the 14-3 victory. "Big Bear" Griepentrog and Bobby "The Quip" Dellinger were perfect at the plate; reaching base safely each time they strolled to the plate. Brian "I can run really fast" Edwards continued his hitting tear, while Hoser rookie Matt "Cooter" McMahon ripped the ball at every at bat. With the two victories and U.S. Exporters first loss of the season, the Hosers' pulled into a tie for first place.

Short Handed Hosers Flash Leather, Swing Sticks
Tuesday, May 29 - In game one the Hosers hit the field with only nine players against Team Me and started off the game in control. A first inning, three run blast by Eric "Show Time" Barger jump started the offence. The Hosers' applied the tried and true philosophy of "win every inning", out scoring their opponents every inning and adding runs at a constant pace to build a 14-8 lead going into the bottom of the seventh. Team Me exploited the nine man defensive front, scoring four in the seventh, but their come back bid fell short as Terry "The E-Train" Eby snagged a liner up the middle, starting the 1-6-3 double play, and Steve "Krash" Kreyer made a NFL, basket-style catch to end the game.
In game two the Hosers solved the defensive puzzle and flashed some brilliant leather. Shawn "Socks" Bergman made two catches worthy of a Sportscenter highlight and turned two double plays from his position in right field. Solid defensive play at first and short by Brian "Big Bear" Griepentrog and Ed "I haven't seen a pitch yet I haven't like" Metz help hold Team Me to only one run. The offence was supplied by Eric "I swing for the fences" Barger and "Long" John Michaely who both homered. Henry "The Rock" Dunbar and Brian "Eagle" Edwards both had solid performances at the plate helping the Hosers cruise to a 17-1 victory. The wins put the Hosers at 8-1-1, a game out of first.

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!
Friday, October 27 - The Hosers have just been informed that they are the 2000 Fall Men's "C-1 Monday" League Champions with a perfect 18 - 0 record. C. C. Sports Pub informed the league that they are unable to field a team for the season's last games, so the Hosers waltz for two more wins, these by forfeit. A somewhat anti-climatic way to end the season, but it was a great season non-the-less.
