AA Rules
The following rules apply to all AA games for the 2009 season:
- A team's at bat will end on the 3rd out or the 5th run scored during the half inning, whichever comes first.
- The number of players on defense will be a game time decision between the coaches of both teams. Both teams are expected to field the same number of players on defense.
- There will be a 1 1/2 hour time limit for games.
- Batters will be allowed to take as many bases as they can on a batted ball.
- Players will be allowed to take two bases from first base on a batted ball.
- There is no stealing allowed.
- All games will be coach pitch until after Memorial Day. After Memorial Day, all games will be kid pitch, but, as noted below, it is advisable to start games with an inning of “coach pitch” to ensure that every player gets at least one quality at-bat per game. Note that player pitchers should not throw to more than 2 or 3 batters per game. If a pitcher is having trouble reaching the plate, do not move him/her closer to the plate as this will create a safety concern when the batter hits the ball.
About Holden Baseball's Farm Leagues
The A and AA leagues are designed to transition young players from T-ball to Little League baseball. A League players (First Grade) and AA League players (2nd Grade) continue to learn the fundamental skills of baseball.
A League players play coach-pitch games throughout the year. Coaches should be sure to pitch from the players’ level, and at a speed that enables a relatively level pitch. For live pitching during games, it is still recommended to switch from coach pitching to the T after 4-6 pitches to keep the game moving and to maintain the hitter’s confidence. Using the T during some practice sessions will reinforce the value of the T, and keep it from becoming synonymous with defeat.
Player pitching is not taught at the A League level.
Player pitching is introduced at the AA level, but not before Memorial Day (midpoint of the season). In the first half of the season, coaches should begin teaching the pitching skills outlined in the Coaching Curriculum during practices, but should only use coach pitching during games. In the second half of the season, players may begin to pitch during games, but it is advisable to start these games with an inning of “coach pitch” to ensure that every player gets at least one quality at-bat per game. Note that player pitchers should not throw to more than 2 or 3 batters per game. If a pitcher is having trouble reaching the plate, do not move him/her closer to the plate as this will create a safety concern when the batter hits the ball.
