BLAST WIN FC DELCO PLAYERS CUP PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP
The BLAST took home the championship this past weekend at the FC Delco Players Cup. Despite having three players out with injuries and a somewhat juggled lineup, the team continued to show heart and determination seemingly getting stronger with each match. This was every bit as true in the Championship Final played on Monday at USTC in Downingtown. The game got started with good combination play between Colby and Tyus. They penetrated the back line and Tyus finished cleanly to the far post to put the team 1-0 just a few minutes into the match. It wasn't long after that Brianna pushed the ball up the right side of the field and hit a cross on the run finding Colby closing on the far post who one-timed a header down and into the net. The team led 2-0 at halftime. East Meadow came out strong in the second half, however the defense was not going to yield a goal on the day. East Meadow attacked early but were unable to get significant pressure on the net. The BLAST used quick counterattacks but then settled in and played the ball around quite well before Sam hit a 25-yard shot into the upper right corner to put the team up 3-0. Maddie R. rounded out the scoring at 4-0. Amy and Regan controlled the middle of the defense all day with great support at the outside from Amira, Morgan and Nat R. Haley posted the championship shutout in fine fashion to end a great weekend of soccer. The BLAST punched their ticket it to the finals of the FC Delco Players Cup Championship match with a 3-1 win over FC Delco 95's on Sunday in the semi finals of the Premier Division. The team advanced after winning their bracket earlier in the day. Colby scored the game winning goal with less than 30 seconds remaining in the final preliminary match vs. East Meadow, NY. to win 3-2. East Meadow erased a 2-0 second half deficit but the team wouldn't fold. It was a good thing, because the goal allowed the team to take the division and advance to face FC Delco. All weekend the team rallied back from adversity with a strong team effort. Their biggest offensive output occurred in a 4-1 in over Mt. Laurel, NJ. At some point during the weekend, every member of the team was required to step up and make a big play. A number of injuries often forced the lineup to be juggled, but the girls performed heroically. Bracket B proved to be the strongest as East Meadow claimed a wild card and earned a trip back to the finals vs. The BLAST with their own semi final victory. Good luck girls!

BLAST WRAP UP MAPS LEAGUE WITH WIN OVER WALL, NJ
The BLAST completed their MAPS "A" League with a victory at home over Wall, NJ, the New Jersey State runner up. The BLAST had a number of quality opportunities, but Colby scored the game's only goal on a series of crisp passing before she made a great move and finished cleanly. Both Colby and Tyus had success getting in behind the defense and forced the keeper to often come out of the penalty box. The team just missed going up 2-0 when Phoebe played a perfect driven ball that knifed between the Wall defenders with Steph just missing on a one-timer. The Blast defense did a stellar job of quality defending by only allowing opportunities off of corner kicks. Otherwise it was a routine day in net for Haley. The defense did a great job covering each other and were often starting the attack from the left and right side.
Next up: State Cup
BLAST MAKE JEFFERSON CUP CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
The Hockessin BLAST advanced to the Championship Match of the 2009 Jefferson Cup Premier Division. The BLAST battled through a scoreless tie and headed into OT where they dropped a 1-0 Decision to FC Delco (PA). Despite having the better chances during regulation, the team was unable to find the net and allowed an OT breakdown to give FC Delco a chance inside the penalty spot to go 1 vs. 1 with the BLAST GK. Despite the overtime loss, the team continued to show progression as they advanced to the final of a major tournament. During the preliminary round the team demonstrated an improved possession game which they were able to convert into many offensive opportunities. The first match versus North Meck SC 95 Red (NC) ended in a 1-1 tie despite the team having a sizeable advantage in terms of shots, possession time and opportunities. They went down 1-0 by half but were able to battle back when Sam P. took a nice pass from Colby. Sam penetrated the back line, took a touch to the right and then picked a perfect spot to beat an outstanding GK from North Meck. The goal resulted from quick passing originating at the outside left back by Amira, to the outside midfield into the middle up to the front line and dropped off again to the overlapping center mid before Sam put the ball away. The North Meck GK had to make several oustanding saves to perserve the tie. In the second match, the BLAST defeated Freestate (WAGS Div 1) 3-1 on goals by Regan, Maddie and Colby. Regan scored on a 25 yard, one time volley that blew past the Freestate GK. Maddie's goal came on an assist by Colby as she made a great inside run. The Blast second goal put the team up after the game had been tied half 1-1. The Blast extended their lead to 3-1 when Colby battled in deep and hit a tough angle on the right side of the goal for her first goal to go along with 2 assists in the tourney. The best goal that didn't count would have to go to the 35 yard crossing ball that Steph D. headed one time into the net, but the assistant referee signaled offsides and the goal was waived off. The team led their bracket after day 1. Day two found them battling WAGS Div One team Sterling (VA). The Blast put on a clinic for the first 20 minutes of the match moving the ball around at ease before Maddie connected on Sam P's corner kick for her second goal of the tournament. The Blast continued after half time and made the game 2-0 on a goal by Colby, her second of the tournament. Sterling scored when Haley made a great high save that hit off the bar and bounced back towards the net. A diving Haley made a sprawling save before she was rammed by a Sterling forward knocking the ball loose. The referee, however, ruled that the ball was across the line before Haley made the save and was subsequently fouled. Despite the goal, the BLAST held on for the victory to advance the Championship round. Next up: Hockessin Tournament
BLAST WIN PAGS PREMIER CHAMPIONSHIP!
The BLAST won the PAGS Premier Division championship on Sunday, November 16th at Radnor High School. The victory earned the girls a championship in the top division, of eight divisions overall, in a league that features nearly 80 teams from Baltimore, Delaware, and Eastern Pennsylvania. Overall PAGS features nearly 450 girls soccer teams from U-9 to U-19. The Blast ended their league season with a record of 9-1-1 and an overall record of 14-4-4.
This victory marked the first Championship for Hockessin Soccer Club in the highest premier division of PAGS U11-15 dating back over 8 years!
The season featured an undefeated run at the prestigious WAGS tournament in Virginia. The Blast defeated FC Delco in the championship game 1-0 on a header goal by McKenzie off of a corner kick from Sam. Haley earned the shutout victory, her 7th of the league season and 12th overall on the Fall. Strong team defense was a staple of the team’s play throughout the entire season. The defense was led by center backs McKenzie and Meredith. Outside backs Amira, Natalie R., Morgan, and Amy all had important roles in leading the shut out efforts. In the championship match, Haley made two great saves in the second half to preserve the shutout. She shut down an FC Delco breakaway and made another amazing, acrobatic save to the far post. The team earned their trip to the finals with a 4-1 victory over BSA Rage on Saturday, November 15th. The team was led by Tyus' four goal performance. Assisting on the goals were two by Sam and an assist by Colby. The balance of explosive offensive play, improved possession game and great team defense all were significant factors in the team’s success this Fall. The Blast are the reigning state champions and will begin their defense of that title this Spring. They will open their Spring season with a trip to The Jefferson Cup in Richmond, Virginia.
WOMEN'S LAX BREAKS THROUGH TO FINAL VS. TOWSON
This year, we have four relatives of our Blast teammates that are either coaching or playing at the NCAA Division 1 level. Coaching is certainly the theme in the Ciarrocca family! Kim is the head coach of Women's Lacrosse at the University of Delaware, while Kirk is the co-offensive coordinator and quarterback's coach at Rutgers University. Stephanie Rinschler, sister of Natalie, was a freshman standout at University of Delaware in Women's Soccer while Scarlett Fakhar, step-daughter of Coach Ted, has signed a letter of intent to play for Elon University Women's Soccer in North Carolina. Keep an eye on this feature for games, stats and information. UPDATE: The Women's Lacrosse team advanced to the conference championship to take on Towson, MD. This was their first trip to the finals after having previously reached the semi-finals on two other occasions during Coach Ciarrocca's tenure. The team staged a late match rush but fell just short versus the #4 seed, Towson. Congratulations on a great season!

BLAST PREPARE FOR PAGS PLAYOFFS WITH SET OF WEEKEND SCRIMMAGES
The Blast continued preparations for the PAGS playoffs with two weekend srimmages vs. the Medford Spirit and Hockessin U14 Spirit Freedom. On Saturday, the team traveled to Medford, NJ for a scrimmage vs. the Medford Spirit. Hockessin jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Sam and Maddie but were unable to close out the match. Medford scored two second half goals to earn a 2-2 tie. On Sunday, The Blast squared off against the U14 Spirit Freedom. The Spirit notched the first goal after stripping the ball from the Hockessin attacking player at the top of their own box and going the distance on a breakaway. Haley made a good attempt but the Spirit attacker pushed the ball wide and finished cleanly. Sam was able to knot the score at 1-1 just before half on nice shot from the right side of the box. Colby made it 2-1 on a great effort in the box before Reagan turned on a ball and ripped an upper-90 shot to stretch the lead to 3-1. Steph D. rounded off the scoring as the game ended to close it out 4-1. Next up: PAGS Semi Finals

BLAST DEFEAT FC DELCO TO END REGULAR SEASON AT 7-1-1
The Blast hosted FC Delco on a perfect Saturday at the Smith Estate turf field. The first half yielded a number a Blast corner kicks and good scoring opportunities off of them, but the team was unable to push the ball across. The best first half opportunity from the run of play came on Stephanie's overlapping run which eventually found her 1 vs. 1 with the keeper who made a great stop. Delco played well in the first half and had the better of the possession. Hockessin re-grouped at half time and re-committed to building the ball in deeper. As the team found a better rhythm, the scoring opportunities started to mount. The center midfield began to control the flow of the game which allowed them to create opportunities for others. A combination from Regan to Tyus to Colby, who then played a beautiful ball to Maddie may have been the most attractive soccer of the day. Maddie just missed when the keeper saved the ball behind her just shy of the goal line. The team started to sense that they could break through and continued to press. A number of good moves by Natalie H. created another quality chance inside the box. Finally, Colby got the job done with a great move just inside the penalty spot and finished cleanly to give the team a 1-0 lead with 7 minutes to play. Haley recorded her sixth straight shutout behind a great team defense who sorted out the Delco front runners very well. The team secured a playoff spot and will finish no worse than second in the division.

BLAST DEFEAT BSA RAGE 1-0 ON LATE GOAL
The Blast made the trip to Reading, PA on Sunday afternoon to take on the BSA Rage. BSA played a strong match and gave a spirited effort but a late goal by Tyus put Hockessin ahead and sealed the victory. A heavy, cross wind blew consistently during the game that saw a concentration of play at the midfield. Both teams played very "quickly" and were quite happy to play an up-tempo match. The Rage had the best chance of the first half but were denied by Haley's fine save. The Blast did a good job of penetrating the Rage back four but were often denied by the GK playing high in and sometimes out of the box. HSC thought they would be awarded a PK after a corner kick saw the ball come out and get re-directed on net which was then knocked down by the Rage midfielder. No call ensued and the game played on. The game became more physical and more spirited in the second half and neither team was ready to back down. The Rage had two good opportunities in the second half when they played one ball wide of the net and saw Haley make a good stop going to her left on a direct kick from approximately 25 yards out. The Blast continued to battle earning a number of corner kicks but were unable to knock one home. Finally, Tyus broke through on a ball played by Sam touching the ball around the charging keeper, who was 30 or so yards out, and knocking it along the ground and into the goal. With five minutes remaining both teams continued to challenge one another, but the score was final at 1-0. The Blast move to 6-1-1 on the season and remain in first place. Next up: Saturday vs. FC Delco

THREE GAMES, NO LOSSES, NO GOALS AGAINST, NO SEMI FINALS
The Blast traveled to Virginia to compete in the "A" Bracket of WAGS Tournament this past weekend. Facing two teams from New Jersey and one team from North Carolina, the team squared off first against Mount Laurel Jewels. The game featured a number of Blast opportunities on a rough field but the one that counted was a corner kick from Sam P. that Tyus knocked in. The team fought through the conditions and the heat, utilizing all seventeen players, to earn the victory. The shutout in goal for Haley as her second consecutive behind a very solid defense that didn't allow many good looks from the Mt. Laurel side. A more cohesive back four did a good job all game of keeping the pressure to the outside and away from the front of the net. The second game of the tournament was a match-up against CASL from Raleigh, NC. The game got off to a furious start with Colby breaking through in the opening two minutes. The charging GK took a hard shot off of the chest and suffered what appeared to be a significant injury. The game on turf featured countless opportunities to include 2 point-blank shots from inside the penalty spot, 3 breakaways, and a number of corner kicks. Unfortunately, the missed opportunities would come back to haunt the team later. It wasn't until 20 minutes into the second half did the Blast break through. Sam P. took a look forward and played a nice through ball to Tyus who had made a timely run. Tyus didn't hesitiate and finsished cleanly for her second goal of the tournament earning the team their second, consecutive 1-0 victory. The shutout streak continued into the second match on Sunday against a determined Matchfit Academy from New Jersey. The Blast refused to allow a goal and managed to make it through the tournament without allowing a ball to hit the back of the net. Unfortunately, the team was also unable to score and the 0-0 tie held up. It appeared as though a penalty kick was forthcoming when Tyus was taken down violently approx. 10 yards from goal, but the referee played on and swallowed the whistle. The team did a nice job of winning balls in the air and adjusted well to the poor field conditions. Defensively, the Blast yielded few opportunities which was a credit to both the midfield and defensive backs which both demontrated a solid commitment to defensive transition. In the end, the team finished tied for first in the bracket with an identical set of statistics to Matchfit. A penalty kick shoot-out ensued and the results weren't good. The team failed advance as a result of the shoot-out round despite going undefeated and not yielding a single goal. While the indivdual results were quite good, the team certainly has a sense of missed opportunity and desire to finish the season on a high note. Two league matches remain in the regular season before the team looks forward to a deep playoff run.
