Providence Hoggs Players & Coaches,

As a former coach of last years Hoggs 15's and 7's team, I would like to take the time to give some words of wisdom as you all enter the new season.

To the players: "Take care of the little things and the big things will take care of themselves." I'm sure many of you have heard this quote mentioned before, but its one that speaks louder than any other quote out there.

As a rugby player (Providence Hoggs Rugby Player) you need to focus on the "little things", the aspects of your game that you directly control. You as an individual player have control over how you execute your offense and defense. You also have control over your hustle, your speed, your drive and most importantly your effort. You have control as you are positioning your body against your opponent in a tackle or when needing to off-load the ball. You have control over your attitude, your spirit, your passion, and your good sportsmanship that we as Providence Hoggs Rugby PLayers have prided ourselves on since 2002 when the Hoggs Journey began. I would like all of you to really take a moment before your games tomorrow and just think about the "little things" I have just mentioned.

Now also realize, the "bigger things" are not in your direct control. Don't concern yourself with the referees, or the way the other team is performing. You can't control the crowd, the coaches, the score, or your teammates. Don't focus on these aspects because they are truly out of your control. If you focus on the "bigger things", such as the score, the calls, or the opponent, then your individual effort will suffer. The "bigger things" will take care of themselves.

So guys when you execute the "little things" to perfection, that is when the score and the wins will take care of themselves! The wins will happen and they will happen because each of you have done your part. Your collective efforts will come together and a WIN is what you will achieve.

Coaches: I wish all of you the very best going into the season and as you work with these athletes, realize that what you are doing is more than just coaching them in the game of rugby. As a rugby coach at the University of Maryland Baltimore County this year, I finally realized that. An athlete came up to me at the end of the season and said, "With what I learned from you in terms of commitment and determination this season, has led to me realizing my dream of getting into Med School and I just want you to know that over the season I was 100 percent committed and determined to get into Med School, and yesterday I just found out I was accepted. Thanks Coach." We as coaches are assisting, guiding, influencing, and leaving an impact on these athletes lives. The skills in which we teach such as courage, determination, commitment, teamwork, trust, perseverance, and most importantly attitude. All of those skills we bring into the rugby team and our coaching among these players, can all be carried over into real life situations. Remember that as you work with these athletes because you never know how much more of an impact you are really making in their lives other than just being their rugby coach.

Have a great season guys and I look forward to getting down to see a game or two.

Much Regards,

JK Anderson

  6.  Since our tryouts for rugby are happening in November, December, eligibility will be determined based on the final grade of the PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR! Official rugby matches start at end of January 2010, all students/players would need to maintain a GPO of 2.0 at the completion of the first semester to stay on the team for the second semester!
    1. School sports elegibilty rules: the CMS Board approves changes to policy on extracurricular activity

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education approved changes to Policy JJJ, Extracurricular Activity Eligibility, at its meeting on April 14. The policy covers eligibility requirements for middle and high school students who wish to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs.
Since 1993, CMS students have been required to have a grade-point average (GPA) of at least 2.0 to be eligible to participate. The amendments change when GPA is calculated for eligibility purposes. Under the new policy, it will be calculated at the end of the first semester and the end of the school year, instead of quarterly. CMS is one of the few districts in North Carolina to require the 2.0 GPA; that requirement has not changed.
Because of the complexity of CMS course scheduling, calculating GPA at the end of each quarter has become more difficult in recent years. Four-by-four block classes and virtual classes that students take online add to the difficulty.
“The change means student-athletes’ eligibility will be determined two times a year, instead of four,” said CMS Director of Athletics Vicki Hamilton. “Students who wish to participate in fall sports, such as football and cheerleading, will be eligible based on their final grade at the end of the previous year.”Tryouts for winter sports, including indoor track and basketball, usually happen in December. Athletic eligibility for those sports will also be determined based on their final grade at the end of the previous school year. However, students will need to have a GPA of at least 2.0 at the completion of the first semester (at the end of January) to stay on the team for the second semester. The changes take effect at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year and apply to fall sports.
