South Africa and New Zealand to Play Two Matches
In an effort to show that there are no hard feelings over the World Cup 2006 location. South Africa had fought to have the games in their country, but lost out to Germany when New Zealander Charlie Dempsey voted against the African nation. Danny Jordaan, the chief executive of football in South Africa has met with New Zealand officials to show that no ill-will exists. Fifa President Sepp
Blatter was said to be pleased with the reconciliation.
US Women's Olympic Team Named
When April Heinrichs took over the helm as coach of the US women's team, there was a feeling among some of the veteran players that they may be phased out in favor of younger players. This did not prove to be true as fifteen of the twenty players who won the gold medal will be returning to the US Olympic team.
Some of the veteran players who made the team were surprised to be included. Michelle Akers and Carla Overbeck made the team in spite of the injuries sustained over the past year.
The biggest change will be coming at keeper as Siri Mullinix assumes the starting role over Olympic hero Brianna Scurry. Beside Mullinix, the other new players will be Nikki Serlenga and Danielle Slaton.
The first test comes this Sunday in Annapolis, as the US meets Russia in the first game of a three game Olympic tour.
Three DC United Players named to US team
US team coach Bruce Arena named three DC United players to the team, for the upcoming qualifying round match. Jeff Agoos, Eddie Pope (pictured), and Carlos Llamosa will be on hand in a crucial match with Barbados next week
US Men's Soccer: History on their Side
Tomorrow's game with Barbados can be termed to be crucial, as the US continues in the qualifying round for the World Cup. They need victories as they are in last place in their division, and only the first two teams can move on.
The bright spot: Barbados is considered the weakest team in the group, and the US has lost only one qualifying game on US soil.
Another plus: the return of Joe-Max Moore, a leading scorer for the Everton team in the English premier league. Moore missed the first two games of the qualifying round.
Costa Rica leads the division.
