Week of May 25th Minors Tuesday: 5/26/09Twice this season before the Petro Knights had faced the undefeated Byram CarWash Seadog’s and both times these games were some of the best baseball played this year by any two teams. The third time they played wasn’t any different! The Seadogs jumped on the Knights right away with 3 big hits by Corry Lidell, Joe Moschella, and Matt Helfrich in the first inning but the Knights answered back by shutting them down with great put-outs at home and second, and then scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the first on smart base running. The Seadogs came right back in the 3rd inning with key hits from Joe Moschella and Owen Brooks, scoring 4! But the Knight’s grabbed one more in the 5th on back to back hits by Dylan Connell and Ryan Schnieder. Pitchers for both teams, including Brian Kalumba, Jared Miller and Trevor Prime for the Knights and Joe Moschella, Matt Helfrich and Cameron Baker for the Seadogs, threw a total of 25 strikeouts and brought the game to a 4-4 tie moving into the 6th. Vincent Molinari lead off the bottom of the 6th with a base hit and with 2 outs Brian Kalemba smashed a gapper all the way to the fence. A walk-off, colossal hit for Kalemba to win the game! It was the kind of game you hate to see anyone lose! Final Score: Seadogs 4, Knights 5.
Lackawanna Thunder (11) vs.. Raptors (0) -Troy DuPont, Zac Cluett and Jay Pruden all hit RBI doubles -Zac Kain hit an RBI triple -Kyle Ried and Ricky Proctor each had a base hit.
-Jay Pruden got the start and went 3 hitless innings with 6 K's
-Thomas Pisillo finished strong giving up only one hit in the 5th.
Major Division
-The SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees beat the Hopatcong Mets by a score of 10 -1. Ryan Lindner pitched 3 solid innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits while striking out 6 and Frank Cutrone pitched 2 innings not allowing a hit and striking out 6 batters. On offense, the Yankees were led by leadoff hitter Tyler Prime who had a 1 hit and an RBI, Cutrone who had a hit and 2 RBIs, Pat Togno who was 2-3 with an RBI, Kyle Piekarz who knocked a triple for 2 RBIs, and Justin Faschan who blasted a double to knock in another run.
-The SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees beat the Lackawanna Red Sox by a score of 5-2 in a rain soaked game. Shawn Hills pitched 4 shutout innings striking out 10 batters and not allowing a hit. Tyler Prime pitched the final two innings for the save. On offense the Yankees were led by Ryan Lindner who had a double and triple knocking in 4 runs, and Pat Togno who had 2 hits and stole home for a key insurance run.
-The Professional Sports Camp Mets beat the SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees by a score of 8-7. The Mets were led by Tyler Hillenbrand who pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball. Hillebrand helped his own cause with a hit and 2 RBIs. John Dondero had a double with 2 RBIs, Vinny Carlesi reached base 3 times and scored twice, and Hayden Samiljan had a hit an 1 RBI. In a losing effort, the Yankees were led by Shawn Hills who was 3-3 with 2 runs scored, Ryan Lindner who went 2-3 with an RBI, and Pat Togno who also went 2-3 with an RBI. The Yankees rallied for 6 runs in the top of the 6th inning but fell short in this exciting game.
-The SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees beat the Lakeland Cubs by a score of 10-0. Shawn Hills pitched a complete game striking out 8 batters while only allowing 4 hits. The Yankees had another well rounded offensive attack led hit Hills who had a hit and 2 runs scored, Ryan Lindner with a hit and RBI, Pat Togno with a hit and 2 RBIs, Nick Leonard with a hit and an RBI, and Zachary Fowler who blasted a hard single to knock in two key runs during a 2nd inning rally.
Major Mets
The Hobb Engler Mets beat the Lackawanna Red Sox on Saturday, May 30th by the score of 5 - 2. Below are some of the highlights from the game:
-Mark Lisi pitched 4 outstanding innings of no hit ball.
-Quincy Samson pitched the final 2 innings striking out 3 for the save.
-Mark Lisi and Quincy Samson combined for a 1 hit game in the winning effort.
-Dan Rafferty had a triple and RBI.
-Hayden Somiljan added a single and RBI.
-Danny Purdon played superb defense at third base.
On Wednesday, May 27th the Hobb Engler Mets beat the Newton Mets by the score of 17-1. Below are some highlights from the game:
-Austin Markferding pitched 3 no hit innings. He also had a single and double in the winning effort.
-Vinny Carlesi had 2 hits and 2 RBI's. He also closed the last game striking out 2.
-Quincy Samson hit a mamoth home run in the second inning and played a solid game at 1st base.
-Dan Purdon added a base hit and 2 RBI's in the win.
-Austin Markferding and Vinny Carlesi combined for a no hitter.
On Thursday, May 28th the Hobb Engler Mets beat the Hobb Engler Dodgers by the score of 9 - 4.
Below are the highlights from this game:
-Eddie Lehr pitched 2 1/3 innings shutting down the Dodgers. He also had 5 RBI's on the day hitting a single and triple.
-Danny Rafferty closed out the game. He also added 2 doubles and had an RBI.
-John Dondero made a huge catch on a line drive that saved 2 runs.
-Hayden Somiljan added a base hit and RBI.
Week of May 18th
Seadogs move to 8-0 despite 6th inning scare against raptors!
The Byram Car wash Seadogs defeated the Jefferson lake raptors 11-6. raptors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an rbi double by.Trevor......... The seadogs came back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on a single by Super Joe Moschella then a 2 run homer by cameron Baker (4th of the year), followed by joey ruggieri's triple and Owen Brooks' rbi single. Matt helfrich (3-0) had another 8 strike outs. the Seadogs bulit an 11-2 lead going into the top of the 6th. When Cameron baker walked the bases loaded and then gave up a grand slam by..Jacaob P..... before getting the final three outs and notching the teams 8th victory of the season, Seadog pitching combined to strike out 15 of 18 Raptors
On Monday, May 18th the Hobb Engler Mets beat the Hobb Engler Yankees. The final score was 8 - 7.
Here are some highlights from the game:
-Tyler Hillenbrand pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball.
-Tyler Hillenbrand had a base hit and 2 RBI's.
-John Donero had a double and 2 RBI's
-Vinny Carlesi got on base 3 times and scored 2 runs.

Byram Car wash seadogs out slugged the Thunder 13-6.
Joe moschella (2-0) Matt Helfrich (hold-2), and cameron Baker, held off Jay Pruden and the thunder. Seadogs took a 3 -1 lead after 1 then added 4 more in the 3rd for a 7-1 lead. Cameron Baker had 4 rbi and joey ruggieri came thru with a 3 run doble to cap off the scoring for the Seadogs. up 13-1 in the bottom of the 5th the thunder came rolling back on a 3 run doulbe by heavy hitting Jay Pruden who earlier in the game hit a monstorous 2 run triple that almost went out of the park.! Corey Lidell came on in relief of Cameron Baker to notch the victory for the Seadogs. It was the seadogs 7th victory in a row and they are 7-0 to start the season.
Tuesday 05/19/09
In an extra inning contest, the Byram Hobb Engler Dodgers topped the Hopatcong Yankees by a score of 6-3. Frankie Orlando belted a 2 run homerun, the first of his career, over the centerfield fence in the top of the 7th inning to put the Dodgers up for good. Zack Nunn dropped an RBI single into right field to add an insurance run. Zak Kronenfeld delivered a fantastic pitching performance. Zak pitched 5 2/3 innings and struck out 11 batters before reaching his pitch count limit. Zak helped his cause by batting 2 for 2 with 2 singles and 2 RBIs and 1 run scored. Tommy Armstrong added an RBI by going 1 for 3 on the day. The Dodgers evened their league play record to 4-4.
Week of May 11th
The Lakeside Construction Phillies of the Junior League led the North Warren Yankess 20-8 when the game was suspended due to darkness in the fourth inning. Greg Walker and Chris Sclafani both tallied two safeties for the Phillies during the game. On Saturday, the Phillies edged the PBA Local 138 Rangers of Lackawanna, 4-3. Greg Walker's two-run single tied the game in the top of the third, and a bases-loaded walk to Mike Deerfield brought in the winning run in the bottom of the fourth. Deerfield earned the win with an outstanding 4-2/3 innings striking out five. Ryan Wohltman equaled the task iin relief to earn the save while whiffing three to even the Phils record at 2-2.
The score for the Thunder vs. Raptors on Sat. 5/16 was Thunder 6 Raptors 2.
Zac Kain hit a grand slam home run.
The Hobb Engler Mets beat the Lakeland Cubs on Saturday, May 16th. The final score was 9 - 2. Below are some highlights:
-Mark Lisi pitched 3 innings giving up one earned run and also had a triple and 2 RBI's.
-Dan Rafferty pitched 3 shut out innings
-John Dondero and Hayden Samijan also each added a single and each had an RBI
**-Dan Lefever made an outstanding shoe string catch in left to end the game. He also contributed with a walk and scored a run.
**Please make sure this highlight makes it into the newspaper. It may be the only opportunity for him to get his name in the paper and it would mean a great deal to him. He's a great kid and it would mean a lot for his confidence.
Overall it was a very good team win with the whole team contributing in the victory in some way either with their bats or in the field.
05/16/09 The benches cleared in the 5th inning of the contest between the Byram Hobb Engler Dodgers and the Lakeland Mets. No, it was not a brawl that caused this. Dodgers’ team mascot, Sonny Figiel, entertained the players and fans by running about the field for 10 minutes before leaving on his accord. The entertainment came as players from both teams dove and slid around the field in attempts to catch the playful canine. In the end, the Dodgers dropped the contest 2-0. Adam Varian turned in a solid pitching performance by allowing only 2 runs and recording 8 Ks in 5 innings. 05/16/09 In the second game of a home and home double header between the Byram Hobb Engler Dodgers and Lakeland Mets a tightly played contest entertained all of those on hand. Tommy Armstrong started and pitched 3 solid innings allowing just 2 runs. Tommy helped his cause by belting a 2 run homerun, the first of his career, over the centerfield fence. Tommy went 2 for 3 on the day with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Two innings later, Alex Kalemba picked up where Tommy left off by belting a solo home run, the first of his career, over the centerfield fence. Alex went 2 for 3 on the day with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Greg Cooper has a career performance this day. In the 3rd inning, his ‘Johnny Damon like’ slide and catch in centerfield stopped a Lakeland rally to end the inning. His solid performance behind the plate kept the game close until the 6th inning when Lakeland opened up a 5 run lead. The Dodgers fought back in the bottom half of the sixth to pull within two runs. Then with 2 outs Greg Cooper stepped to the plate. After going down in the count 0-2, Greg Cooper hit a walk off double to drive in 2 runs and bring the Dodgers to victory 9-8.
05/14/09 Byram Hobb Engler Dodgers defeated the Hopatcong Yankees 10-5. Zak Kronenfeld started and pitched 2 innings to gain the victory. In his performance, he allowed just 3 runs and recorded 3 Ks. Zak helped his cause by going 2 for 2 at the plate with two RBIs and 2 runs scored. Kyle Dellosso went 2 for 3 with 4 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Frank Orlando also went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jonathan Figiel called a solid game behind the plate throwing out two base runners attempting to steal.

The Hobb Engler Mets won another one against the Lakeland Cubs on Wednesday, May 13th. The final score was 14 - 4. Highlights from the game:
-Donovan Kimker had 2 hits and 3 RBI's
-Eddie Lehr had the win on the mound and had 2 hits with a couple of RBI's
-Danny Rafferty added 2 hits and had an RBI.

The SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees defeated Hopatcong by a score of 10-1. The Yankees pitching was solid led by Ryan Lindner who struck out 6 in 3 innings while allowing only 2 hits. Frank Cutrone then came in relief and struck out 6 batters in 2 innings. Leadoff hitter Tyler Prime was 1-3 with an RBI and run scored, Shawn Hills was 1-3 with a run scored, Frank Cutrone was 1-2 with 2 RBIs, Pat Togno was 2-3 with an RBI and also stole home in the 4th with the go ahead run, Kyle Piekarz was 1-3 with a triple and 3 RBIs, and Justin Faschan was 1-1 with a double and an RBI. Solid effort by the entire team.

The SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees lost their first game of the season under the lights at Newton by a score of 12-7. The Yankees went ahead 7-2 by scoring 6 runs in the top of the 3rd but the Newton Mets responded with 6 runs in the bottom of the inning. Then they scored another 4 insurance runs in the bottom of the 5th. In a losing effort the Yankees were led by two outstanding defensive plays by Tim Basile in leftfield. Nick Leonard was 2-3 including a double and 2 RBIs. Ryan Lindner went 2-3 with 2 RBIs while Kyle Piekarz had 2 hits and 1 RBI.

5-4. Justin Chuck homered and Chris Harder pitched a scoreless inning for the Raptors.

Major Division- Wednesday, May 5th
The SALT Gastropub/Cones by Design Yankees defeated the Professional Sports Camp Mets by a score of 6-4. The Yankees came back from a 4-0 deficit to score 6 runs in the 3rd inning and hold off the Mets to win the game. Mets pitcher Austin Markferding held off the powerful Yankee offense for 2 1/3 innings by striking out 5 batters. But the Yankee bats came alive led by Frank Cutrone who was 3-3 with an RBI, Ryan Lindner with a double and 2 RBIs, and Pat Togno with a double and 1 RBI. On defense the Yankees made key plays to shut down Met rallies. In the 3rd, Nick Leonard ran down a hard hit liner in leftfield off the bat of Danny Rafferty. And in the top of the 6th, the Mets Quincy Samson hit a shot to deep leftfield that was caught on the fly by Cutrone in leftfield. And on the mound, Shawn Hills came in relief for the win by striking out 5 Mets while giving up only 1 hit. The Mets were led by Eddie Lehr who had a long triple and 2 RBIs.
__________ Minors - 5/7 Thursday night 5/7 HE Minors baseball: Thunder/XXX vs. Knights/Petro Oil. Brilliant pitching by starters Jay Pruden (Thunder - 4 innings 8K’s) and Trevor Prime 3 (Knights - 3 innings 8K’s) and relievers Thomas Pissillo (Thunder) and Jared Miller (Knights) put these two teams in a close 6(T)-4(K) game, heading into the bottom of the 5th. The Thunder had big hits by Zac Cluett and Ralph Hall both with triples. But in the 5th inning the Knight’s bats woke up with key hits by Ronald Lucchesi, Nick Gentile (double-game tying and winning RBI’s) and Vincent Molinari, putting the Knight’s ahead, 6-8 moving to the 6th and final inning. Knight’s Bryan Kalemba then struck out the side to give the Knights their 2nd win of the season. Week of April 27th
The Byram Animal Hospital/Tilcon Cardinals beat the Sidoti Dental/Rachel's Italian Ice Dodgers by a score of 13-2. The Cardinals had 11 hits led by Nick Sabatini who went 3 for 4 and Tim Hartman who went 3 for 3. Sabatini started and went 3+ innings of strong pitching. For the Dodgers Adam Varian, John Figiel, Alex Kalemba, Zack Kronenfeld, and Sam Connery had hits.
The SALT Gastropub/Cones by Design Yankees had another come from behind victory to beat the Newton Mets by a score of 14-13. After trailing 7-2, the Yankees scored 9 runs in the bottom of the fifth to go ahead 11-7. Newton fought back with 6 runs in the top of the sixth to take a 13-11 lead. But the Yankees did not give up. In the bottom of the sixth, Frank Cutrone led off the inning with a hard triple to left centerfield. Then clean up hitter Ryan Lindner belted a two run homer over the right centerfield fence to tie the game. Pat Togno followed with another triple and scored the winning run on an infield hit by Kyle Piekarz. On offense the Yankees were led by leadoff hitter Tyler Prime who was 3-3 with a double and 2 runs scored. Cutrone went 3-4 with the triple and 2 runs scored while Lindner pounded out 3 hits including a double, the homer, and 5 RBIs. Togno contributed 2 hits including the triple and 2 RBIs, Nick Leonard was 2-3 with 2 RBIs, and Justin Faschan had a hit and RBI. On defense pitcher Tyler Prime struck out 5 Newton hitters, second baseman Joe Lapinski made a key force out in the 5th inning, and centerfielder Pat Togno made a great running catch to stop a Newton rally.
Major Division
On Thursday, the SALT Gastro Pub/Cones by Design Yankees beat Lakeland with a come from behind victory of 9 to 6. Pitching and defense again did a great job. Shawn Hills did a fabulous job starting on the mound striking out 6 batters. Pat Togno provided good middle relief and Frank Cutrone came in to close the game by striking out the side in the 6th. Defensively, Joe Lapinski stopped a hard hit line drive to slow down a Lakeland rally in the 4th and Frank Cutrone made a sliding catch in centerfield in the 2nd inning. On offense, a great show again by the Yankees. Tyler Prime and Kyle Pieckarz had key RBIs. Frank Cutrone went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 runs scored. Ryan Lindner and Patrick Togno each had a hit, an RBI, and reached base by being hit by the pitcher(ouch!). Zachary Fowler and Justin Faschan also reached base and each scored a run. And the red hot Nick Leonard on his birthday went 2 for 2 with an inside the park homer and 3 RBIs.
Majors
The Dodgers earned their first victory of the season by defeating the Cardinals 12 - 5. Adam Varian recorded the victory with three solid innings on the mound giving up only three runs (1 earned run, 2 unearned runs). Alex Kalemba provided 3 solid innings of relief pitching while gathering 5 strikeouts. Solid defense was provided by Sam Connery in leftfield and John Figiel behind the plate. Tommy Armstrong, Alex Kalemba and John Figiel each had 2 RBIs as a result of their solid hitting. Stevie Leyden led the Cardinals offense by belting a 2 run inside the park home run. David DelSontro recorded 4 strike outs in 2 solid innings of relief. Zac Mazzarisi's heads up base running allowed him to steal home on a passed ball in the second inning.
The Major Mets won their first game last night against Lackawanna. The final score was 12 - 5. Danny Rafferty hit a home run and pitched 2 shut out innings while on offense Donovan Kimker had 3 base hits. Quincy Samson pitched 2 innings giving up only 2 earned runs. Additionally Eddie Lehr added 2 base hits and 4 RBI's and John Dondero had a base hit and 2 RBI's.
Dodgers record fell to 1-2 with a loss to Hopatcong on 4/29 by a score of 10-4. Hopatcong broke open a 3-3 tie by rallying five runs in the fourth inning in a game shortened due to darkness. For the Dodgers, John Figiel went 2 for 2, two singles, 2 stolen bases, one run scored and an RBI. John Figiel was the starting pitcher for the Dodgers. He struck out 5 batters and allowed 3 earned runs in 3 innings of work.
The Major Mets beat the Newton Mets 10 - 3. Eddie Lehr pitched 2 innings giving up no earned runs and also had 3 hits in the winning effort. Mark Lisi went 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's and pitched 2 scoreless innings. Danny Rafferty went 3 for 4 and Quincy Samson had a single and 2 RBI's. Vinny Carlesi also knocked in 2 RBI's. It was a very good team effort as all the players contributed in some way for the win.
Minors
Seadogs no hit thunder! 11-0. Matt Helfrich (1-0) pitched 3 shutout no hit innings while striking out 7 batters, Cameron Baker (hold-1)then continued the no hitter with 2 innings of scoreless ball. Joey ruggieri went 1-2 with a walk and 3 rbi. He leads the team with 6 and a .750 avg. Jacob Falleni had a run scoring triple. Cameron Baker also had 2 hits for the 2-0 seadogs.Corey Lidell andOwne Brooks combined on a double play in the 4th inning to stymie the thunder’s rally with the bases loaded on walks. Jay Rruden started for the Thunder and took the loss.
Major Division
-The SALT Gastropub/Cones by Design Yankees beat the Lackawanna Rangers by a score of 10-6 in a game shortened by darkness after 5 innings. The Yankees combined pitching of Ryan Lindner (5 K's) & Kyle Piekarz (4 K's) along with Shawn Hills who shut down two powerful hitters with strikeouts in the top of the 5th. The defensive highlight of the game was a great running catch in leftfield by Nick Leonard off a shot from Lackawanna's Nick Grant that stopped a key rally. On offense the team was again led by leadoff hitter Tyler Prime who reached base 3 times and scored each time. Ryan Lindner went 2 for 3 with a double and 4 RBIs and Pat Togno also went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs. The winning run came in the bottom of the 5th when Luke Pickett walked and was moved over to second on a single by Tyler Prime. Then Frank Cutrone drilled a single up the middle to score the winning run of the game.
Opening Day
Spring is Here! Byram Hobb Engler 2009 Opening Day Summary
On Saturday, the Byram Hobb Engler Little League kicked off its 2009 season with a day blessed with warm weather and a great day of ceremonies, fun, and baseball. Over 200 players marched in the parade of teams and were joined by the Knights of Columbus Color Guard Assembly 2716 and two Byram residents who have just returned from military service, Army serviceman T.J. Hartman and Marine Brian Moreland. Hartman and Moreland threw out the ceremonial first pitches with family members involved in the league to start the season. Mayor Skip Danielson, Town Manager Joe Sabatini, members of the town council, Recreation Director Janet Meisner, and Scooter the mascot of the Sussex Skyhawks participated in the opening ceremonies. Board members, coaches, and family members were on hand to enjoy the beautiful warm day at CO Johnson Park. League President Shawn Armstrong served as announcer of the event and Junior Division player Brian Tufaro led the players in reciting the Little League Player Oath. Members of the 2008 All Star teams were recognized for their performance with a presentation of plaques by their managers and coaches. These included the 8/9, 10/11, and 11/12 year olds, as well as the Junior division squad.
Opening Day Scores were:
Junior Division- The Lakeside Construction Phillies exploded for five runs in the top of the fourth to take a 5-2 lead and held off the K&N Brewers, 13-11, to win the opener. Ryan Wohltman and David Kain started the inning off with consecutive singles and scored on Eric Korevo's triple. Matt Hill knocked Koreivo in with a sac fly. Vinny Garatino singled in Grag Walker and Austin Mulligan's bases-loaded walk brought home Mike Deerfield. The Phils pounded out 13 hits. Ken Costa had a single and double for the Brewers in a losing effort.

led by strong pitching from Frank Cutrone who struck out 9 batters and Pat Togno who came in relief to close the game. On offense the Yanks were led by Nick Leonard who had a grand slam, and Togno, Ryan Lindner, and Luke Pickett who combined for 4 hits and 6 additional RBIs. The Yanks Tim Basile made an unassisted double play to stop a Dodger rally. In a losing effort the Dodgers were led by Jonathan Figiel who reached base twice and an outstanding defensive play by catcher Adam Varian who caught a short looper to stop a Yankee rally in the 2nd.
-The Byram Animal Hospital/Tilcon Cardinals beat the Professional Sports Camp Mets 16 to 5. The Cardinals were led by David Del Sontro, Tim Hartman, and Jett Beck who each had 2 hits and 3 RBIs and Stevie Leyden who knocked in 9 runs on 3 key hits. In a losing effort the Mets were led by Danny Rafferty who scored 2 runs and pitched a scoreless inning.
Minor Division- The Coffee Talk Kitchen Riverdogs beat the Jefferson Lake Camp Raptors by a score of 14 to 12.
-The Byram Car Wash Seadogs beat the Petro Oil Knights by a score of 9 to 6.
Thanks to all members of the opening day committee, the board of directors, coaches, volunteers, and family members for making the 2009 Opening Day a special one!
