Glenelg's trek through the Howard County girls' soccer schedule was not easy. After winning only four of 11 county games, Howard's lone 1A school has reaped the benefits of playing such competition in the playoffs. Now Glenelg is just one step away from a third consecutive state championship after last night's 6-0 victory over Mardela of Salisbury in the 1A semifinals at Broadneck.

"We look for" tough competition during the regular season, said Glenelg Coach Dean Sheridan, who started only one senior this year. "I get here to the state tournament and say, 'Ladies, they can't do anything you haven't seen.' "

Glenelg (9-7-1) got on the board in the 13th minute when sophomore Rachel McCarriher scored the first of her two goals. Glenelg made it 2-0 eight minutes later when junior striker Katie Chase took a cross from junior Ellie Axenfeld and tallied her sixth goal. Chase and sophomores Catherine Cottrell and Emily Budman added second-half goals.
