Hillsborough Soccer
Club Program Letter from
HSC Board of
Directors 4/24/2012
Dear Parents:
Thank you for your student athlete’s participation in the
Hillsborough Soccer Club. The Board
continues to work hard developing quality programs which provide a safe, fun,
and competitive learning experience for each of its players as we have for over
35 years. As
you will see this is a dynamic process as we continue to strive to provide more
value while keeping the overall costs in check.
Current Success leads to Future Plans:
We strongly believe that the foundation of every team is the
families of our players and the parent coaches who give freely of their
time. Every team and coach approaches
the year and training a little differently.
Through the inclusion of professional trainers, we strive to standardize
the level of training in order to offer the highest value to the players and
take advantage of our negotiating power for the families. Thanks to the changes
we implemented this year in 2010, we have seen great advances from the
increased use of professional trainers especially at the youngest ages but also
throughout the entire organization.
These changes have certainly come with challenges but overall we believe
the player experience is richer, more consistent, and ultimately, better, under
this program structure.
Based on the player’s and team successes since 2010, the
board has agreed to continue the focus on professional training and require
that all teams in HSC follow this model.
We believe that our members see the value as we do and we encourage you
to seek out and speak with parents with players currently being led by a
professional trainer.
During the past 2 years (2010-2011 and 2011-2012), the HSC
Board intentionally subsidized the team costs through the club’s reserve
savings. The subsidy was approved as the
training model shifted from using parent coaches for 66% of the training to a
program utilizing 100% training by high quality professional trainers. Obviously this subsidy cannot continue
forever and this year the fee has been increased. At the end of this letter, you will find a
complete breakdown of the costs associated with each program. As a board, we remain committed to
transparency and always welcome interested families to attend our parent &
board meetings which are currently held the 3rd Tuesday of each
month.
Your thoughts and
support are critical to the success of your club and programs. If you would like to take a more active role
in the club, there are numerous ways from participating as team parents,
attending the club parent meeting s each month or Annual General Membership
meeting, or joining the 100% volunteer Board of Directors. We welcome any offers of support or
recommendations that you may have.
Working with @300 players on 15 teams, we can use all the help that is available.
As we continue in our efforts to make a difference, we hope
that you will use this information to make a well informed decision about the
value of our program. We continue to
believe that our program offers a high quality value for the price.
Each year, the Board establishes the player registration fee
which covers some or all costs associated with weekly professional training
&/or coaching, field and equipment maintenance, game day referees, player
registration, fees to the state soccer leagues, reimbursement for continuing
education & training for coaches, police background checks, and insurance
policies. To negotiate the best overall
pricing for training and to establish the baseline reimbursement levels for
each team, we used the proposal from Dutch Total Soccer (aka Soccer
Centers). The board has decided that
our primary preferred partner will continue to be Dutch Total Soccer as we
believe that they have demonstrated the highest level commitment to the club
and to our teams in aligning with our intention to provide consistent full year
coaches. Team’s that are currently
approved to work with another trainer will be able to continue to do so. Any training organization wishing to work with
an HSC team must be pre-approved by the Board to ensure the quality of training
and safety of the HSC players. Those teams who select Dutch Total Soccer, our
preferred training organizations, will see the training and coaching to be
entirely included in the club registration fee (parameters noted below). During 2011-2012, the other approved training
partners are Spartac International, Lee Nichols, and Wayne Price.
As the Board considered how to provide the best player
development program for the upcoming 2012-2013 seasonal year, numerous program
designs were considered. Based upon the historical
experience with training organizations, the Board has chosen to officially continue
partnering with DTS. In doing so, the
Board also voted to retain the number of professional training sessions to
twice a week for the fall 2012 and spring 2013 seasons as well as 20 local
league games. Approval was made to continue
providing professional game day coaching for 10 games in the fall 2012 and 10
games in the spring 2013 seasons for all boys & girls U-8 to U-19 teams. Several current HSC High School teams already
use such training & coaching programs and are expected to continue to do so
with the club’s support and appropriate reimbursement. New small sided teams will also have the same
professional training/coaching structure in the fall 2012 season. Professional coaching provides a level
of soccer knowledge and expertise which parent coaches
simply cannot provide, and more effectively facilitates the best short and long
term player development.
The club fees will provide the structure for HSC teams to
utilize paid full time professional trainers/coaches for 3 sessions per week in
the fall as well as 3 sessions in the spring.
Historically, HSC has required parent coach participation to
maintain a balance to the professional training organizations. Properly certified and HSC approved parent
coaches/managers will continue to be utilized to manage the teams and assist in
training sessions and in games as requested by the professional trainer/coach.
To clarify, the role of each individual is as follows:
Professional Trainer –
To develop the players and team on the field through practices and in scheduled
league games. Paid professional
trainer/coach is responsible for all coaching decisions during regular season
games. The trainer/coach is in charge
from the time they walk on the field until they walk off the field.
Certified Parent Manager/Coach – Responsible for leading the team including parent
interactions as well as administrative activities (scheduling, finances,
resolving potential conflicts between families and trainers, etc.) The coach is responsible for coordinating and
providing direction until the trainer is on the field.
We continue striving to achieve a higher level of
player/team development by having a professional and a consistent voice
directing the “on field” activities. As
parent manager/coaches, we appreciate the level of commitment and value what we
all bring to both the team & club development. It is not our intention to eliminate the role
of the parent coach; but, to refine the line between the parent manager/coach
and the professional trainer/coach.
Together the parent manager/coach and the Board will continuously
monitor the professional trainer/coach to assure that the paid trainer meets
the Board’s expectations.
In order to
make the financial transition a little easier, the HSC Registration Fees must
be paid before September 1st and can be payable in 3 installments as
long as a credit card is used: June 15th
(33%), July 15th (33%) and August 15th (33%). This will not require any additional effort
on your part as the payments will be automatic once you register. 1 full payment by check (upon selection) is
still available for those who want the headache over with.
Please spread
the word to everyone about our partnership with Dutch Total Soccer which complements
our training & coaching program. See
you & your friends at tryouts!

HSC Board of Directors,
