Rivals Adams, Stoney Creek play to a draw
ROCHESTER HILLS — Both teams played hard, found the back of the net, had several near-misses and had a nice size crowd of supporters cheering them on.

Adams Soccer Rocks! So taking all that into account, there probably wasn’t a more fitting result for Rochester Adams and Stoney Creek to have than finishing with a 1-1 tie in Tuesday’s boys soccer matchup of intra-city rivals.

It was also the season opener for both, so getting to open the 2009 campaign against each other probably added to the incentive in practice to prepare hard for the upcoming season.

“I like it,” first-year Adams head coach Josh Hickey said. “You start with a good team like that, you come out strong and you know you’re not going to play a team you’re just going to handle. You know they’re going to give you a fight.”

Of the two, Adams might have felt the best about coming away with a draw.

After scoreless first half, Stoney Creek took a 1-0 lead with 33:54 left in the game on a goal by senior Jordan Tyler, who took a pass from junior Colin Wilden, dribbled amongst a group of defenders and fired a shot into the goal from roughly 20 yards out.

Tyler can play any position on the field and played the first half at midfield, but Stoney Creek head coach Phil Moore felt the start of the second half was a good time to move Tyler up front.

“It was a tactical decision,” Moore said. “We felt like out of anybody on our squad, Jordan could beat their central defender, who was cleaning up everything.”

Ironically, seconds before the goal, Tyler was imploring his teammates to serve the ball up top to him, and Wilden obliged.

Following the goal, Tyler moved back to the midfield to help Stoney Creek preserve the lead, something the Cougars did until there was 9:52 left in the game.

Off Alex Czirmer’s free kick from 40 yards out, Adams tied the game when senior James Davis recovered the loose ball among a scrum of bodies in the box and fired the ball into the net to tie the game at 1-1.

Up to that point, Adams had numerous chances to score off of scrums in the box, thanks to the bullet throw-ins of Jordan Littleson, but the Highlanders couldn’t get quite get off a shot on any of those occasions.

Finally, Davis was able to get some room and cash in.

“We’ve just got to get more aggressive in that box,” Hickey said. “A lot of those are all aggression. You’ve got to want it more. Opportunities will come.”

Even though the two teams are in the same division of the Oakland Activities Association, Tuesday’s contest was a non-league game.

With the OAA going to just two divisions, each team only has one league game with each opponent. The designated league game between the Cougars and Highlanders is slated for Sept. 29 at Stoney Creek, but Tuesday’s game was added so the rivals could have the opportunity to play twice this season.

“We had the option to not play Adams twice, but that was one team I wanted to play twice,” Moore said.

Highlanders Blaze Their Own Trail Against Ann Arbor

ADAMS 4 - PIONEER 1

The Adams soccer team traveled to Ann Arbor Thursday night, and made the trip worth it by defeating Pioneer H.S. 4-1.

The Highlanders took control of the game midway through the first half on a goal by Tom Carrio following a long run down the left touchline and centering pass by Dylan Knott. Adams tallied a second goal several minutes later when Sam Suchta buried a shot off a feed from George Patsarikas.

Adams continued to control play in the second half, and added an insurance goal when Suchta sent a cross into the box that Morley Burns ran onto and put into the back of the net.

The final Highlander tally, truly a thing of beauty. started with a Jordan Littleson throw-in 18 yards up the touchline. As they have been all season, Jordan's missel of a throw arrived to the front of goal on a rope where a determined Cameron Casey fighting through the crowd willed himself to get on the end of it and made no mistake as he drove it home with conviction on an outstanding 1-timer header. Outstanding! And sass what the papers say. We're not going to allow a hoopy referee who doesn't realize there is no such thing as offside from a throw-in erase that effort. 3-1 is what the papers will say. 4-1 was the score.

Kevin Soisson and the back four stood HUGE during Pioneer's last ditch efforts to close the gap. Coach Josh said it was like "train the keeper" and could not have been more proud of the effort. Justin, Joey, Alex, Jordan, James... what a great job. And Kevin - you are the man... a whirling dervish... the tazmanian devil. As Josh was telling me all about it, I was very sorry I couldn't be there to see it. Kevin earns his first win in goal, posting 11 saves for the game.

Adams now stand at 1-0-1 on the young season.

GREAT JOB BOYS!

Yellow Straightjacket

Adam - 0    Avondale – 1

The Adams Highlanders scoring woes, and losing skid, continued on Tuesday in a 1-0 loss to division foe Avondale. Yellowjackets standout Kayla Mannino scored from inside the six-yard box in the first half for the only goal her team would need on the evening. Andrea Meloff, Jackie Dospil and Angela Gerback, among others, had scoring chances throughout the game, but could not find the back of the net. Adams falls to 3-3 on the season and 0-1 in OAA play.

Adams falls in final minutes to Athens

Adams 1 - Athens 2

Troy Athens perserveres against Rochester Adams

Red Hawks score late goal to move into sole possession of first in OAA Red

by KEITH DUNLAP of The Oakland Press

TROY — If you thought players, parents and other supporters of the Troy Athens girls soccer team cringed at the sight of wet and windy conditions on Thursday, just imagine how Athens head coach Tim Storch felt.

“When the weather has been (bad), we’ve been (bad),” Storch said. “It’s frustrating.”

Whether it was the conditions or a natural letdown, Athens certainly wasn’t as sharp against Rochester Adams as it was on Monday, when the Red Hawks played their best game of the season and handed No. 2-ranked Rochester its first loss of the season, 2-0.

However, neither the weather or not being at its best were enough to cost Athens a win.

Senior Jackie Short scored off a throw-in from junior Jordan Penz with 2:23 left in the game to give Athens a 2-1 victory over Adams in an Oakland Activities Association Red Division contest.

“I’m glad we persevered,” Storch said. “That’s the word of the day. We persevered.”

With the win, Athens (9-1-2, 4-0-1) moved into sole possession of first place in the OAA Red with 13 points following Troy’s win over Auburn Hills Avondale and gained a small measure of payback against the Highlanders.

“Although we won the league last year, they beat us and tied us,” Storch said. “That’s one team we didn’t have a whole lot of success against last year. I have a great deal of respect for that program and team.”

Adams (3-4, 1-2) is probably out of the league title hunt now, but that doesn’t mean first-year head coach Aaron Donahey was upset with his team against Athens.

“I’m real proud of my team today,” Donahey said. “I thought they played a great game. They really possessed it and moved off the ball well. We took a loss, but I told them they had nothing to hold their heads down about. This was the best game we played.”

Taking over for longtime head coach Juan Delgado before the start of the season, Donahey and his team for the most part have spent the first half of the season trying to get acclimated with one another.

However, the Highlanders are getting more comfortable as the season progresses, and when injured players Merlin Beckwith and Brittany Buckler return in a couple of weeks, Adams should be a dangerous team as the playoffs approach.

“We’ve kind of had some bumps along the road,” Donahey said. “I’m a new coach. They’re getting to know me and I’m getting to know them. Today was the first time where I felt the rhythm of the game a little bit. The girls really picked up their pace and worked hard.”

Athens opened the scoring with 13:30 left in the first half on a goal that was set up by a terrific free kick from sophomore Olivia Brannon.

From about 45 yards out, Brannon launched a rocket of a ball that ended up clanking off of the crossbar and rolling all the way across the goal line to the far post.Senior Megan Swiderski then tapped a pass in front of the net to senior Tiffany Bell, who shot the ball into the open net to give Athens a 1-0 lead.

Adams gained some momentum late in the first half when Keely Chandler tied the game at 1-1 with 1:59 remaining in the first. The goal was set up beautifully by Angela Gerback, who flicked the ball with the back of her head towards the Athens box to Chandler, who went in all alone on goal and buried the chance to tie the game.

Each team had its share of chances in the second half, but only Athens cashed in.Taking a throw from roughly 25 yards out, Penz put the ball into the box, where it alluded a slew of bodies and found its way onto the foot of Short, who rifled a shot into the top half of the goal to give Athens a 2-1 lead. It was Short’s ninth goal of the season.

The Red Hawks hung on from there and are now officially the team others are aiming for in the OAA Red.“We were able to kind of sneak a victory away,” Storch said.

Springer's late goal lifts Adams past Norseman

Adams 2 - Grosse Pointe North 1

By MICHAEL WALLWORK

Special to The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER HILLS — Andrea Meloff banged a shot off the cross bar, and Ashley Springer found the loose ball and tucked it into the Grosse Pointe North net with 12:18 to play to give the Rochester Adams Highlanders a 2-1 win in girls soccer action on Saturday.

Springer's goal was in many ways a fitting cap to a scrambling second half.

Neither coach was intending to play such a style, but as Grosse Pointe North coach Jen Nadeau pointed out after the game,

“When you have two fast teams and the ball hits the ground running so do you.”

Indeed, both teams did.

Offensive players were closed down quickly, often by two, three, or even four defenders as neither team was able to consistently translate offensive pressure into shots on goal. Adams coach Aaron Donaghy also felt that the weather played a part.

“The wind made controlling the ball tough,” he said.

Both teams swarmed to the ball on a regular basis resulting in a lot of crowded play along the sidelines. Passes played up in the air were hard to target correctly meaning that when a player tried to pass high out of one crowd, the result often ended up being another crowd as the ball blew off target or hung up long enough for multiple players to converge on it.

The first half was a back and forth affair with the teams taking turns putting on the pressure but unable to find the net until only eight minutes left in the first half when Adams was finally able to open the scoring. Angela Gerback ran onto a long free kick taken by Sarah Bachleda and tapped it in from just a few feet in front of the Norsmen net to give Adams a 1-0 lead which they would take into halftime.

The second half started off looking much like the first half with the teams trading opportunities. But it wouldn't be long before the Norsmen were able to capitalize on one of theirs when Olivia Stander hit a streaking Sarah Hilu with a long crossing pass, and Hilu made no mistake with it as she one timed the ball into the far side of the net to tie the score at 1-1. But that would be it for Grosse Pointe North as Brittany Campbell, Maddy Christensen, and the rest of the Highlander defense would shut down the Norsmen the rest of the way, paving the way for their attacking teammates to mount consistent pressure during the remainder of the game, which culminated in Springer's goal.

After the game, both coaches admitted to being focused on preparing for district play at this stage of the season. Norsmen coach Nadeau commented that she had a brand new team this year and she saw “some good things happening and some bad things happening but we're working on it” with an eye toward being ready to compete at districts. Nadeau also singled out Sarah Hilu and Amanda Gay as particular bright spots for her club this afternoon.

On the other sideline, Coach Donaghy was real happy with his team.

“We attacked really well and possessed the ball well,” he said. Overall, the Highlanders' coach feels his team is getting better every week, noting also that “each game we add another piece” in their effort to improve.

The win evened the Highlanders' record at 4-4 overall, while the loss dropped Grosse Pointe North to 3-4-3. Both teams return to action on Monday when the Norsmen travel to Utica Eisenwower while Adams plays host to the Lake Orion Dragons.

Adams Ties Dragons in Final Minutes

Adams 1 - Lake Orion 1

The Highlanders hard work and perseverance paid off Monday evening, resulting in a 1-1 tie with the unbeaten Lake Orion Dragons.

Lake Orion scored in the first half, and carried much of the play throughout the game. In the 77th minute, continued pressure by the Highlanders resulted in a long service by Keely Chandler to the six-yard box that was buried in the net by Brittany Buckler. Buckler was making her first appearance of the year for Adams and had just entered the game minutes earlier.

Adams improve to 5-4-1 on the season. Lake Orion stand at 10-0-3.

Friday, May 8
Highlanders Fall to Lahser

Adams 0 - Lahser 1

Two balls hit the goalpost in Thursday's game -- one went in, and one did not. Lahser was the benefactor of the former, and that was the story of the evening for Adams.

Despite having numerous chances and dominating possession for most of the game, the Highlanders could not find the back of the net and fell to the Lahser Knights, 1-0.

Adams opened the game with two scoring opportunities by Keely Chandler and Angela Gerback that were thwarted by the Lahser goalkeeper. The score remained tied at zero until midway through the second half, when Lahser bent one in off the post to take a 1-0 lead. Andrea Meloff nearly equalized things ten minutes later when her shot hit the post but came back into the field of play where it was cleared by Lahser.

Adams returns to action Saturday vs. Troy.

Rivals Adams, Rochester play to a draw

Adams 1 - Rochester 1

By BRITTANY OCHTINSKY Special to The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER HILLS — Rochester’s girls soccer team is continually setting and adjusting its goals throughout the season.

After Troy Athens wrapped up the Oakland Activities Association Red Division title last week, the Falcons had to refocus on districts and playing well at the right time of the season.

The Falcons played to a 1-1 tie against Rochester Adams Tuesday night, but coach Todd Heugh was more satisfied with the way his team played than he was with the outcome of the game.

“This was the first time in about a week and a half that we played with high energy,” Heugh said. “We fought for the loose balls and scrapped and, if not for a couple good saves by their goalkeeper, we might have had a go-ahead goal.”

The Falcons were playing without key forward Amanda Anton, who went down early in the first half. Anton collided with a Highlander and Heugh speculates she injured her knee. For precautionary reasons, she did not play the rest of the game.

It was Anton who was the difference maker in the first meeting between the two teams earlier in the season, scoring the lone goal in Rochester’s 1-0 win.

But Heugh relied on senior Keriann Ford, who has been playing primarily on defense as of late, to step up in Anton’s absence.

“Keriann has tremendous knowledge for soccer and she can play anywhere, and we’ve used her just about anywhere,” Heugh said.

Along with Riayane Williams, Ford was responsible for holding the ball in the midfield to allow Lauren Fant and Haley Burtraw to create pressure up front.

Fant struck early in the game, scoring just three minutes into the first half, on a pass from Burtraw.

The first 15 minutes of the game — along with the last 15 minutes of the game — were the parts of the game Adams’ coach Aaron Donaghy would rather forget.

After a slow start by the Highlanders, they settled the ball down and were able to control the ball better in the midfield.

“When you get scored on in the first few minutes, you always wonder how your team is going to react,” Donaghy said. “After that, I think we still played a little too fast, but when we were able to settle down and control the ball, we were dangerous.”

Adams evened the score with six minutes left to play in the first half, on a goal by Keely Chandler. Rochester goalkeeper Laura Ivezaj came out to challenge Angela Gerback, who slid the ball across the front of the net to a wide-open Chandler on the far side.

Both teams had opportunities in the second half, as Adams’ goalkeeper Kristine Gasparovic had to make a few big saves on the Falcons, and Adams’ Andrea Meloff hammered a shot that bounced off the cross bar, but neither were able to capitalize.

Although the Highlanders have struggled to score goals this season, averaging about a goal a game, Donaghy is watching his team continue to progress with each passing week.

“We’ve really struggled, but we’re learning not to let a goal get us down,” he said. “We’re not a tremendously fast team, so we have to work on possession of the ball. This game we had a few more shots than the last game, where we had a few more than the game before that.”

Friday, May 15
Churchill Edges Highlanders

Adams 2 - Churchill 3

Adams ventured outside of conference play on a rare Friday night game, taking on the ranked Livonia Churchill Chargers. Churchill started the scoring, taking an early 1-0 lead. Adams tied it up late in the second half on a goal by Keely Chandler, which came after the Churchill keeper deflected a blast by Andrea Meloff.

The teams went toe-to-toe in the second half until Churchill opened things up a little with a 3-1 lead. However, with under 5 minutes left in the game, Chandler scored her second goal of the game by punching in a lose ball in the goal box. The Highlanders could not get an equalizer, however, and fall to Churchill for the second consecutive year.

Highlanders gain momentum before districts

Adams 4 - Notre Dame Prep 0

by JEFF KANAN Special to The Oakland Press

ROCHESTER — Rochester Adams found its scoring edge Tuesday and used two early goals to storm past Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, 4-0, in a tune-up game as each team prepared for districts.

Andrea Meloff tucked a penalty kick in the bottom-right corner of the net to put the Highlanders on the board just eight minutes in, and Adams followed it up with a goal by Keely Chandler at the 24:34 mark to put the Irish, who rested several starters to get healthy before playoffs, in a 2-0 hole.

“The 2-0 lead was huge for us,” Adams coach Aaron Donaghy said. “It allowed us to try some things and get ready for districts. We could experiment with players at different positions. Some of our injured players got some minutes to get their touch back.”

Adams controlled much of the play early on an and was lethal around the net, pressuring Notre Dame Prep’s goalkeepers and managing to get good looks around the goal.

In addition to the two early goals, the Highlanders clanked a few crossbars during the game and were sparked by the play of Meloff, whose craftiness around the net paid huge dividends.

She added a late goal by breaking into the open field and making a nifty move to juke the Irish goaltender before tapping the ball in the net.

“This is one of her strongest games,” Donaghy said. “When she gets the ball in deep, she’s very dangerous.”

Meloff’s first goal came on a penalty shot about eight minutes in as she drove to the net and was rewarded for her efforts by drawing a penalty. She converted on the subsequent kick and Adams got the early edge.

The Highlanders continued to pressure. Keely Chandler received a nice feed from a teammate and scored to give her team a 2-0 lead before the halfway point of the first period.

The third tally was recorded early in the second, when Chandler lasered home her second of the game.

Donaghy said his team is starting to peak at the right time, as the playoffs near.

“I think we’re playing some of our best soccer,” Donaghy said. “The girls are starting to click. I’m a new coach with a new team, so I think it’s taken some time for us to gel as a unit. Today the pieces we’ve been trying to put in place all season seemed to come together.”

The Highlanders (6-6-4) defeated Royal Oak Monday night and open the playoffs Tuesday against Troy.

“They’re a really good team, so they’ll be a good challenge for us,” Donaghy said of Troy.

The Irish (13-5-1) rested several starters after a competitive contest with one of the county’s top teams, the Birmingham Marian Mustangs, who defeated the Irish by a goal.

Emily Anderson and Desiree Cpadenou split time in net, as Notre Dame Prep gets ready for districts.

“We played well and we were as good as Marian that day, but they’re the favorites to win Division 2, so based on that fact that we played well on that day and if everyone stays fit, we have a chance to go all the way,” Irish coach Marc Frankland said.

Notre Dame Prep got its best chance when Kacie Steinbrecher got a good look early in the first half, but was denied by Adams goalie Kristine Gasperovic.

“We’ve really progressed well this season,” Frankland said. “We’ve gotten better and better and better as we’ve gone on in the Catholic League. The good thing about the Catholic League is that every game is a good game.”

Last Minute Goal Spoils Adams Opener
Adams 1 – Stoney Creek 2

Adams Freshman team opened their season at home hosting cross-town rival Stoney Creek. They came out strong moving the ball well and creating a good many chances. Adams scored after a corner kick and ensuing scramble near the Stoney goal mouth. A determined Alex Webber sniffed out the chance and tucked the ball home with a very opportunistic goal, indeed.

Stoney’s equalizer came part way through the half on a counter-attack. Even so, Adams continued carry play and pressured Stoney throughout the match with excellent chances, but withstood the onslaught due primarily to the outstanding performance of Cougars’ goalkeeper Lauren Dante who finished with nine save on the day. As full time approached, the Highlanders’ short bench began to take it’s toll and fatigue became a factor. Stoney took advantage and tallied the game winner with a mere 1:35 left to play.

Despite the disappointment of the loss, it was an outstanding performance by the Highlanders and we can look ahead to the season with great enthusiasm and anticipation.

The Frosh Highlanders went on a scoring binge against an overmatched West Bloomfield squad this past Wednesday, 5/6/09, posting an easy win by the score of 7 - 0.

Emily scored her first of the season 4 minutes later, making it 2-0, and the Highlanders put the game quickly out of reach with goals from Amy, Michelle and Kelly's second marker . The lead reached 6-0 before halftime when Kasey beat the defense and found the back of the next, making the halftime score 6 - 0.

Michelle's second goal of the game closed out the scoring early in the second half, as the Highlanders took the opportunity to rotate players thourhg new positions to broaden their soccer skills at positions beyond their comfort zone.

Adams 2 – Lake Orion 1

The Adams Freshmen won their 5th in a row, and remained unbeaten in their last 7, by downing the Lake Orion Dragons 2 - 1 Friday afternopon (5.7.09) at Adams High Stadium. The game was hard fought, and was scoreless through much of the first until Lexis took a long pass from Alexandra and broke down the right side, ultimately crossing the ball to the middle of the box, where a Lake Orion defender deflected the ball into the Dragons net to give Adams a 1 - 0 lead. The goal was credited to Emily as the last player to touch the ball.

The game remained 1-0 until the 10 minute mark of the second half when the Dragons broke through to tie the game on a upper 90 shot that hit the crossbar and fell into the Highlanders net. The Highlanders reclaimed the lead 3 minutes later when Emily knocked home a free ball during a mad scramble in front of Lake Orions goal.

The flow of the game see sawed back and forth with the Adams defense standing tall and withstood furious late game pressure by Lake Orion. Rachel played an outstanding game in net, making about a half dozen difficult saves to preserve the Highlander victory.

Adams record stands at 5 - 1 - 2, with their next match being Monday, 5/11/09, away at Troy High School.

Kasey closed out the scoring in the second half, taking a clearing pass from Madison, broke behind the Troy defense and put the ball into the upper 90, giving Adams the two goal cushion.

Adams 3 – Rochester 1

The Highlander Freshman team continued its winning ways and extended their winning streak to 7 games, and unbeaten streak to 9, by grounding the Rochester Falcons 3 - 1 on Tuesday night at Rochester High on the strength of three goals directly off of corner kicks.

Adams carried the momentum of play in most of the first half, finally tallying their first goal at the 25 minute mark when Emily buried home a corner ball played by Sydney. The Falcons rallied quickly in the second half, posting the tying goal 15 seconds after the kickoff. Gradually, the Highlander Frosh asserted control of the field, and the game was consistently played in the Rochester half. Adams took the lead for good at the midpoint of the half on a head ball played by Amy, again off of Sydney's corner kick. The game was salted away for good when a third goal was scored off a corner kick, with Amy again heading Sydneys kick into the back of the Falcon net.

The win puts the Freshman Highlanders at 7 - 1 - 2 for the season. The Frosh next face Royal Oak High School on 5/13/09 at 5 PM at Adams High School.

Thursday, May 14
Only this and nothing more for the poe ravens
Adams 2 – Royal Oak 0

The Frosh continued their winning ways and extended their winning streak to 8 games (unbeaten in the last 10) on a windswept and rainy afternoon at Adams High Stadium. Sydney opened the scoring when she played a long ball towards the Royal Oak goal. The shot took the goalie by surprize and found the far corner of the net to get Adams out to a 1-0 lead midway through the first half.

Adams dominated the game positionally, playing virtually all the game in the Royal Oak half of the field, and the team peppered the Royal Oak netminder with a constant flurry of shots. Madison closed out the scoring when she followed a long clearing ball that bounced over the goalies head and Madison finished the play putting the loose ball into the wide open Royal Oak goal.

Wolves Sent Packing
Adams 5 – Clarkston 0

Tuesday, 5/19/09, found the Freshman Highlanders playing host to Clarkston at Adams High Stadium. The Frosh showed early in the Match that they were taking no prisoners tonight, and set the tone for the game with a physical style that resulted in two goals in the first 7 minutes of game (Sydney from Alexandra), and Kasey (off of Sydneys corner kick).

Adams dominated play in the early going, winning the majority of the battles for loose balls, and held an impressive positional advantage during the opening minutes of the game. Just before halftime, Abby posted her second goal in as many games this week, scoring directly off of Sydney's corner kick, moving the Highlanders out to a 3 - 0 halftime lead.

The second half opened with very aggressive play from both teams, with Clarkston struggling to match the Highlander intensity to no avail. At 13 minutes into the half, Alexandra received crossing pass from Amy on the left side. The Clarkston goalie made the initial save, but Alexandra recovered her own rebound and lobbed the ball over the goalie and last defender into the Clarkston goal, extending Adams lead to 4 - 0.

The game got a little chippy in the latter stages of the second, and culminated in the issuance of two yellow cards to Adams, but the outcome was unchanged and ended in a 5 - 0 win when Sydney put in a rebound of Amy's cross with 5 seconds left in the game to close the scoring.

With the win the Adams Freshman moved their record to 10 - 1 - 2. The shutout of Clarkston was the teams 10th of the season, and their winning streak stands at an impressive 10 games and unbeated streak reached 12.
