The Senators Will be Relocating to John Champe High School Beginning in 2013

The Haymarket Senators Baseball Team will be relocating to John Champe High School in Aldie, Virginia starting with the 2013 season.  The Senators will remain in the Valley Baseball League as a member of the Northern Division.

While the Senators have had success at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, the managing partners of Blue Ridge Baseball believe the relocation will provide for an increase in attendance, sponsors, host families, and community involvement.

We would like to thank all those in the Haymarket area that volunteered and sponsored the Senators over the past 6 seasons for their support.

We would also like to thank Battlefield High School, their athletic department and booster club for their unwavering support of the Haymarket Senators

The Senators will remain the "Senators" so Nators Nation can continue, however, the geographic name will be something other than Haymarket, and is yet to be determined.

The Senators have full support of the athletic department and baseball program at John Champe, who are very excited about having the Senators join the community.

Directions to John Champe HS Baseball Stadium: From Points West - Take I66 East to Exit 40. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto Rt 15 North. Follow Rt 15N for 5 miles and turn right onto Rt 234 (at the 7-11). Follow Rt 234 for 5 miles and take a left onto Gum Spring Rd. Follow Gum Spring Rd for 4.7 miles and take a left onto Braddock Rd. Follow Braddock Rd for 1 mile and take a right onto Northstar Blvd. Field is on left, turn at first entrance into school.

There will be a Senators Board meeting in early September. We invite all those who are interested in joining the Senators Board for the 2013 season to attend.  More information on the meeting and a date will be forthcoming.

Josh Radford, Ultimate Utility Man

By Joe "Haymarket Joe" Cashwell

HAYMARKET - On Thursday night, in the Haymarket Senators regular season finale, the Senators used the occasion for a history-making event for one of their players.

Josh Radford, a rising junior at UVA-Wise, played all nine positions in the Senators 12-5 loss to Front Royal.

Radford played one position per inning, starting in leftfield and finishing on the mound.

During the game, he had four putouts and one assist. On the mound, he allowed one run on four walks but did not allow a hit.

With Haymarket having clinched a playoff berth the previous evening and a first round matchup against Woodstock assured, Senators skipper Justin Aspegren felt the regular season finale was the perfect place to have Radford play all nine positions.

Calling Radford 'an excellent teammate', Aspegren wanted to see Radford accomplish a feat done only four times at the major league level and last done during the 2000 season.

It is thought to be the first time this has happened in the VBL in the past four years.

"I thought this would be a way to have a lot of fun during the game without disrespecting the game or turning it into a circus," Aspegren said.

"It is one of the more classic ways to have fun at the back end of a season. It was a fun thing for the team to watch, and it was a blast for Josh as well."

Radford is an outfielder/pitcher for the Highland Cavaliers during the collegiate season, but has played primarily in the outfield for Haymarket.

"Every position is different and I had to approach it with that mindset," Radford said. "In the outfield, you take your first step back, track the ball and get under it. In the infield, the mindset has to be to stay down on the ball and not let it get past you."

Against the Cards, Radford caught fly balls for outs in all three outfield positions as well as having to chase down a David Atwood double in the third.

His final putout came while playing first base and being the backend of a 6-3 groundout by Atwood.

In the eighth, Radford got behind the plate for his first catching experience of the summer. In addition to donning the equipment for the first time, Mother Nature decided to throw a fast ball of her own in the form of a wind squall that sent the infield dirt flying right into his face and scattering the fans sitting in the bleachers behind home plate.

"Dirt was flying everywhere, but you had to keep your eyes open or else you'd never see the ball," Radford said.

In the final inning, Radford took to the mound as rain that followed the wind at catcher started to fall. After taking some warm-ups in the bullpen, he took to the mound to try and finish out the contest.

Unfortunately, the landing hole was for someone about 6'4" which presented an issue for the 5-foot-11 Radford. "You have to adjust to the field and the mound that you play on," Radford commented.

Despite the loss, Radford had an experience he will remember for lifetime. Seeing as how the Valley Baseball League is called the "Gateway to the Majors", Radford hopes to match the feats of Bert Campaneris (Kansas City Athletics on September 8, 1965), Cesar Tovar (Minnesota Twins on September 22, 1968), Scott Sheldon (Texas Rangers on September 6, 2000) and Shane Halter (Detroit Tigers on October 1, 2000) and play all nine positions as an MLB player.

The Haymarket Senators would like to thank the following people for sponsoring the Senators 2012 Hit-A-Thon.  Because of the generousity of these supporters, the Senators were able to raise nearly $5,600.

Thank You to:

Addison Smith, Angie Vdokakes, Ann & Doug Gunderson, The Balkwill Family, Brent54, Brian & Michelle Able, Brittany Manning, The Burdick Family, Cameron O'Conner, Dan McQueen, Elcon, The Ferrick Family, Grace & Donovan Newell, Greg Roukis, Haymarket Joe, Jan & Ron Able, Jane & David Mullen, Jayme Newell, Katelyn Power, Kent & Amy Stainback, Kristin Everett, Laura & Jeff Abramson, Margaret Vdokakes, Margie & Manny Vdokakes, Maureen O'Conner, Murray Bell, The Newell Partnership Group, Pardus Inc, The Pew Trust, Rita Schaffler, The Karas Family, Sam Slowinski, Robin & Bernie Schaffler, Scott Schaffler, Sean Morris, The Feight Family and The Mancari Family.

The Haymarket Senators are a member of the Valley Baseball League (VBL), a summer collegiate wooden bat baseball league made up of teams from the Shenandoah Region of Virginia.  The VBL has been supported, in part, by a grant from Major League Baseball for over 25 years.  In 2010, MLB made it a requirement, as part of its grant eligibility criteria, that all recipients are IRS qualified 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organizations.  To adhere to this, and remain a member of the VBL, the ownership group of the Haymarket Senators donated the Senators Baseball Operations to Blue Ridge Baseball Inc., an established 501(c)(3) that’s charter supports amateur baseball and softball in the greater Loudoun and Prince William Counties.  Consequently, the folks you see at each and every home game are either volunteers, interns or managing partners of the non-for-profit organization, and all operations are supported solely by operational revenue, donations, and fundraising.

If you are interested in joining our Team of Directors please contact the Senators at haymarketsenators@hotmail.com.
