HASC 2012 Volunteer of the Year Bill O'Donnell
The Hicksville American Soccer Club proudly acknowledges Bill O’Donnell as the club’s Volunteer of the Year. Bill started volunteering for the club because his daughter’s intramural team needed a coach. That was about 20 years ago. He then was the travel coach for the Hicksville Liberty which he coached until they aged out at U19. There were times when Bill’s daughters weren’t even playing but he still put in countless hours coaching the team. He encouraged the best in his players and the girls enjoyed playing for him.
Due to Bill’s desire to learn more about soccer, he became a soccer referee. After becoming a certified referee he volunteered to oversee the club’s intramural referees. Bill spent many hours on Sunday afternoons watching over his young referees. He taught them the laws of the game and provided assistance in officiating a game. He also made sure that his referees were protected from overzealous coaches and parents. Under Bill’s guidance all the children were protected. As a center referee Bill took the time to explain the laws of the game, especially to the younger players. He let the players know what the various hand signals meant. He always seemed to enjoy what he was doing.
The past 7 years have shown what a true volunteer Bill is. After the Liberty was done, Bill still had the desire to coach. He started coaching the boys’ Gladiator team. Bill paid for many of their expenses out of his own pocket because he just wanted the boys to have the best soccer experience he could give them.
Bill is very passionate about fairness and giving back to the community. Although most times he has a smile on his face, if he thinks someone isn’t being treated right he will make sure his opinion is heard.
One of Bill’s best coaching moments was during intramurals when his team was losing by many goals and one of his players asked him if they were winning. Bill says that he told her if she was playing and having fun then they were winning.
The Hicksville Soccer Club has been honored to have such a person as Bill as a member for all these years.

Goal Safety Reminder
As a reminder to all HASC coaches please insure all large goals (Walker Field, Kolm Park, OCR, Giese and Burns) are anchored to the ground properly - either by sandbags or stakes. This is to be done at all times - practices, scrimmages and games. There are numerous accounts of deaths and injuries from toppled over goals - let's all be safe and diligent. If for some reason you do not have access to needed equipment please notify the club immediately.
Below are some related Goal Safety links.

Risk Management
As of May 7, 2007 all HASC Intramural and Travel Coaches are required to complete the Long Island Jr. Soccer League and Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association Risk Management process. Slide Tackling
The HASC Board and Intramural Commissioners would like to remind all coaches, parents and players that slide tackling is prohibited in the Intramural level. As of the May 7, 2007 Board Meeting the club instituted a new ruling where all coaches and players would be warned prior to each game that child tackling is prohibited and if a child slide tackles the referee will remove the child from the game. This is to protect the children from getting hurt. If anyone has any questions or comments please contact your group Commissioner or any one of the HASC Board Members.
