Humble Girls Softball League (HGSL): Rec League Basic Info
Coaches: We are always looking for coaches, so if you would like to coach your daughter’s team, please complete a coaches application (located in the Handouts & Forms Section of this web site) and email it to info@humblesoftball.com.
New Player Birth Certificates: If you are new to the league and have not provided a copy of your child's birth certificate, please provide one at walk-up registration or try-outs. They can also be scanned & emailed to info@humblesoftball.com.
Tryouts: Tryouts are a day set aside so that players can demonstrate their athletic abilities and softball skills to the coaches for the season. For tryouts, each player should have a fielding glove and wear cleats (if outdoors) or sneakers (if at Extra Innings, an indoor facility). Optional equipment includes a bat, batting helmet and catchers gear, if applicable. If a player does not have a batting helmet or bat, there will be some available to use, but each player should have their own fielding glove. For this day, you will need to dress your daughter appropriately for the weather if outdoors and in Softball attire (t-shirt and shorts or sweats). She will be participating in fielding, running and batting activities. Depending on the number of registrants, she may be in line waiting her turn so she will need to bring something to drink. When tryouts are held at the Extra Innings indoor training facility, please wear tennis shoes and not cleats.
Tryouts are not required (but are certainly encouraged) to be placed onto a team. All girls who register will be placed onto a team. Those that do not attend try-outs will be placed in the blind draft and are randomly placed onto a team after the regular draft process is completed.
Fundraisers: Each player is required to participate in the league fundraiser. You must turn in money to your coach/team mom who will turn it in on the due date. There will be prizes for various levels of participation for those players who sell over and above the required amounts. Fundraisers will be given to coaches at Draft to distribute to their team.
Uniforms: Each player is provided a uniform for the color of her team and this is included in the cost of registration. For Fall Seasons, it is a t-shirt style top and will have a generic league screen print on the front with a number on the back. For Spring seasons, it is a softball style uniform consisting of a top and shorts with a team name/logo on the front and number on the back. Sometimes visors or socks are provided, but this varies from Spring to Spring season.
Equipment: Each team is supplied with catcher's gear, batting helmets, bats and balls for team use. It is up to each player whether to purchase their own individual batting helmet or personal bat. Each player is required to furnish their own fielding glove and to wear cleats or tennis shoes as appropriate.
Softball specifics used by each age division are as follows:
6U: 11"; 44 safety core; AD Starr DX-11-S0, synthetic cover, yellow
8U: 11"; 44 safety core; AD Starr DX-11-S0, synthetic cover, yellow
10U: 11"; 47 cork core; 375 lb max compression; leather cover, yellow
12U: 12"; 47 cork core; 375 lb max compression; leather cover, yellow
14U/16U: 12"; 47 cork core; 375 lb max compression; leather cover, yellow
Practices: Each team will be given one practice time during the week (M, T, Th or F) and then one time slot on Saturday (9:00 - tbd based on # of teams). It is up to each coach whether to utilize the practice time assigned at the HGSL fields or whether to practice at a different facility on a different day/time. The weekday practice time slots will be 5:30 - 6:45 and then 6:45 - 8:00 with the younger teams having the earlier time slot. The older age divisions (10U +) will also be allowed at least one time slot each week to utilize the batting cages.
Lindsay-Lyons is a Harris County Park and their rules are that we have lights for a maximum of two hours for practices. Lights will be turned off on the fields at 8:00 pm, regardless of when they are turned on. Please be aware of this and have your team off the fields and in the parking lot/heading home at 8:00; it gets really dark out there when they turn off the lights!!
Games: For Fall Seasons, there are 10 games and for Spring Seasons there are 12 games, plus an end of season tournament each season. Games are played on Mon, Tue, Thurs, Fri and some Sat. Most likely, on Friday nights, there will be 3 rounds of games instead of the historical 2 rounds. This, plus some Saturday games will be required to get in all the games for every team. HGSL has a no-game policy on evenings prior to Humble ISD School Testing Dates or school district holidays. Games for the 6U, 8U and some of 10U Divisions will start at 6:00 on weekdays (M, T, Th, Fri). Games for some of 10U, 12U and 14U/16U Divisions will be the second time slot of 7:30. On Friday nights, depending on number of teams, we may need to play 3 rounds of games, so would have an additional round starting at 9:00 or 9:30, but that is still to be determined.
The end of season tournament is a separate event from regular league games. All teams standings start over and a true tournament style bracket will be developed. All teams participate. Typically, this is a double elimination tournament.
