Bill Rhine 1949-2011
On July 26, 2011, our community lost Bill Rhine, one of the founders of Haven Youth Lacrosse. Bill was born and raised in Baltimore, where he developed a passion for lacrosse. He played at Drexel University and later settled in Swarthmore. Bill was one of the founders and first directors of the Haven program.  He was an administrator, recruiter, equipment manager, grass cutter, field liner, chauffeur, treasurer and coach for over ten years.  Bill's only agenda was to promote lacrosse for kids in our school district. He was a key figure in getting men's lacrosse sanctioned as a varsity sport at Strath Haven High School. Bill will be sorely missed by all.

A note to boys considering trying lacrosse for the first time….

1.       New Players:  In the past, new players have occasionally expressed some reservations and/or hesitation in giving lacrosse a try because they were concerned other players may have more advanced skills and it would be hard to catch up to them.   When those new players took the leap of faith and gave lacrosse a try, they generally found that the skills and confidence they have from other sports (soccer, football, basketball, ice hockey, baseball, etc.) …such as hand/eye coordination, running, moving with and without the ball, positioning on offense and defense, teamwork, hustle, etc. - carry over onto the lacrosse field.  These players are amazed to find how quickly they pick up the game of lacrosse and how much fun it is, and how it helps them in their other sports as well.  The also realize that just like practicing any other sport (i.e. practicing foul shots in basketball, juggling a soccer ball, taking batting practice, etc), if they spend a little time on their lacrosse stickwork, the amount of fun they have increases dramatically.  In other words, it is awesome to watch how quickly new players pick up the game and have a great time doing so.  If you asked any Haven kid who gave lacrosse a try in grades 1-8, you would be hard pressed to find any who regretted doing so…

2.       Loaner Gear:  HYL has limited supplies of loaner gear that may be available for players to borrow for the indoor sessions and the season – please contact Kevin Clifton clifksc@comcast.net.  Finally, as an indication of good faith and investment in the future of Haven Lax, HYL has a policy where the program will purchase equipment back from a new player (at 50% off the receipted purchase price within one year of purchase) if the player tries lacrosse and decides not to continue playing (that gear will be added to the future stock of loaner gear).

We hope this information is helpful and we are happy to answer any questions you may have.
