Maroons Earn 20th Win in 2 Day Gerken Tourney
In preparation for the MHSAA Districts, Holland Christian participated in the annual Jimmy Gerken Invitational, hosted by East Grand Rapids, over the Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. Participating for the third consecutive year, HC began play on Friday traveling to the second ranked Eagles of Grand Rapids Christian. The Eagles were able to take advantage of their home field advantage pulling out to an early 2-0 advantage before the Maroons struck on an RBI single by Tim Boetsma to cut the score to 2-1. GRC added three more runs in the fourth inning and that was where the scoring stayed until the seventh inning as the Maroons struck for three runs to make it 5-4. With the tying run on second base, the Eagles were able to escape the jam and win the game with a groundout to seal the victory. Off the loss, Holland Christian returned to play on Saturday morning taking on Catholic Central at Forest Hills Central and despite strong pitching effort from sophomore Nick Hill, the maroon and white became their own worst enemy. Allowing the Cougars several opportunities due to errors, HC found themselves quickly out of the game but were sparked by the play of recent callups Max Wierda and Brandon Roon as Wierda laced a 2 RBI single and Roon earned his first varsity hit later in the same inning. Even with their efforts, Holland Christian could not overcome their miscues as they fell 13-3. In the third and final game of the tournament, HC traveled to FHC’s freshmen field and met rival Unity Christian. Seeking their twentieth victory of the year, Holland Christian got out of the gate strongly as they leapt into the lead behind the bat of senior Luke Brower. Behind Brower’s early double and triple, HC claimed a four run lead by the fourth inning. Unity would plate single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth but they could not manage to strike for more than that. A big RBI double by senior Jacob Hilbrand pushed the game out of range for HC as they won the game 7-3 behind the complete game effort of Landon Brower. With the win, Holland Christian won their 20th game of the season for just the eighth time in school history and the seventh in the last nine years. Now the Maroons will ready for District play as they host Wyoming Park on Saturday, June 2, at 12:00 p.m. in the semi-finals of the MHSAA District.
