Hurricanes Take Two: 15-3 vs. Bowie and 8-3 vs. Roosevelt
A solid all-around effort powered the 'Canes to two victories Saturday, March 11. Huntingtown defeated two of the top schools visiting from Prince George's county, first Bowie 15-3, and then Eleanor Roosevelt 8-3. 'Canes pitchers allowed only six runs on the day, five of which were earned. Senior Ian Schwalenberg opened vs. Bowie with three innings of no-hit ball in which he faced the minimum and struck out three while walking none. Pitching with a big lead, juniors Dustin Herbert and Doug Burdsall followed with two innings each, throwing strikes and surrending only three runs the rest of the way. Against Roosevelt, junior lefty DJ Mascetti set the tone for another strong Huntingtown performance by allowing 1 unearned run over two innings of work while striking out four and walking none. He was followed by fellow junior Nick Hardy who went three innings allowing one earned run while striking out three and also walking none. Senior Chris Beyer closed Roosevelt out with two solid innings, also allowing only one run and walking none.

Defensively, the 'Canes matched their solid mound effort committing only one error over the day's fourteen innings.

Huntingtown batters pounded out 23 hits over the double header, the top four batters in the order going 9 for 19 with 11 runs scored and 11 RBI, including home runs from junior David Bowen, Schwalenberg and junior Joey Kavanagh. Junior Cory Page also smacked a grand slam vs Bowie, putting the game out of reach. Sophomore Matt Beck contributed three hits on the day and also scored three times. Junior Jimmy Lubonski also contributed three hits as did Schwalenberg and Kavanagh. Junior Matt Baden scored four runs on the day and Bowen and Schwalenberg each crossed the plate three times.

Complete game stats will be available Tuesday March 14.

'Canes Defeat South River and Southern, tie Annapolis in Final Pre-Season Tune-up
Opening vs South River with a gametime temperature of 38 degrees, the game started off as a pitcher's duel with 'Canes senior Chris Beyer throwing 4 innings of shutout ball with seven stikeouts as his command of all pitches kept the Seahawks off balance. He was matched by the Seahawks starter over the first three innings, but in the fourth the Seahawks defense collapsed, committing six errors sandwiched around a line drive homerun to center by junior Joey Kavanagh. Jumping out to a big lead, the 'Canes bats came alive with nine players recording at least one hit in the game [Hardy-2, Becraft, Bowen, Burdsall, Kady, Kavanagh-2, Herbert, Schwalenberg, and McRae]. Doug Burdsall pitched the last two innings, calmly working out of a jam in the final inning to preserve the 10-1 victory. Defensively, Huntingtown continued to be solid, with sophomore 3B Matt Beck making a sparkling play with a diving stop to his left while the game was still in doubt.

At Annapolis in very windy conditions, it began as a pitcher's duel and stayed that way as Huntingtown and Annapolis battled for five innings to a 1-1 tie. Senior Ian Schwalenberg got the start and featured a sharp, late-breaking curve to go with his fastball, holding Annapolis to 1 run, throwing 23 of his 29 pitches for strikes. Junior lefty Dustin Herbert pitched three innings of shutout ball, striking out five while walking none, having excellent command despite the game conditions. Huntingtown's batters managed five hits, paced by Chris Beyer with two with juniors John McIntosh, David Bowen and Kavanagh contributing the rest.

In the day's final contest against Southern, who is also the season opening opponent March 22, the Southern coaches opted to "not show us anything", and they were successful, as the 'Canes cruised to a 15-0 victory. Juniors DJ Mascetti and Nick Hardy combined on a four hit shutout, each throwing two strong innings in front of another strong defensive performance as the 'Canes offense pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of Southern's mistakes on their way to a run-rule victory.
Ten Huntingtown batters hit safely vs. Southern, with Beck and McIntosh stroking key doubles. Junior Matt Baden was 2 for 2 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Mike Candor, DJ Mascetti, Nick Hardy, Dustin Herbert and Jimmy Lubonski also had key hits.

Thursday, March 23
'Canes take season opener at Southern 9-3
The Hurricanes opened the 2006 season with the type of solid all-around performance that characterized their pre-season play. Senior Ian Schwalenberg scattered four hits and two earned runs over his three-plus innings of work before giving way to junior Nick Hardy who was very sharp and located his fastball and off-speed pitches well, earning the victory with four innings of shutout ball. Offensively, the Huntingtown lineup hit from top to bottom, many for extra bases. The first five batters went 9 for 15 with all nine RBI and 6 runs scored. Schwalenberg had two triples on the day, junior Joe Kavanagh two doubles and fellow junior Matt Baden one of each. Junior Casey Becraft and Nick Hardy also stroked doubles to right and left field, respectively. Junior Dave Bowen [2], Doug Burdsall and Baden contributed stolen bases during the Huntingtown rallies.

Next varsity game is at McDonough Friday 3/24 at 4 PM. To see game stats, click on 'stats' at left and then click on 'HHS 2006 Varsity' to see in-season stats. Click on 'combined' to include the pre-season tournaments.

Monday, March 27
'Canes Defeat McDonough, 7-5
In a game where both sides hit the ball and played solid defense, the Hurricanes prevailed 7-5, due to their edge in pitching. Senior Ian Schwalenberg opened the scoring in the top of the first with the first of his three hits, a long home run to left, staking starting pitcher DJ Mascetti to a 1-0 lead. Mascetti held down the Rams offense over his four innings of work allowing only one run and no walks in another fine effort, and was the eventual winning pitcher on the day.

The 'Canes offense staged a two-out rally in the third when back-to-back-to-back line drive doubles by Schwalenberg, junior Joey Kavanagh and senior Chris Beyer plated four runs. Beyer worked through a late innings jam during which the Rams staged their own two-out rally to close the gap to 6-5. A bunt by junior John McIntosh and a throwing error by the Rams led to an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Junior Dustin Herbert took the mound in the bottom of the seventh and calmly recorded his first varsity save, working through the meat of the McDonough order and fanning the last two batters with diving off-speed pitches. Defensively, the 'Canes remained sharp with senior catcher Frankie McRae hosing a Rams base runner to squash a potential rally. Junior Matt Baden also contributed two hits.

The first-ever home opener at Huntingtown High's Cookie Monster Field takes place Monday, March 27 at 4 PM vs. Patuxent HS. Come on out to "the Cookie" and root for the home town 'Canes!!

Patuxent tops 'Canes in extra innings, 5-2
In a tight, nine-inning battle which featured 22 strikeouts and only 3 walks, a late rally by the Panthers pushed them past the Hurricanes in the home opener. Senior Ian Schwalenberg started and struck out seven and walked none, leaving after six innings with the score tied at two. In a game dominated by pitching, Huntingtown uncharacteristically managed only six hits total [Schwalenberg-2, Kavanagh-3 and McRae], and each was hit hard. Patuxent pitchers Frisch, Bruce and Starr registered between 84-91 on the radar gun and limited the 'Canes on the bases until the Panthers ninth inning rally. Huntingtown junior Nick Hardy contributed two innings of shutout relief in the late innings. Defensively, senior Frankie McRae threw out baserunners at second and third.

Thursday, March 30
'Canes Victorious at Calvert 6-2
Behind a six-inning shutout effort by junior southpaw DJ Mascetti, Huntingtown rallied in the late innings to pull away from the Cavaliers, who also pitched well, to win 6-2.

'Canes batters struggled early against the Calvert starter, but a clutch two-out double by Nick Hardy gave Huntingtown a 1-0 lead and the momentum. A pinch-hit single by junior Cory Page plated another run and later, a two-run double by junior Dave Bowen widened the lead. Senior Frankie McRae had three of Huntingtown's eight hits on the day.

After pitching out of a first-inning jam, Mascetti cruised, at one point retiring eleven in a row on his way to the win. Junior Doug Burdsall came on in the seventh and closed out the 'Canes third win of the 2006 season.

Monday, April 3
Huntingtown Shuts Out Patriots, 3-0
The Hurricanes relied again on their strong pitching and timely hitting in defeating the Patriots at Northern, 3-0. Senior Chris Beyer took the mound for the 'Canes and kept the Patriot hitters off balance over his five innngs of work, consistently spotting his fastball and curve up and down, in and out. Beyer scattered four hits and walked one. Starting for Northern was Radford University [VA.] signee Adam Hoyt, who was reached for two runs in the second. Junior Joey Kavanagh led off with a lined single to right-center and was driven in by a two-out double to left by junior Nick Hardy later in the inning. Senior Frankie McRae followed with another two-out hit, scoring Hardy. The two-run lead would prove to be enough as Hardy followed Beyer to the mound for the save, throwing two shutout innings during which his fastball ranged between 83- 86 mph. The 'Canes added an insurance run when Dave Bowen who, like Hardy, had two hits on the day, was driven in by senior Ian Schwalenberg. The 'Canes are at 3-1 in the SMAC and 4-1 overall with Westlake up next.

Friday, April 7
Westlake 6, 'Canes 3
A combination of walks, hit batsmen, defensive lapses and men left on base were too much for the 'Canes to overcome against a solid Westlake team as Huntingtown fell, 6-3. After surrendering an early run, the 'Canes took the lead on senior Frankie McRae's long three-run homer. What might have been enough offense on another day was not today and Westlake plated five more runs with only one hit. Huntingtown fought back but could not find the timely hit. Bright spots for the 'Canes were juniors Matt Baden and Casey Becraft, each with two hits. Junior Doug Burdsall contributed two innings of scoreless relief. The 'Canes hope to bounce back on April 5 vs. Lackey.

Friday, April 7
'Canes notch first ever home win, 7-6 vs. Lackey
The sharpness of Huntingtown's pitching staff returned and that, coupled with timely hits, were enough to overcome another sub-par defensive effort. Juniors DJ Mascetti, Dustin Herbert and Nick Hardy combined to allow only one earned run among seven total for Lackey. Senior Frankie McRae homered for the second consecutive game and, trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the fifth, junior Joey Kavanagh launched a pitch on the outside corner over the right field fence with a man on for what would prove to be the game winner. On a positive fielding note, the game ended as the 'Canes turned a smooth double play, hopefully a sign of a return to defensive excellence by Huntingtown. The 'Canes are now 5-2 overall.

Monday, April 10
LaPlata 10, Hurricanes 6
The starting battery contributed 2 home runs and 4 RBI but it was not enough as timely LaPlata hits proved the difference 10-6. Senior Chris Beyer contributed his first homer of the season and junior catcher Jimmy Lubonski was 2 for 3 with a homer and three RBI. Junior Matt Baden and Senior Ian Schwalenberg contributed 2 hits each. Next up is Leonardtown at home on Monday April 10. Stats will be caught up April 12.

Wednesday, April 12
'Canes 2, Leonardtown 1
The Hurricanes bounced back with a narrow 2-1 victory over Leonardtown in a game marked by good pitching and defense on both sides. The middle infielders for both teams performed at a high level throughout the contest, only to be exceeded by diving efforts by their teammates in the grass. Several base hits were taken away on the day by both sides, beginning with a diving grab in right by junior Jimmy Lubonski. Junior John McIntosh turned in another diving catch in center, but Mr. Blue ruled the ball hit the ground. Replay review was inconclusive and, fortunately for Huntingtown, no damage was done. Senior Ian Schwalenberg went the route for the victory scattering five hits and two walks while striking out nine, featuring the fastball early and breaking ball late to keep the Raiders hitters off balance. Senior Chris Beyer and junior Casey Beacraft accounted for the 'Canes RBIs on the day and senior Frankie McRae had two hits.

Tuesday, April 18
'Canes split Holiday Doubleheader
The Hurricanes split the 2006 Easter Tournament, losing the opener to Patuxent 5-4 and defeating Calvert 6-4 in game two. In the opener, Huntingtown took a 2-1 lead into the fifth behind a two hit effort by junior DJ Mascetti who allowed one unearned run. Junior Matt Baden homered twice off the hard-throwing Kurt Bruce in what would become a back and forth contest. Patuxent rallied late and another homer off Bruce by junior Dustin Herbert left the 'Canes just short. In game two, the 'Canes scored in the first on a double by Dave Bowen and a sac fly from Joe Kavanagh, but this too would be a back and forth game as Calvert had the lead late 4-2. A series of walks by Cavalier pitchers opened the doors for the 'Canes who took advantage with some well-executed "small ball". Junior Matt White and sophomore Matt Beck laid down perfect bunts and junior Kevin Kady roared home on the suicide squeeze as the 'Canes prevailed 6-4 with Dustin Herbert getting the relief win. For the day's games Bowen, Hardy, Schwalenberg and McRae also had two hits. Stats will be up Friday April 21.

Tuesday, April 25
'Canes defeat Great Mills 10-5
After 11 days off due to spring breaks in the different counties making up the SMAC, Huntingtown opened the second half of the season with sound pitching timely hits in the rain and wind to beat Great Mills. After falling behind 3-1, the 'Canes rallied in the third when a single by junior Joe Kavanagh and a double by senior Frankie McRae scored junior Dave Bowen and Senior Ian Schwalenberg to tie the score. After that, the 'Canes took advantage of Hornet walks and miscues to ultimately win 10-5. Junior DJ Mascetti went six and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 earned runs while running his high school record to 13-1. He walked only two and junior Dustin Herbert recorded the last two outs of the game. In contrast, the Hornets pitcher walked nine as he went the entire distance throwing an unheard of 152 pitches over seven innings. The 'Canes took advantage and ran the bases well, with Schwalenberg having three steals and scoring three times, and Bowen two steals and three runs scored. McRae and Schwalenberg had 2 rbi each. Through the SMAC so far the middle of the 'Canes order, Schwalenberg, Kavanagh and McRae, are a combined 15 for 29 with runners in scoring position.

Tuesday, April 25
'Canes 10, McDonough 0
Ian Schwalenberg threw a five-inning one-hitter as the 'Canes displyed great patience at the plate and defeated the Rams 10-0 in a run-rule victory. Schwalenberg featured his fastball the first time thru the lineup and a sharp- breaking curve the second time through and held the Rams offense in check while his offense produced.

Facing hard-throwing Rams righty Steven Sobocinski [who was bringing it in the 88-90 range], Huntingtown batters remained patient as Sobocinski, recently out of a cast, struggled early with his command and walked nine in two and a third innings. The 'Canes discipline at the plate allowed them to take advantage of the walks and the timely hitting of juniors Casey Becraft [double and single], Dave Bowen [also double and single] and senior Frankie McRae [single] drove men in. Juniors Matt Baden and Joe Kavanagh reached base seven times on six walks and an HBP. More on this game tomorrow when the stats come in.

Thursday, April 27
Northern 5, Huntingtown 2
Northern earned a season split with the 'Canes, each team winning on the road, with a 5-2 victory last night. Juniors Logan Coker [7 IP, excellent command] and Tim Hull [3-3, HR] led the Patriots. With both teams battling to stay at or near the top of the SMAC it was a high-energy game as expected, and probably not the last time these teams will meet this year. More later.....

Monday, May 1
Lackey 4, Huntingtown 2
Although they hit the ball hard, it was often right at a Lackey player, and the 'Canes fell short on the road 4-2. Starter Chris Beyer allowed three earned runs over his four innings of work and was followed by junior Nick Hardy who allowed two hits and no runs in two innings of work. Huntingtown had only five hits on the day [Baden, Bowen, Becraft, Kavanagh and Schwalenberg] with Bowen and Schwalenberg accounting for the 2 'Canes rbis. Next game is Monday, May 1 vs. the Panthers at Patuxent, as the fight for playoff seeding continues. Stats will be updated tomorrow!

Thursday, May 4
Hurricanes 8, Panthers 4
Huntingtown played long ball early and small ball late to rally for an 8-4 victory at Patuxent. Senior Ian Schwalenberg opened the scoring with a long homerun over the 380 sign in center scoring junior Dave Bowen, who had singled, ahead of him. The teams battled back and forth over the next six innings with the score tied at four going into the seventh. Juniors Nick Hardy and Matt White turned sacrifice situations into base hits with perfectly placed bunts and ignited a four run 'Canes rally that was the difference in the ballgame. Schwalenberg, who went the distance, calmly retired the Panthers in order in the seventh for the victory. Casey Becraft had three RBI on the day and Bowen, Schwalenberg and senior Frankie McRae recorded two hits each.

Thursday, May 10
'Canes 7, Cavs 2
Huntingtown completed a season sweep of county rival, Calvert HS, 7-2 behind a strong pitching performance by junior Nick Hardy. Hardy pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing two earned runs in earning the win. Huntingtown's bats were quiet as the hometown team managed only four hits. Calvert's pitchers surrendered eight walks and three hit batsmen which paved the way for the Hurricanes victory. Frankie McRae had three RBI and Dave Bowen scored three times for the 'Canes.

Friday, May 4
Braves 7, 'Canes 6
Huntingtown rallied twice but fell one run short, losing to the Braves, 7-6. Huntingtown errors helped Chopticon jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first, but the 'Canes came out hitting in the home half of the first as a double to the right field gap by senior Ian Schwalenberg, a single to left by senior Frankie McRae and a double off the base of the right field wall by junior Joe Kavanagh levelled the score at 3. Chopticon pushed the lead to 6-3 in the second and it was 6-4 in the sixth when junior Dustin Herbert homered to right-center, his second hit of the day, to close the gap to 6-5. It was 7-5 going into the home half of the seventh and the 'Canes rallied to close the gap to 7-6 with the bases loaded and one out, but it was not to be as the Braves made the plays they needed to hold on for the win. Junior Doug Burdsall starred for the 'Canes with six innings of excellent relief, locating all his pitches well and allowing only one run on three hits.

Thursday, May 10
Northeast 5, 'Canes 4
Huntingtown's guests from Anne Arundel county prevailed as Northeast edged the 'Canes 5-4. The Eagles managed to get the timely hit as senior starter Ian Schwalenberg only allowed four on the day in taking the loss despite a well-pitched game. Huntingtown suffered from a pair of late-inning errors which turned a 4-3 lead into a 5-4 deficit and that, coupled with a lack of timely hitting [the 'Canes left nine men on base], was the story of the day against a solid Northeast nine.

The playoff draw was announced after the game with the 'Canes earning a first round bye. The first playoff game ever at Huntingtown HS will be Monday May 15 vs. Friendly HS. Succeeding games will be determined by the playoffs "one and done" format. Also in the 'Canes bracket--Duval, Gwynn Park, and LaPlata. Huntingtown closes out the SMAC schedule tonite vs. #1 Thomas Stone at Stone. No better way to get ready for the playoffs than by knocking off #1!

Friday, May 11
'Canes Knock Stone from top of SMAC, 7-1
Huntingtown's win in the last game before the playoff tournament knocked Thomas Stone HS out of first place and gave the SMAC title to rival Northern HS [gag]. The 'Canes never trailed behind an excellent effort by junior lefty DJ Mascetti, who allowed one run over six innings while striking out seven. His off speed stuff was diving like it had vaseline on it and Stone never threatened after scoring in the first. Sophomore Matt Beck contributed a triple and a single. Frankie McRae stayed hot with a 3 for 4 day and Nick Hardy finished the game with a scoreless seventh. Junior Casey Becraft hit a pop to short that a sea gull caught in mid-air and dropped beyond the left field fence for a homerun....Ok, seriously, it was a legit shot. On the defensive side, junior John McIntosh threw out a Stone runner trying to advance to third on a single to center; and Mascetti showed Matrix-like quickness to spear a rocket through the box that would have taken out his gall bladder had he missed it.

Playoff Game 1 Monday, May 15 at 4 PM vs. Friendly at home.

Wednesday, May 16
'Canes Win Playoff Opener vs. Friendly
Senior Chris Beyer and juniors DJ Mascetti and Doug Burdsall combined to allow four hits and two earned runs in Huntingtown's victory vs. Friendly. The trio was sharp, striking out ten and walking none. It was Huntingtown's first playoff win in the school's brief history. Huntingtown moves on to the regional semi-finals vs. La Plata on May 17 at 4 PM at home.

Huntingtown pounded out twelve hits and batted .500 with runners in scoring position as there were many contributors to the victory. Senior Ian Schwalenberg was 3 for 3 with a homer and four RBI, junior Joe Kavanagh went 2 for 4 with four RBI and junior Dave Bowen was 2 for 2 with a triple off the left center field wall and also scored three times. The Friendly coach stayed away from Kevin Kady as the junior drew three walks [and then scored three times].

Mike Candore showed a good eye at the plate as he drew two walks and scored twice. Junior Jim Lubonski had a base hit to plate two runs and junior Matt White also had a base hit and scored twice. The game ended on a routine 1-3-9-1-2 putout with pitcher Doug Burdsall backing up third and firing to sophomore Matt Beck who applied the tag to the Friendly runner at the plate.

Friday, May 18
'Canes Advance to Regional Final, 11-5
Behind an offensive performance in which even the outs were loud, Huntingtown smacked thirteen hits and scored eleven times to defeat La Plata 11-5. It was the 'Canes first victory ever against La Plata. Junior Dave Bowen filled up the box score with a homer and a double, driving in two while scoring four times, courtesy of two walks. Senior Ian Schwalenberg, who pitched a complete game while throwing 106 pitches, also homered and had three RBI on the day. Junior Casey Becraft also had two hits on the day and senior Frankie McRae doubled in two runs to break the game open.

Huntingtown will face the Northern Patriots in the Regional Championship Game Friday, May 19 at 4 PM at Northern, to earn the right to compete next week for the Maryland 3A State Championship. Come to the game Friday and help us generate some "Category Five" noise!!

Sunday, May 20
'Canes oust Patriots, Claim Regional Title, 4-1
Huntingtown defeated rival Northern HS, 4-1, in a well played game to claim the first title in the school's history for a men's athletic team. The 'Canes were loose in warm-ups and pumped during the contest as their intensity matched the importance of the day. They were focused but not tight and behind the encouragement of the Huntingtown coaches, made plays over seven innings to defeat the SMAC champions.

Junior DJ Mascetti pitched six-plus innings, allowing one earned run. He was sharp all day mixing pitches up and down, in and out, and keeping the Northern batters from getting too comfortable at the plate. He calmly pitched out of the one jam he faced during the game.

The 'Canes led off the second with a walk to senior Frankie McRae, followed by a base hit by junior Joe Kavanagh. A hit by junior Nick Hardy scored McRae and junior John McIntosh drove in Kavanagh later in the inning. In the fourth, Hardy singled again, scoring Kavanagh [who had walked] and junior Casey Becraft delivered a run-scoring single to plate Hardy for Huntingtown's fourth and final run.

Northern junior Tim Hull pitched great in relief for the Patriots, having been the workhorse during the week, appearing in every game for the Patriots during the Regional Tournament. The game ended when Nick Hardy relieved in the seventh to strike out Northern catcher Nick Sydnor, who represented the tying run at the time.

The Northern players exhibited great sportsmanship in defeat, wishing the 'Canes good luck in the State Tournament. Likewise, the parents of the Northern players showed a great deal of class in congratulating Hurricane parents and players alike.

The story of the 2006 Season continues Tuesday night May 23, at 7 PM, at Joe Cannon Stadium. The 'Canes take the field against North Region Champion Franklin HS in the State Semi-Final. The State Championship Game will be played at Cal Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, MD., Saturday, May 27 at 7 PM vs. the winner of Bennett HS [East Champ] and North Carroll HS [West Champ].

Thursday, May 24
'Canes Win, 2-0; on to State Final vs. J.M. Bennett
Huntingtown Baseball will seek its first state championship May 27 after defeating Franklin HS 2-0 last evening at Joe Cannon Stadium.

Senior Ian Schwalenberg went the distance for the complete game victory and after allowing two first inning hits, was never really threatened. Featuring devastating breaking stuff all evening, Schwalenberg was in command of the game and recorded eleven K's. A potential Franklin rally was shut down in the first when a hustling Jim Lubonski in right backed up John McIntosh's diving attempt at a line drive in shallow center and got the ball into the infield in time to catch the Franklin runner between second and third. Two relays later and the threat was over.

Huntingtown scored when a two out double by junior Matt Baden one-hopped the wall in left, driving in the first run. The 'Canes second run scored when the Franklin right fielder muffed a routine fly ball off the bat of Schwalenberg with two outs. The 'Canes only managed four hits on the day [two in the infield], but their pitching and defense carried them on.

The State Championship will be decided Saturday at 7 PM at Cal Ripken Stadium vs. J.M. Bennett, the East Region Champion.

Wednesday, May 30
Bennett Edges 'Canes, 3-2 in 10 innings for State Title
state champ pregame
Coaches and players before the big game
Congratulations to JM Bennett High on their Maryland 3A State Championship.

Congratulations also to all Hurricane coaches and players on an exceptional season, one that was characterized by skill, determination and the type of team chemistry that champions are made of. Special congratulations to the 2006 senior class, Chris Beyer, Frankie McRae and Ian Schwalenberg--we couldn't have gotten this far without all of your contributions! Good luck in college, men.

Junior DJ Mascetti, who pitched the 'Canes to victory in the regional final, took the mound for Huntingtown. He pitched very well throwing 38 of his 57 pitches for strikes including first pitch strikes to 2/3 of the batters he faced. He allowed two runs [one earned] in four complete innings of work and left with the score tied at two.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the third, Huntingtown fought back in the bottom of the inning. After junior Matt Baden singled and junior David Bowen reached on an error by the shortstop, the pair executed a double steal to put both runners in scoring position. With two out, junior Joe Kavanagh stroked a curve ball into left, scoring both runners and giving the 'Canes a 2-1 lead. Bennett would tie the game on an unearned run in the top of the fourth and senior Ian Schwalenberg came on in relief in the fifth inning. The game went back and forth over the last six innings, both teams making big defensive plays and also missing out on scoring opportunites. Schwalenberg pitched six strong innings, allowing only one run as Bennett pushed across the game-winner in the top of the tenth.

The full game recap can be found in the attached handout. The team will be recognized tonite, May 30, at the Spring Sports Assembly beginning at 7 PM at HHS.
