FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ's)
When does the season begin?
This is a complicated question. The easy answer is that Hoosier Hoops attempts to begin at the end of the school season. If your son is currently in 4th, 5th, or 6th grade, the tryouts will be held following the end of the Indy Hoops League and the USSFA State School Series Tournament. This past year, that would have been in the middle of March. If your son is currently in the 7th or 8th grade, his season will follow the end of the traditional school basketball. Looking at some of the middle school schedules this season, tryouts will be held in February some time. If your son is a high school player, the season will begin following the end of the high school season.

How long does the season run?
The typical AAU season runs until mid-to-late July. Teams with Hoosier Hoops will play in tournaments from possibly March to July. It seems like a long season, but some teams will take the month of June off of tournaments so that players may go to school camps and go on vacation.

How many tournaments will my son’s team play in over the summer?
The goal of each team is to play in a eight to ten tournaments over the summer.

What is the cost for the summer season?
We are currently in the process of becoming a not-for-profit organization which would allow us to seek sponsorships. Depending on how much money we are able to raise, costs will fluctuate. FOr the coming 2008 season, the fee for playing with Hoosier Hoops will be $400. However, please do not allow cost to be a reason for not playing.

How many players will you keep in each age group?
The number of players taken for each team will be decided at tryouts. There is no set number of players for a roster; however 8 to 10 is a likely possibility.

What is the time commitment?
As a general rule, Hoosier Hoops basketball teams will practice twice a week for most of the summer. This allows players to gain a fundamental understanding of the game in order to become better basketball players for school basketball. Along with the practices, the teams will play in tournaments which generally are over weekends with a few exceptions during the month of July.

What is the travel commitment?
As grades grow so does the travel. The elementary school boys will mostly play in tournaments close to central Indiana. Once in middle school travel will extend to one or two tournaments that may include travel to places such as Fort Wayne (IN) or Louisville (KY). As players enter the grade levels where collegiate recruiting begins, teams may attend an exposure tournament or two outside of Indiana.

Is practice mandatory?
Practice is NOT mandatory; however, it is strongly encouraged. Playing time is not guaranteed to any player in the program and should not be seen as an expectation. If a player never attends practice, he will not know the system and plays his coach runs. This can greatly hurt playing time. Also, if a player is not attending practice, the coach does not have the opportunity to see what the player has to offer while playing. Finally, without attending practice, the player will miss valuable fundamentals taught in practice that will allow him to grow as a player.

When do the teams practice?
Practice generally is twice a week. Practice times will be set by the coach and Director of Basketball Operations based on court availability. In the past teams have practiced two week nights a week so that there is never a cancelled practice as a result of a weekend tournament.
