Monday, March 12 'Canes open with pre-season W's Huntingtown rolled out the bats and balls this weekend as the defending regional champs opened the 2007 pre-season with a doubleheader vs. Broadneck and Long Reach high schools. The 'Canes came away with two victories, 4-1 against Broadneck and 9-1 against Long Reach. Huntingtown pitchers looked sharp in brief outings as six pitchers took the mound and allowed only one earned run over fourteen innings of work. Senior Nick Hardy opened game one with three innings of solid work, scattering four hits while allowing one run and walking none. Doug Burdsall followed and was equally solid, featuring his new 'barbeque ball' to keep Long Reach off balance. Cory Page came on to pitch the final inning to close the game out. DJ Mascetti opened game two. He featured a nasty,late-breaking change that was giving the Long Reach batters very little opportunity. He cruised through three innings of work yielding an unearned run and walking none. Dustin Herbert followed from the left side and was also in command of the Long Reach offense. He had nice pop on his fastball and moved the ball in and out. Junior Steve McDonald came on and pitched a shut-out seventh inning to put the second 'Canes win in the book. Offensively, the 'Canes were paced by leadoff hitter David Bowen, who had consistently good at-bats, seeing alot of different pitches and stroking line drives all over the yard, including a one-hop double off the wall in center. Matt Beck had a two-out double to drive in a key run. Cory Page and Nick Hardy kept rallies alive with hits. Dustin Herbert and Joey Kavanagh were both 2 for 4 with a homerun, Herbert having 4 RBI and Kavanagh 3. The defense was solid overall, with John McIntosh contributing a diving catch in center. Wednesday, March 21 'Canes finish pre-season with W vs. Northern The 'Canes prevailed 10-8 in a ten inning scrimmage vs. the Northern Patriots yesterday. The good news is that the 'Canes came away with the win despite what can best be called an average performance. No doubt the 'Canes will return to their normal sharp level of play when the season opens March 23 at home at 4:30 PM vs. McDonough HS. The main highlight of the game was the delicious burgers cooked by Mr. White and Mr. Herbert.....other highlights included Matt White, Kevin Kady and Matt Beck all producing runs with their bats, Jimmy Lubonski with a bases-clearing double in the middle innings and Nick Hardy also contributing an RBI triple. Monday, March 26 Hurricanes 12, Rams 2 The Huntingtown Nine took the field in the season opener on March 23 and when all was said and done had earned a 12-2 victory over visiting McDonough HS. Senior lefty DJ Mascetti took the mound and in a strong 62 pitch outing limited the Rams offense to two unearned runs on four hits while walking none and striking out four. He worked five innings for the win. Mascetti induced many ground balls and, once the 'Canes offense had built a lead, was in command. Senior Doug Burdsall came on in the sixth and posted more zeroes, spotting his fastball well and showcasing his 12 to 6 breaking ball to retire the side. It turned out to be his only inning of work as the Hurricanes offense ended the game in the home sixth by extended its lead to ten runs. The 'Canes offense jumped out early. The first run of the year was scored in the first by leadoff man Dave Bowen, who would be hit twice and score twice on the day. Eleven runs later, Brian Schug's RBI ground ball in the sixth ended the game. The 'Canes had nine hits on the day but also benefitted from six Rams errors, many induced by hard smashes off Hurricanes bats. Junior C Matt Beck [1-3, 2 RBI]doubled in two runs and Casey Becraft [2-3, RBI, SB] also had a run-producing double. Joey Kavanagh was 2-4 with 3 RBI and an SB. Matt Baden [double, 3 runs scored] displayed the 'Canes characteristic heads-up baserunning and scored three times. The 'Canes other three RBIs came off the bats of Lubonski, Baden and Hardy. Next up, March 26 vs. Calvert at HHS at 4:30. Come check it out! Tuesday, March 27 'Canes Come Back Twice in 3-2 win over Cavs In a tight, well-played game by both sides, Huntingtown showed patience and toughness in an eight inning victory. The 'Canes opened with senior Nick Hardy on the mound and his hard, sinking fastball and splitter kept Calvert off the bases through the first three innings. Likewise, Calvert starter Brandon Crigger matched the scoreless performance with left-handed gas combined with a diving off-speed pitch that would ultimately yield seven strikeouts. The only hit through the first three was a double by RF Jimmy Lubonski. Calvert scored the first run in the top of the fourth when a two out double by second baseman Vincent Bowles gave them a 1-0 lead. Huntingtown came back in the bottom of the fourth when SS Matt Baden singled to left and 3B Joey Kavanagh followed with a two-run homer just left of dead center field. The excellent pitching continued and Calvert scratched out the tying run when senior Derek Richards played the game right and sent a ground ball to second with a teammate on third and less than two out. Senior Dustin Herbert came on in the sixth and continued to hang up zeroes, working around a leadoff single by Calvert senior SS Nick Bowles in the seventh. Huntingtown nearly won it in the seventh when Herbert was hit by a pitch and pinch runner Kyle Lindsay was sacrificed to second on a perfectly executed bunt by Matt White. Junior Matt Beck smacked what looked to be the game winner into the right centerfield alley only to have it snow-coned at the wall by Calvert CF Joe Bagadonuts, typical of the stellar defense turned in by both sides [McIntosh had a diving catch and many other tough plays were rountinely made by both teams]. The win finally came in the eighth when senior 2B David Bowen walked and stole second on a pickoff attempt. Matt Baden grounded to short and, with Bowen advancing on the throw to first, Calvert first baseman Tim Sisson's throw back to third got away from the bag and Bowen sped home with the winning run. On the day, Huntingtown pitchers allowed one earned run and walked only one over eight innings with Herbert getitng the win in relief. The 'Canes, now 2-0, take it on the road this Wednesday, March 28, traveling to LaPlata for a 4:30 game. Thursday, March 29 'Canes Ride Pitching, Defense to 1-0 win over LaPlata In the middle innings it looked like Nick Hardy's lined shot over the left centerfield wall would be the spark that lit the offensive fire, but it turned out to be the pitching and defense that was truly smokin'. Senior DJ Mascetti threw six inninngs of shut-out ball at the Warriors and Cory Page came on to close a 1-2-3 seventh. Both were dominant and made the lone Hurricanes run stand up. Mascetti was locating his curve and change precisely and a sharp double play up the middle ended the only LaPlata rally. Mascetti has yet to give up a run or issue a walk this season and was the winning pitcher. Cory Page had nice velocity and tight spin on his curve and again looked comfortable in earning the save. Next up on this two-game road trip, Westlake. Tip-off is 4:30 PM on Friday, March 30 on the Westlake campus. Hurricanes fans will remember this as the site of a titanic blast in 2006 by senior Frankie McRae that nearly struck the house beyond the CF wall. Start your weekend with Hurricanes baseball! Saturday, March 31 'Canes 4 and 0 after Second Consecutive Shutout Victory vs. Westlake Huntingtown defeated Westlake yesterday 5-0 as Hurricanes pitcher Dustin Herbert dominated the Wolverines with a sick two-hit performance featuring thirteen K's and one walk. Herbert had a no-hitter through six and one-third innings before allowing two hits in the seventh. The D remained tight and the offense showed signs of life posting eight hits and five runs, rising to the challenge of newly appointed Press Secretary DJ Mascetti who told the media Wednesday "when our offense gets going, we'll be untouchable". Matt Baden continued his consistent work at the plate running his hit streak to four games [two vs Westlake]. Casey Becraft is swinging a hot bat and had an RBI double to increase the H'town lead late in the game. The 'Canes now return home after a two-game road swing through Charles County where they did not allow a run in fourteen innings. In fact, over the three games this week, Huntingtown allowed only one earned run in twenty-two innings of work. Tuesday, April 3 H'town defeats L'town, 10-2 Huntingtown ran its 2007 record to 5-0 and senior lefty DJ Mascetti upped his record to 3-0 as Huntingtown defeated Leonardtown 10-2 in an all-around effort with many contributors. Leonardtown scratched a first inning run off Mascetti, his first allowed this year, but the Raiders lead was short-lived as the 'Canes came back with two in the bottom half of the inning. A lead-off single by 2B Dave Bowen and a walk to Casey BEcraft set the table for Matt Baden who had his first of three hits on the day to tie the game. Senior Joey Kavanagh took a two strike pitch to the right side to plate BEcraft for the lead. After an unearned run tied the game at two, it was Baden and Kavanagh again who put the 'Canes back in front in the third inning, as Baden singled and Kavanagh drove a breaking ball over the CF wall for a 4-2 lead. Mascetti held the Raiders down through five and Matt Beck took over on offense with a triple and double in consecutive at bats to break it open. Johnny Mac also had a key sac fly to right while the contest was still in doubt. Cory Page came in smoking from the bullpen to pitch the sixth and seventh, striking out the side in the seventh, the final strike on a nasty hammer. The 'Canes defense was also on display with sparkling 6-4-3 and 4-6-3 double plays and McIntosh doing his diving-forward catch thing again. Next up for the 'Canes is a Wednesday [April 4] road game at Northeast under the lights. This game has a special 6 PM start time. Check the site later for directions. Don't forget the Easter Tournament on Saturday, April 7. Game One is at HHS at 10 AM. Game Two is at Northern and the start time of Game Two depends on how we do in Game One. Tuesday, April 10 'Canes 11, Northeast 4 Powered by a fifteen hit attack, Huntingtown defeated Northeast 11-4. Cory Page led the way with a grand slam and another hit to produce six of the Hurricanes runs. Dustin Herbert added a three-run shot and Dave Bowen, who was 3-for-3 on the day, had the other 2 RBIs. Ten Hurricanes had at least one hit. Senior Nick Hardy, who contributed two hits at the plate, got the start and went five innings allowing two earned runs and was the winning pitcher. Dustin Herbert pitched the sixth and Page pitched the last inning, striking out the side to cap off a pretty good day's work. Tuesday, April 10 Huntingtown Easter Tourney Champs! The Hurricanes won the snow-delayed 2007 Easter Tournament with 4-2 and 7-3 victories over the Patuxent Panthers [0-2]and Calvert Cavaliers [1-1]. Game One started in cold and windy conditions but the 'Canes jumped out to the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Senior Jimmy Lubonski walked and advanced to third on a double by fellow senior Joey Kavanagh and both scored on senior Cory Page's [1-2, 2 RBI] double to right. That looked to be enough as Dustin Herbert held the Panthers down over five innings of work, allowing no runs while striking out seven. Herbert allowed two hits and issued three free passes, but C Kevin Kady shut down the Panthers running game early, hosing a would be base-stealer at second with a perfect throw. They didn't test him again. Kady was also active on the offensive side with a hit, walk and stolen base. Sophomore Brian Lusby, recently called up to the big club from triple-A, came on to work the sixth. He pitched well, locating his pitches and keeping the ball down, but some defensive ugliness by the 'Canes allowed Patuxent to even the score at two. Junior Brian Schug [1-1,R] singled with one out in the top of the seventh and advanced to second on a balk by the Patuxent pitcher. Joey Kavanagh [2-3, 2R, RBI] then cracked a double into the LF corner, giving H'town the lead again. Senior John McIntosh [1-1, RBI] followed Kavanagh with an RBI single, providing an insurance run and a 4-2 lead. Nick Hardy worked the seventh and threw six pitches to earn the save. 2B Dave Bowen and SS Brian Schug turned a nice 4-6-3 DP to end it. Huntingtown was the home nine for Game Two and the sun was shining as it began [it wasn't when it was over]. Senior Cory Page took the hill in his first start of the year after several excellent relief appearances in the closer role. He battled through an early inning jam and started to mix in his breaking ball going four strong innings. He allowed three runs [two earned], scattering four hits and two walks while K-ing four Cavaliers. Page was the winning pitcher on the day. Junior Steve McDonald pitched the fifth and sixth allowing two base runners and was never threatened. Senior lefty DJ Mascetti set Calvert down in order in the seventh to secure the victory for the 'Canes. Offensively, C Matt Beck [1-2, 3 RBI] had key at bats in game two, plating one run with a sac fly and two more on a long double to right center. OF Matt White was 1-2 with a run scored; 1B Dustin Herbert had two hits and an RBI. Senior Nick Hardy reached base three different ways [error, walk, hit by pitch] and scored all three times. The 'Canes now move on to Great Mills on Wednesday, April 11 at 4:30 PM. Please note this game is at Great Mills, not HHS, as previously shown on the schedule. The JV is home, varsity is away. Tuesday, April 10 Hurricanes Storm into Washington Post Top Ten Huntingtown cracked High School Baseball's Top Ten as reported in today's late Post. The 8-0 Hurricanes broke in at #10 and there is a short accompanying article discussing the 'Canes depth [see link]. Fortunately for them, none of the teams above Huntingtown have the 'Canes on their schedule! Tuesday, April 10 Hurricanes Storm into Washington Post Top Ten The 8-0 'Canes cracked Baseball's Top Ten in today's late Post. Huntingtown broke in at #10 and there is an accompanying article citing the Hurricanes' depth [click on title]. Too bad none of the teams above the 'Canes are on the schedule! Thursday, April 12 Deuces Wild as 'Canes top Hornets 12-1 Huntingtown surged to 9-0 with a 12-1 victory in near arctic temperatures Wednesday night. Dave Bowen had 2 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI to lead the attack but deuces were wild throughout the boxscore. Casey BEcraft had 2 hits and 2 RBI, Nick Hardy had 2 hits, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, Joey Kavanagh walked twice and had two runs scored, Jimmy Lubonski scored twice and Matt Beck walked twice. Threes were wild for Dustin Herbert as he had three RBI on a triple. Overall, Huntingtown turned ten hits and seven walks into 12 runs. DJ Mascetti went five innings for a complete game victory, using only 60 pitches to record fifteen outs. He allowed five baserunners and one earned run while fanning five for his fourth win. Next up, the Westlake Wolverines on Friday, April 13 at 4:30 PM at HHS. Saturday, April 14 "Canes Surge to 10-0; Defeat Westlake 11-0 In a game played in temperatures actually resembling baseball weather, Huntingtown posted a five inning victory vs. Charles County's Westlake Wolverines. After squelching a mild rally in the top of the first with a smooth 2-1-5 pickoff, the 'Canes jumped ahead of Westlake as leadoff man David Bowen singled and OF CASEY BECRAFT followed with a lined shot over the right-centerfield wall for a 2-0 lead. It was all senior P Nick Hardy would need as he had the hard stuff and appeared to break out a new off-speed pitch that came to the plate like a bad rollercoaster ride. Hardy would allow only four hits and managed to complete the game using just 58 pitches. The 'Canes defense was also on display behind Hardy as the Huntingtown Nine played error-free ball. 2B Dave Bowen [backhand pick up the middle] and 3B Joey Kavanagh [bunt in front of plate] were notable. But the real story of the day was the Hurricanes' bats. 'Canes hitters showed patience at the plate, waited on the ball well and hit line drives to all fields. OF Becraft would later triple, giving him a two hit day. Other hot hitters turning in two hit performances were Bowen, Kavanagh and Baden. Next up, the 'Canes will face LaPlata at the friendly confines of Huntingotwn Field on Monday April 16, at 4:30 PM. In their earlier meeting Huntingtown won 1-0. Come out at check out the rematch which should be an excellent contest. Wednesday, April 18 'Canes D leads way, 8-5 vs. Leonardtown Huntingtown notched their 11th win tonite behind a strong defensive performance against a game Leonardtown team. Both teams swung the bats well and the combination of Mascetti [win], Page and Hardy [save] got the job done on the mound. The difference was the Huntingtown D which saved runs throughout the day, particularly on strong relays from the OF to cutoff men. Likewise, when L'town OFs missed their cutoffs, H'town runners took advantage. It was a big factor in a three-run game. Details tomorrow. Special Note: Those of you who read the Post [4/18 edition] will note that #1 ranked Madison HS has allowed just 22 runs in 10 games. That's great pitching and defense....by the way, your own Huntingtown Hurricanes have allowed 20 runs [12 earned] in eleven games...not that we're keeping track or anything [credit to Mr. Mascetti for pointing this out]. Thursday, April 19 Recap of Leonardtown Win The 'Canes ability to execute fundamental plays was the difference in the 8-5 victory. Huntingtown shut down a Raiders rally when, with a man on second, Leonardtown singled and CF John McIntosh charged the ball and fired to cutoff man Dustin Herbert who held the runner at third. Nick Hardy at 3B alertly fired to second to catch the batter trying to advance to second on the cutoff throw. Similarly, when L'town missed cutoffs, 'Canes runners took extra bases which led to the margin of victory. P DJ Mascetti also knocked down two line drives [one with his glove and one with his....hindquarters] which were scooped up by SS Matt Baden and 2B Dave Bowen for 1-6-3 and 1-4-3 putouts. Offensively, five 'Canes had two or more hits apiece--Baden, Bowen, Becraft [2 doubles], Hardy [double off the wall] and Kavanagh [3-R HR]. McIntosh reached base four times with a hit a three bases on balls. Thursday, April 19 'Canes notch 12th win, defeat LaPlata 10-0 Matt White, Kevin Kady, Jesse Ried and Spencer Wolfe all had key roles in the 6-inning win. OF Matt White had a two-out RBI single, OF Jesse Reid had a great at-bat, finally working a walk for an RBI, C Kevin Kady lined a shot into RF and Wolfe plated the last two runs with a clean single up the middle. Dustin Herbert went the route for the complete game victory, scattering four hits and mixing his off speed stuff and fastball well. In a game that was closer than the final score, Herbert calmly worked out of a two-on, no-out situation by striking out two and inducing a fly ball to end the innng. 'Canes pitchers have now allowed only 20 runs [12 earned, yikes!] in twelve games. The 'Canes D was on display again and was highlighted by SS Matt Baden's Derek Jeter imitation, bare-handing a slow roller behind the mound and firing to 1B Cory Page who made a nice stretch to record the out. The combination of great pitching and D has resulted in a team ERA of 1.06. No Huntingtown pitcher, reliever or starter, has an ERA of over 2.5. Huntingtown had eight hits on the day and also was issued thirteen free passes by LaPlata pitchers [four to Kavanagh, three to Hardy]. With all the walks, no single 'Canes player had more than one hit with Beck, Bowen, Becraft, Herbert and Lubonski rounding out the eight. Next up, the Hurricanes face Great Mills, Friday, April 20 at 4:30 PM at HHS, in game one of a fantastic high school/MLB doubleheader. 'Canes get 13th Win, 13-4 Huntingtown defeated Great Mills 13-4 on Friday to move their record to 13-0. The offense was paced by senior OF Casey Becraft's three hits, three runs scored and three RBI. 2B Dave Bowen had a double and triple and also scored three times, OF Matt White tripled and scored, Dustin Herbert had three RBIs, Matt Baden had 2 RBI and Jimmy Lubonski's lined lead-off single to left sparked the five-run rally in the sixth that put this one out of reach. The team batting average now sits at .344. Nick Hardy took the mound under clear blue skies and scattered six hits and four runs while pitching with the lead. He left on the plus side of an 8-4 score and was the winning pitcher. Cory Page pitched the sixth and seventh to secure the win. Senior 3B Joey Kavanagh's streak of reaching base safely ended at twelve consecutive plate appearances when he lined out to right in the second inning. He was 6-6 with a HBP and five straight walks between outs. Defensively, the 'Canes played error-free ball and C Kevin Kady picked a runner off first with a quick throw behind an overly agressive Hornets runner. Please note the game Monday, April 23 vs. McDonough HS is at McDonough, not HHS. Game time remains 4:30 PM. Tuesday, April 24 Bats lead Big Comeback; 'Canes defeat Rams for 14th Win A big blast in the top of the sixth off the bat of Brian Schug completed Huntingtown's furious comeback from a 6-1 deficit. The final score was 18-6. Schug's three-run homer capped a rally over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings in which many 'Canes played a role. Dustin Herbert was 3-3 with 2 RBI, Matt Baden had two hits and drove in four. Casey Becraft had two hits and drove in two. Lead-off man Dave Bowen scored three times [three bases on balls and a hit] and CF John McIntosh scored twice and also had two hits. Nine different 'Canes had hits on the day. After an uncharacteristic rocky start, LHP DJ Mascetti settled in and held the Rams scoreless in the second and third while the 'Canes began to mount their comeback. The relief corps was excellent and the Rams did not score again vs. Cory Page [2 innings], who got the win, and junior Steve McDonald who pitched a strong sixth to seal the victory. The Hurricanes play the Northern Patriots this Wednesday at 4:30 PM at Northern HS. Thursday, April 26 Northern defeats Huntingtown 9-3 Northern HS stopped the 'Canes winning streak at fourteen with a well-played 9-3 victory. Senior righthanders started for both teams, Cory Page for the visiting 'Canes and Tim Hull for the home Patriots. Both pitchers had good command and velocity, steadily in the high 80's and low 90's and both throwing their breaking balls for strikes. What set up as a tight pitching duel did not turn out that way as Northern had the timely hits and was sharper defensively in earning the 9-3 win. The 'Canes had seven hits on the day and Dave Bowen continued to swing a hot bat with a double, triple and RBI in four at bats. No other Hurricanes player had more than one hit and Jimmy Lubonski had the only other extra base hit, a triple in the sixth inning. Sophomore Brian Lusby did a nice job out of the bullpen, pitching a scoreless sixth for Huntingtown. The Hurricanes return home from their two-game road trip to face Lackey HS on Friday, April 27 at 4:30 PM. It's prom weekend and what better way to start it than with Hurricanes baseball? Tuesday, May 1 Offensive Fireworks Lead Huntingtown over Patuxent, 11-0 The Huntingtown offense was explosive last night as 'Canes batters pounded out ten hits, seven for extra bases. The Hurricanes scored eight runs in the first inning, the big blow being an opposite field blast off the bat of senior OF Jimmy Lubonski, who would later double and had three RBI on the day. Staked to a big lead, senior lefty DJ Mascetti threw strikes and worked a very effective five innings for the complete game win, his sixth, and the team's fifteenth. Mascetti allowed the Patuxent Panthers just two hits and two walks on the day. The 'Canes closed out the scoring in the second with a two-out rally. Senior Joey Kavanagh homered to left center and was followed by Nick Hardy and Cory Page who both doubled, and then junior Matt Beck singled home the 'Canes eleventh run. Other extra base hits belonged to Matt Baden [triple, 2 RBI] and John McIntosh [double, 2 RBI]. Next up for Huntingtown, their last trip to St. Mary's County in the 2007 season--an away game vs. the Chopticon Braves, Wednesday, May 2 at 4:30 PM. Thursday, May 3 Chopticon 5, 'Canes 1 Behind a strong performance by P Roy Maddox, Chopticon defeated Huntingtown 5-1. Maddox allowed only one hit through six innings-- a solo homer from senior OF Casey Becraft-- while working down in the zone and keeping 'Canes batters off balance throughout the game. Nick Hardy pitched with determination and poise over five innings in taking the loss, and it was often the last bounce of the baseball that was the difference between a double play and run-scoring hit. For Chopticon, the bounce was usually the run-scoring hit. For Huntingtown, the seventh inning told the tale--Huntingtown had their only other hits on the day [Kavanagh, Wolfe] but a double play between the two hits ended any chance for a rally. On a positive note, Huntingtown fans voted Chopticon's cheeseburgers the best in the SMAC. Chopticon's burgers received a "five cow" rating...McDonough and Huntingtown tied for second with four cows... Next up, the 'Canes play their last road contest of the year at Calvert on Friday, May 4 at 4:30 PM, before concluding the SMAC season at home with two next week. Playoff baseball is just around the corner, come on out and watch the 'Canes get ready for the post season. Saturday, May 5 Huntingtown 8, Calvert 4 Huntingtown had some timely hits and, mixed with some Calvert defensive miscues and great bullpen work, rallied from a 4-3 deficit after five innings to win 8-4. Starter Dustin Herbert went four innings plus and kept Calvert hitters off balance with a variety of pitches including a diving breaking ball. It was a back and forth game over the first four innings as the pitching on both sides was strong with each team scratching out three runs. Senior Cory Page entered in the fifth with the bases loaded and none out. He pitched superbly and got the Hurricanes out of the inning with only one run crossing the plate. While Calvert held the lead after five, they would not score again as Page threw a scoreless sixth and seventh. Overall he struck out four in three innings work and earned the win, as the Hurricanes roared back in the top of the sixth. Huntingtown played their version of "wall ball" in the sixth and posted five runs. Senior Joey Kavanagh led of by lining a double off the left field wall and before the inning was done Jimmy Lubonski had crushed one off the wall and fellow senior Nick Hardy would smack one off the wall in the seventh. Seven 'Canes had hits on the day, with SS Matt Baden having two with two RBI [Beck, Becraft and McIntosh had the others]. Next up: Thomas Stone comes to the friendly confines for the first time ever on Monday, May 7 at 4:30 PM as the 'Canes shoot for win number 17. Monday, May 7 'Canes 8, Stone 4 DJ Mascetti took the mound tonite for the hometown 'Canes and, throwing 67 of 98 pitches for strikes, went six and one third innings to notch the 'Canes seventeenth victory. Mascetti K'd nine while yielding two earned runs. Nick Hardy came on to record the last two outs for the save. Table setter Dave Bowen's 3-4 day [two triples] helped H'town jump out to a 6-0 lead. Dustin Herbert had two hits and four RBI and Joey Kavanagh was 1-2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. CF John McIntosh also contributed two hits. The final game of the regular season is Wed. Tuesday, May 15 'Canes Advance to Regional Semifinal, Defeat Hornets 11-1 After a first round bye, Huntingtown defeated Great Mills in second round regional action 11-1. Senior LHP DJ Mascetti took the mound for Huntingtown and, after an error and two walks produced the lone Hornets run in the top of the first, settled in for a five-inning, 73 pitch complete game win. Mascetti scattered four hits and walked one more the rest of the way. There were many offensive contributors as the 'Canes pounded out eight hits, four for extra bases, and took advantage of nine Hornets walks and two hit batsmen. Senior 3B Joey Kavanagh doubled in his only official at bat [2 BB, SAC], while scoring twice and driving in two. Matt Beck continued to swing a hot bat and was 2-3, with a double and 2 RBI. RF Jimmy Lubonski was 1-2 and had 2 RBI as well. SS Matt Baden was 2-3 with a long double and scored twice; Dave Bowen was 1-2 and was plunked two times, also scoring twice. Nick Hardy scored twice courtesy of three bases on balls. John McIntosh had the other 'Canes extra base hit, a double to left center. The game ended when Cory Page's sac fly to left scored pinch runner Jake Cox, who was called up to the Show for the playoffs after starting the season at Double-A Bowie. Friday, May 18 'Canes advance [woof], defeat LaPlata 11-1 [woof woof] Yes indeed, there were alot of woof tickets being sold in the days leading up to this game by our neighbors across the river in Charles County [translation for those under forty: LaPlata was talking alot of trash]. But Huntingtown let their arms and gloves and bats do the talking on their way to an 11-1 victory. Senior Dustin Herbert, starting his last game on his home mound at Huntingtown HS, pitched a masterful game, allowing just one run in 4 and 2/3 innings on just two hits and no walks [woof]. After yielding his only run in the top half of the first, senior Casey Becraft tied it with a solo homer to left center in the bottom half [woof woof]. Fellow senior John McIntosh was the "big dog" for the 'Canes with three hits and three RBI, the most important coming on a 2-out bases clearing double that changed the game from 1-1 to 4-1 [woofity woof woof]. From that point on, the 'Canes bats took over, leading 10-1 when the game was suspended by lightning. After a 23 hour rain delay, Nick Hardy relieved and got the last out in the visitors fifth. In the bottom half, the 'Canes loaded the bases until a hard shot off the bat of Joe Kavanagh was mishandled by LaPlata, driving in the winning run [last woof]. Also important today was the 'Canes D...seniors Matt Baden [SS] and Dave Bowen [2B]were very strong up the middle, squashing any opportunities the Warriors had to rally. The 20-2 'Canes will host the first regional championship game in Huntingtown's brief baseball history on Friday, May 18 at 4 PM. Come out and watch the 'Canes go for back-to-back regional championships! Saturday, May 19 SMAC Down! Three SMAC teams win regional baseball titles The SMAC showed again this year it is the top conference in Maryland baseball with three teams winning regional titles...the hometown Huntingtown Hurricanes claimed the 3A South crown, the Calvert Cavaliers defeated Glen Elg 1-0 on an RBI single by senior SS Nick Bowles to claim the 2A South Regional title and Thomas Stone beat Broadneck 8-6 in eleven innings to win the 4A East region. And by the way, Huntingtown softball won their third straight 3A south regional. Way to go ladies... Huntingtown [men's baseball] will play Westminster on Tuesday, May 22 in the 3A State Semi-final. The time has not yet been determined. More later....
