Boys Baseball

HLBSA has a variety of established baseball programs designed to provide instruction and skill advancement for players of all ages & abilities. The Junior Baseball program focuses on players from ages 7 through 12, while the Senior program works with those 13 and over. As players move from Clinic through the older age groups, they will be instructed on the fundamentals and rules of the game. In addition to skills development, sportsmanship and the enjoyment of participation will be emphasized at all levels. It is our policy to provide equal access to all players interested in participating in the program.

In-House Programs
The HLBSA In-House Baseball Program offers players of all abilities the opportunity to participate locally. In-House program will stress the rules and fundamentals of baseball in a competitive and fun environment. Each player on the team will be guaranteed a minimum number of innings in the field and will bat in every game. After skills assessment sessions, a blind draft will be used to create teams of equal talent. Coaches will provide instruction to all players at a level commensurate with their ability and understanding of the game.

Clinic (Co-Ed) Ages thru 7
Our focus is to introduce boys and girls to the basics of the game -- hitting a pitched ball, base running, and fundamental defensive play. While sessions are non-competitive, establishing essential skills early helps improve a player's performance at the next level.

Rookie League Ages 7 & 8
Coaches will focus on individual skill improvement. At this level, players will start to pitch. Players will be introduced to competition at this level, although the main focus remains on skills development and having fun. Play is designed to give the player every opportunity to develop their pitching, fielding and hitting skills.

Minor League Ages 9 & 10
In addition to individual skills development, team strategies will be introduced at this level - the game played will resemble the "true" game of baseball. While there's an increased emphasis on competition, the primary objective continues to be the development of skills, knowledge, and enjoyment through participation.

Major League Ages 11 & 12
At this level, most players have gained a good knowledge of the game and have developed the fundamental skills needed. Coaches continue to develop individual skills and advanced team strategies. Players at this level will refine their skills in preparation for the Senior Baseball program.

Senior League Ages 13 & up
Players at the Senior level begin to understand the subtleties of the team game and have the chance to develop their skills into a total offensive/defensive package. Coaches are aware that some players may want to advance into high school programs and will coordinate their teaching methods with those practiced at schools in the local area.

Travel Programs
HLBSA sponsors teams to play in the Central Maryland Travel League and the Mid-Atlantic Baseball Association. Travel ball offers an instruction and competitive play against teams from other regional programs. Players will be selected based on an extensive evaluation in a "tryout" format. A large interest may permit forming both "A" and "B" teams at a given age level. Participation on previous years' travel teams does not guarantee a spot on this year's roster. Players and parents alike are asked to make a strong commitment to their team, and there is an additional charge if selected.
The Sunday Travel Program offers players the opportunity to play in an advanced format. Games are held Sunday afternoons, with additional practices conducted during the week. Sunday Travel team members must also participate in an in-house program. In offering the Open Travel program, the in-house participation requirement is eliminated - players can expect an extensive schedule, averaging 3-4 games per week.
As in years past, we expect to field competitive Sunday and Open travel teams at many age levels, from 8 & under through 15-17. Please check the "Travel" box on the registration form, or call the league for more information.
