Heartbreakers Organization
The 18U Heartbreakers Red Junior Olympic fastpitch softball team is one of 6 travel teams in the Heartbreakers Organization. The Heartbreakers were established in 1993 with one 14U team and organization has expanded to have teams in the 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U age groups for the 2009 season. The 18U Heartbreakers Red team competes in tournaments every weekend between Memorial Day and national tournament in August. The goal of the team is to compete at the highest levels of fastpitch softball, get the players exposure with college coaches, and to have fun. The team is supported by generous corporate sponsors, personal donations, team fundraisers and the annual softball camp held in June.

The 14th Annual Heartbreakers Softball Camp was held on June 29-July 2 at Ballenger Creek Park. 107 young ladies participated in the camp. Photos will be added to an album soon.

HB Red Goes Undefeated at Newtown Rock Gold Showcase
The Heartbreakers Red went 5-0-1 in the Newtown Rock Showcase tournament on June 25-27. Below is a summary of each game:
HB Red 5 – Shamrocks 4
Taryn Ashway scattered 8 hits and allowed only 2 earn runs and struck out 5 batters to gain the 5-4 win over the Shamrocks. Jade Bowins started the game with an infield hit. After stealing 2nd and 3rd base, Karson Tuck doubled to left center to give the HB Red a 1-0 lead. Tuck scored on a fielder’s choice. In the 2nd Kim Anders led off with a walk and scored on Bowins 2nd hit of the game. They added another run in the 3rd when Ashway doubled and scored on Rochelle Christman’s single for a 4-1 lead. After the Shamrocks rallied to tie the game in the top of the 5th inning, Amy Metcalfe singled and scored on Tuck’s double for a 5-4 win. Bre Lohman had the other Heartbreakers hit.
HB Red 9 – NJ Top Gun 0
Anders tossed a 2 hitter and struck out 5 for the shutout victory. Bowins got the team going again with a leadoff single and scored on Lohman’s sacrifice fly in the first. In the 2nd inning, Christman singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Gator Ball. In the 5th, Erin McNally doubled and scored on Bowins’ single. In the 6th, Tuck singled and scored on Christman’s sacrifice fly for a 4-0 lead. In the final stanza, doubles by Anders and Tuck and singles by Erin McNally, Ball, Bowins, and Ashway produced another 5 runs for the 9-0 final.
HB Red 7 – NJ Heist 4
Erin McNally gained the win as she scattered 7 hits over 6 1/3 innings. Anders got the final 2 outs to earn the save. HB Red jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning as Metcalfe walked, Tuck was hit by a pitch, and Ashway singled in the first run. Lohman grounded out to drive in Tuck and Christman doubled to score Ashway. 3 more runs scored in the 2nd thanks to singles by Erin McNally, Ball, Katy McNally, and Ashway. The final tally came in the 3rd innings when Anders doubled and scored on Bowins’ single.
HB Red 2 – Williamsburg Starz Gold 2
Ashway scattered 8 hits and struck out 5 batters in the 2-2 tie against the Starz. HB Red got on the scoreboard first in the 3rd inning when Bowins and Metcalfe singled and stole bases to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Tuck’s fly to center brought in Bowins and an attempt to throw Metcalfe out at third resulted in a throwing error and a 2-0 HB Red lead. In the top of the 7th the Starz managed to tie the game and the time limit expired. Erin McNally and Metcalfe had 2 hits and Anders, Bowins, and Tuck had the other hits.
HB Red 4 – VA Lady Eagles 0
Anders fired a 3 hitter and struck out two for the shutout victory over the Lady Eagles. In the 2nd inning, Katy Bobbitt led off with a single and scored on Anders long double to right. In the 5th inning, Christman and Bobbitt singled and advanced to 2nd and 3rd on Anders’ fly to left. Erin McNally drove in 2 runs with a single to finish the scoring for the Heartbreakers.
HB Red 0 – CT Mirage 1
Ashway threw a 2-hitter and struck out 2 for the victory over the Mirage. Another good first inning got the Heartbreakers going when Metcalfe singled and later scored on a passed ball. Tuck singled and scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Lohman walked and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop. In the 3rd inning, Tuck reached on an error and scored on Ashway’s sacrifice fly. In the 5th, Bowins singled, stole 2nd, and scored on an error. In the final frame, Lohman and Chrisman singled to start the inning. Anders drove in one run with a fielder’s choice grounder and Erin McNally drove in a run with a single. Anders and Erin McNally scored on Katy McNally’s fly ball that the right fielder couldn’t handle to end the game by the mercy rule.

ASA State Champs
For the 3rd straight weekend the 18U Heartbreakers Red came away with a first place finish as they won the 2009 Maryland ASA State championship at Fairland Park in Laurel on Sunday. They beat the Churchville Lightning 7-0 in the final. Below is a summary of each game.
HB Red 5 – Catonsville Chaos 4
Patti Maloney got the win as she scattered 3 hits and struck out 3 batters. Erin McNally came on to record the final out for the save. Amy Metcalfe had 2 hits and scored twice to pace the offense. Karson Tuck added a double and 2 RBI. Jade Bowins, Breanne Lohman, Taryn Ashway, Kim Anders, and Erin McNally had the other hits for HB.
HB Red 4 – MD Chill 1
Erin McNally tossed a 4-hitter and struck out 1 batter to get the victory over the Chill. Erin and Taylor Wyatt each had 2 hits including a double by Erin. Bowins, Lohman, and Ashway had the other hits. The 2 wins in pool play made the HB Red the #1 Seed from our bracket feeding into double elimination play.
HB Red 2 – Washington Senators 1
Ashway fired a 1-hitter and allowed only 1 unearned run as she struck out 8 Senators in the win. Bowins, Ashway, and Wyatt each had 2 hits. One of Ashway’s hits was a booming triple to center field. It was a costly win as Wyatt suffered a fractured right leg and Katy McNally injured her shoulder in separate baserunning plays.
HB Red 9 – Churchville Lightning 1
Anders pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 2 to get the win over the Lightning. Metcalfe, Ashway, Rochelle Christman, and Erin McNally each had 2 hits. Erin McNally and Christman each had doubles. Bowins, Tuck, Lohman, and Katy Bobbitt had the others hits.
HB Red 11 – Bayside Blues 3
In the finals of the winner’s bracket, HB Red defeated the Bayside Blues 11-3. Ashway limited the Blues to 5 hits and struck out 2 for the win. Down 1-0 going into the top of the 2nd, HB Red exploded for 8 runs on 8 hits. A 2 run triple by Tuck and a 3 run homer by Christman were two of the highlights from that inning. Lohman had 3 hits, Bowins, Metcalfe, Tuck, and Christman had 2 hits apiece. Ashway, Kali Ball, Bobbitt, and Erin McNally had the other hits.
HB Red 7 – Churchville Lightning 0
In the finals, Anders dominated the Lightning again as she tossed a 2 hit shutout to gain the State championship for HB Red. Bowins had 3 hits and Anders had 2 to pace the offense. Erin McNally drove in 3 runs with a single and a groundout. Ball, Tuck, Ashway, Christman, Lohman, and Bobbitt had the other hits for HB.

Heartbreakers Capture ASA Regional Crown
The Heartbreakers Red won the 2009 ASA Central Atlantic Regionals in California, MD, on Sunday. The win qualifies the team for the ASA National Tournament in Las Vegas, NV, on July 26-August 2. Below is a summary of each game.
HB Red 12 – VA Lady Aces 7
In our first pool play game, the team rallied from a 6-4 deficit in the last inning with an 8 run rally to beat the Aces. Karson Tuck led the way offensively with 3 hits including a double. Katy McNally and Rochelle Christman added doubles to the attack. Erin McNally and Taryn Ashway combined for the win.
HB Red 3 – VA Waves 6
In the 2nd pool play game, HB Red dropped a 6-3 decision to the Waves. Patti Maloney and Ashway pitched a 4 hitter. Katy Bobbitt, Tuck, and Erin McNally had the only hits for HB.
Double Elimination Play –
HB Red 9 – VA Fire & Ice
Kim Anders tossed a 1-hitter and struck out 4 batters to get the win. Amy Metcalfe and Ashway each had 2 hits. Ashwaycollected 2 triples and Tuck and Katy McNally added triples to the offense. After taking a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, Katy McNally came through with a 2 run triple which led to 2 more runs scoring to break the game open. Bobbitt, Anders, Tuck, and Jade Bowins had the other HB hits.
HB Red 2 – VA Stars 0
Ashway pitched a 3-hit shotout and struck out 9 batters for the victory. All of the scoring came in the 2nd inning when Ashway singled and came home on Christman’s booming triple and later scored on a wild pitch. Tuck and Erin McNally had the other hits.
HB Red 3 – Bayside Blues 0
Anders allowed only 4 hits and struck out 6 in tossing a shutout over the Blues. Bowins and Metcalfe led off the game with singles and Ashway plated the first two runs with a long double to center. In the 3rd inning, Bowins singled, stole 2nd, and scored on Tuck’s RBI single. Katy McNally had the other hit for HB.
HB Red 5 – Richmond Ruckus 0
HB Red scored single runs in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th innings and added 2 more in the 5th to beat the Ruckus 5-0. Ashway tossed a 3 hitter and struck out 3 batters. Taylor Wyatt hit a long triple to left center to score Katy McNally who was running for Ashway to open the scoring. In the 3rd, Bowins singled, stole 2nd, advanced to third on a sacrifice by Metcalfe, and scored on Tuck’s RBI single. In the 4th, Christman singled, advanced to 2nd on Bobbitt’s sacrifice, and scored on Wyatt’s single. In the 5th, Metcalfe was hit by a pitch and Tuck singled to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Anders advanced the runners and they scored on successive sacrifice flies by Ashway and Christman.
HB Red 5 – Bayside Blue 2
In the championship game, Anders took control and held the Blues to 2 runs on 3 hits and struck out 3. The Heartbreakers scored 4 times in the 2nd inning. Bowins had 2 hits and Christman tripled to lead the offense. Other HB hits came from Bobbitt, Wyatt, Anders, and Katy McNally.

Anders Signs with Belmont Abbey
Heartbreakers Red Pitcher/1B Kim Anders signed a NCAA National Letter of Intent to continue her education and softball career at DII Belmont Abbey College in Charlotte, NC. Kim will graduate from Linganore High School in June. Congratulations, Kim!

Heartbreakers Red Win ASA Eastern Qualifier
Heartbreakers Red Win Thunder ASA Invitational
The Heartbreakers Red defeated their sister team in the finals of the Tri-State Thunder ASA Invitational in Williamsport on Sunday. Both Heartbreakers teams qualified for the ASA Eastern National in York, PA, on July 29-August 2.
On Saturday, the HB Red team swept three games. They beat the Shenandoah Mavericks 8-2 behind a strong pitching effort by Patti Maloney. She struck out 4 and allowed only 2 hits in the win. Katy McNally, Kali Ball, Breanne Lohman, and Kim Anders each had 2 hits. Taryn Ashway added a homerun while Anders had a double and a triple. Karson Tuck tripled and Ball had a double too.
They beat the Lake Shore Lightning 10-0 as Anders pitched a 1-hitter and struck out 4. Ashway had 3 hits and Taylor Wyatt, Katy Bobbitt, and Tuck each had 2 hits. Anders added a double to the offensive attack.
They beat the Maryland Stars 6-0 behind a 4-hit shutout by Ashway who struck out 6. Erin McNally had 3 hits and Katy McNally and Tuck added 2 to the offense. Anders added a double for only extra base hit. The win gave the HB Red the #1 seed going into elimination play on Sunday.
They beat the MD Stars again on Sunday by a 5-0 score. Anders allowed only 2 hits and struck out4. Jade Bowins had 3 hits Ashway added two to pace the offense. Wyatt added a triple also. The only Stars threat came in the 3rd inning with 1st and 2nd and 1 out but a one hopper back to Anders went to Rochelle Christman at 3rd and a strong throw to first halted that rally.
In the semi-finals Ashway dominated the Lightning 9-0 on a 1-hittter with 7 strikeouts. Tuck had 3 hits and 5 RBI while Amy Metcalfe, Ashway and Ball had 2 hits each.
In the championship game, Anders allowed 3 hits and struck out 4 in the shutout victory. Ashway had 3 hits and Bobbitt had 2 hits to lead the offense.

Erin McNally Commits to Hood College
Heartbreakers Pitcher and Utility Player Erin McNally has committed to Hood College for the 2009 fall semester. Erin will graduate from Walkersville High School in June. Hood College is coached by Kate Barrick, a Heartbreakers Hall of Famer 1999-2002). Congratulations, Erin!

3B/SS/C/OF Amy Metcalfe signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her softball and academic career at DI Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. Amy becomes the 8th Heartbreakers player to join the Gaels softball program since 2000. Iona is coached by 2nd year coach Jaime Wohlbach. Amy will graduate from Westminster High School in June. Congratulations, Amy!!

Wyatt Signs with Lock Haven
Heartbreakers Red 2B Taylor Wyatt signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and softball career at DII Lock Haven University in Lock Haven, PA. Taylor will graduate from Damascus High School in June of 2009. Taylor is the second HB player to play for Coach Kelley Green at Lock Haven as HB Hall of Fame Catcher Janet Paterson played for the Screamin' Eagles from 2002-2005. Congratulations, Taylor!!

Christman Signs with Saint Joseph's University
C/3B Rochelle Christman signed a National Letter of Intent to continue her softball and academic career at DI Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA. Rochelle will graduate from Greencastle Antrim High School in June. She received a full scholarship to play for Coach Terri Adams. Saint Joseph's is a member of the Atlantic 10 conference and placed 4th in the league last year. Rochelle is playing in her second season with the Heartbreakers. She will join Heartbreakers teammate Taryn Ashway as freshmen next year. Congratulations, Chris!

Ashway Signs With Saint Joseph's University
P/1B Taryn Ashway signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA, and continue her softball career at the NCAA DI level. She received a full scholarship. Taryn will graduate from Waynesboro High School in June and join teammate Rochelle Christman at Saint Joseph's as part of the 2010 freshmen class. Taryn is playing her 4th year with the Heartbreakers. Congratulations, Taryn!
