Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2015 in Memorial Day Run N Slam
By Jeff Stone
Ft. Wayne, IN -- The 6th grade Spiece Hoosier Hoops team competed in the Memorial Day Run N Slam over Memorial Day weekend. The team went 1-1 in pool play to make it into the Gold Bracket of the tournament. In game one of pool play, 2015 used scrappy defense and an up-tempo style to beat the Ohio Magic 35-25 in a game that went as fast as it was played. There were very few whistles in the game and play was extremely sloppy by both teams, but 2015 was able to get the win. Trevor Waite of Tri West had 13 points and 5 steals and Jake Hendershot, also of Tri West, led the team with 8 rebounds. Anthony Jones of Speedway provided excellent defense and rebounding. In game two, 2015 lost a heartbreaker to the Minneapolis Hustlers, 45-44. The game was close throughout as the lead changed hands frequently during the game. 2015 was plagued by turnovers and shooting problems during a game that went down to the wire. With 5.8 seconds remaining, 2015 had a chance to win it, but couldn’t get a shot off at the buzzer. Jake Marsh of Plainfield led with 15 points, while Anthony Jones was the top rebounder with 7.
In game one of the tournament on Sunday, 2015 faced the Indiana Thunder, a team they lost to in thier previous tournament by one point. Guerin Wagner of Zionsville, Jake Hendershot, Jake Marsh and Anthony Jones provided tough defense in the paint that frustrated the Thunder’s big man and leading scorer throughout the game. Although the team played well overall, they were again plagued by untimely turnovers and missed opportunities, missed layups and missed free throws. This was another close game as the score was tied at halftime and the lead changed hands several times throughout the second half. 2015 took the lead late in the game, but couldn’t hold onto it and was forced to foul down the stretch. Down by 3 with only a few seconds left, 2015 had one last shot to tie the game, but a desperation 3 at the buzzer by Jake Marsh fell just short, and the team lost 42-39. Leading scorers were Jake Marsh with 11 and Anthony Jones and Trevor Waite with 10 each. Jake Marsh was the leading rebounder with 4.
The team’s last four losses have been by a combined 7 points. Coach Stone said, “This team is right there and on the verge of a breakout tournament. We have shown that we can play with the top teams and we just have to put it all together. We need everyone to show up at the same time.” 2015 hopes to get over the hump in the Players Club NIT at the Fieldhouse in Fishers this coming weekend.

Hoosier Hoops 2014 Red Wins MYT Super Regional
By Kayle Funkhouser/Jeff Stone
Perry Meridian, IN -- 2014 Red won the 7th grade division of the MYT Super Regional at Perry Meridian over the weekend. The team defeated the Indy Eagles 51-36 in the Championship. Their games were full of events including technical fouls, rough play, players getting punched, poor officiating, trash talk and poor sportsmanship. Defense, rebounding, and free throws were the keys to winning the championship game. 2014 Red actually held onto their leads by jumping out early, hitting 3’s and getting double digit leads in each game. Kyle Loechel and Mitchell Collier rebounded extremely well, and the team got balanced scoring with Ryan Ruff, Jake Johnson, Conner Funkhouser, and Kyle Loechel providing the core points. James Mayberry got key steals when we needed. Conner Funkhouser hit 5 3’s in a row even after he was the guy who was punched by an opposing player. Kyle Funkhouser had 8 rebounds in a row on the defensive end, which was pivotal in holding their opponent to one shot on eight straight possessions after they cut 2014 Red’s lead to 7 points. Jake Johnson handled pressure from the opposing guard and hit free-throws after being fouled on drives to the basket. The bench was pivotal with Keith Kassen, Shawn Weir, and Matthew Baylor coming in and providing scoring and good defense in good minutes for the team.

Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2015 Competes at USSSA State Championship
By Jeff Stone
Ft. Wayne, IN – Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2015 competed in the 6th grade division of the USSSA State Championship in Ft. Wayne this past weekend. The team started the weekend off against the Indiana Thunder. They played well early leading throughout, but miscues and turnovers cost them the game, 34-33. Luke Callahan had a good look at the buzzer from the 3 point line, but came up short. Luke had 11 points and Trevor Waite scored 8. Brady Schall was the leading rebounder with 4. In the second game, Elite 2015 took it to the Cereal City Hoopsters winning 44-31. They used swarming defense and capitalized on turnovers to pull away in the second half. Trevor Waite had 6 steals and 13 points, and Jake Marsh had a solid offensive game chipping in 9 points. Jake Hendershot lead the team with 8 rebounds, followed by Jake Marsh with 7. In their first tournament game on Sunday, the team battled poor officiating and a very poor start just to be in the game. Poor execution and poor effort led to a 16-8 halftime deficit. The team battled back ourscoring the Spiece Boilermakers 23-17 in the second half. However, it wasn’t enough as Anthony Jones had a shot from point blank range at the buzzer to tie the game only to have it roll around the rim and out. Jake Marsh played very well off the bench and led the team in scoring with 11 and rebounding with 8, and was difficult to defend in the post. Trevor Waite provided excellent play on both ends of the floor and handled the ball extremely well in the face of some of the toughest defensive pressure the team has seen. Zach Hoereth provided great minutes off the bench as well. It was a disappointing weekend as a whole, but the team hopes to rebound at the Memorial Day Run n’ Slam over Memorial Day weekend.

Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2012 Paricipates in Adidas May Classic
By Albert Hendrix/Jeff Stone
Bloomington, IN -- Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2012 played in the 15 and under division in the Adidas May Classic with some of the top teams in the nation this past weekend. They won their pool by beating Club Indy Storm and West Virginia Wildcats to advance to the Gold Bracket tournament. Team Pride went on to beat the Speice Indy Heat who won the Bill Hensley Memorial Run n’ Slam the previous weekend. They also went on to beat Speice Indy Stars, the team that finished second at the Bill Hensley Run n’ Slam. Coach Hendrix was very proud of the boys and of the effort they have given this year. Coach Hendrix believes the team is on the verge of being a very good team, and with a break or two could have won any of the tournaments they have played in against some of the best teams in the country. It has been a very enjoyable year for Coach Hendrix. Winning is important, but having great kids is most important and what is really all about. 2012’s next tournament is in Fort Wayne at the Memorial Day Run n’ Slam the weekend of May 22nd, 23rd, 24th.

By Darron Dancler/Jeff Stone
Ft. Wayne, IN -- Spiece Hoosier Hoops 2010 lost all 3 of their games over the weekend at USSSA State by a combined 18 points. Games 1 and 3 were almost identical; very close throughout, except for a late first half run by the opponent. 2010 battled back in each game, but could never quite get over the hump. Game 2 went down to the buzzer, where 2010 missed 6 layups in the first half alone, and had a chance to win with 2 seconds left, only to come up short. The team needs to improve defensively, play with more aggression and reduce the number of silly turnovers they commit. They will see their next action at the Memorial Day Run n’ Slam in Ft. Wayne over Memorial Day weekend.

By Cindy Wills/Jeff Stone
Bloomington, IN -- Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite opened play in the Adidas May Classic May 8-10 by losing to a Dan Dakich coached Indiana Elite team 63-53 in a very well played game. Except for a few possessions where the Elite jumped passing lanes late in the game, the game was very close throughout. Jordan Rhodes of Avon scored a season high 13 points while shooting more than 50% from the field and added excellent ball handling and 5 rebounds. In their next contest, the team lost to Ohio Basketball Club, 68-52, in a game featuring an opponent with very athletic rebounders, which demonstrated the need to continue to improve on blocking out. Jon Aldridge of Plainfield scored 14 points while shooting over 50% from the field. On Saturday night, the Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite team began tourney play with a loss to Spiece Team Tempo 70-54. Scott Amor of Danville

Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2012 Competes in Lebron James Classic
By Albert Hendrix/Jeff Stone
Akron, OH -- Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2012 competed in the Lebron James Classic in Akron, Ohio two weeks ago, finishing in the top 16 at the tournament. 2012 was clearly outmatched in the tournament, but they were able to win all three pool games, including a game against a very strong team from Baltimore, Maryland sponsered by Carmello Anthony of the Denver Nuggets. Making it to the final 16, 2012 lost by one point, 56-55, to a team from Pittsburgh who had played very well at the Pittsburgh Jam Fest, a prestigous tournament that includes top teams from the nation. 2012 is competing with some of the best AAU teams in the country with only 7 players currently. They will be joined by two others at the end of the school year. Coach Hendrix continues to be very proud of the accomplishments of his team. Although 2012 isn't the most talented team, the key to their success is in being extremely fundamentally sound and doing things the right way, such as working hard, being disciplined, and just being great kids. According to Coach Hendrix, this group is very coachable. The team is very excited to participate in their next tournament in Bloomington on May 15th and 16th at the Adidas May Classic, where they will again be competing against some of the best teams around.

Hoosier Hoops 2015 Teams See First Tournament Action at MYT National Club Challenge
By Jeff Stone
Southport, IN -- Hoosier Hoops 2015 Red had a tough start to the summer season losing both pool games and their first game of the tournament on Sunday. The team was overmatched in their pool games, but they never quit and continued to fight hard throughout. After practicing for only two weeks, the team had difficulty getting into their offensive and defensive sets and struggled at times with cohesiveness. In their first tournament game on Sunday, 2015 Red lost a heartbreaker to Hoop Dreams by 2 points in overtime. The team was led by big man Logan White, who was voted most valuable by Coach John Lautenschlager. Logan is the first winner of the Hoosier Hoops Hustle Award for 2015 Red. The players learned a lot about themselves and will see their next tournament action at the MYT Bring Your Game event in May.
Spiece Hoosier Hoops Elite 2015 went 1-2 on the weekend, losing their first pool game by 37 points to eventual champion The Ville. The Ville pressed throughout and jumped out to a big lead early and the outcome was never in doubt. Elite 2015 rebounded to defeat Hoop Dreams in their second pool game on Saturday by 26 points. In that game, Elite 2015 used a full court press to jump out to an early lead and never looked back. Going into Sunday’s tournament action with confidence, Elite 2015 again used a full court press to jump out to an early lead against a very good Indy Storm squad. The Storm settled down and had cut the lead to 2 at the half. Elite 2015 went cold in the second half, missing from inside and out, as well as at the free throw line. The Storm made shots and free throws down the stretch and Elite 2015 lost by 11. The boys learned a great deal about themselves and about what it takes to play at this level. Having been intimidated and tentative in the first game, they turned up the intensity in their next two games leaving the coaches with a feeling of great promise for the rest of the summer. They will see their next action at the USSSA State Finals at Ft. Wayne in May.
