COLUMN: SACRED ISIS FAVORS THE BARNCATS Cleopatra VII, Queen of the Nile, favored by Julius Caesar and later enchantress of Mark Antony, was the last of the Ptolemy Dynasty established by Alexander the Great after his conquest of Egypt, which endured for nearly 300 years until the Battle of Actium in 30 BC, an encounter that decided the fate of Rome and Egypt (for better and worse), and set the course of western civilization for millennium. The Ptolemies over those centuries only knew their native Greek save Cleopatra who also emersed herself in Egyptian religion, culture, and language to better understand and communicate with her subjects. She conveniently adopted Egyptian gods, and in particular emulated characteristics of the goddess Isis. Of the ancient Egyptian gods, none was more all-powerful and all-knowing than Isis who dominated earth and heavens reflected in an image of a sacred cat. Even Amun-Re the sun god who would race his chariot across the skies daily and rest in the evenings; his path inevitably went through Isis' realm at her discretion. In ancient Egypt, Isis' messenger and representative to mankind was her son Horus symbolized by a hawk or falcon, a frequent decoration found in hieroglyphics on pyramids and obelisks. Even pharaohs considered themselves the embodiment of Horus, and they were often depicted as a hawk attached to a decorated human form. Horus would see all and report to Isis. Wherever Horus the hawk was present, the goddess knew what was occurring, and through him she was in contact and control of earthly endeavors. On Sunday afternoon, August 30, 2009 (the month named by Augustus Caesar), Langley Field in northern Virginia was under the watchful eye of Horus. The Montgomery County BarnCats became goddesses of the diamond and contemporary representatives of sacred Isis. For on that afternoon, these Cats made few mistakes, played exceptionally hard, were typically well-coached, and with cat-like precision and quickness pranced on to a deserved victory. The Cats displayed solid performance throughout the game with traditional contestant the Virginia Flames. During the course of the afternoon, they steadily accumulated a symbolic total of 9 runs. Utilizing three Cats pitchers; the starter was also the finisher, all-star Robin Gelman, transitioning from Alpha to Omega. Opposing Flames bats never ignited throughout most of the game accounting for only 1 run until the last two innings. And, who was watching this epoch episode unfold? A hawk, the embodiment of Horus, was enmeshed in netting on the BarnCats side of the field throughout most of the game. Once freed, the Flames could come alive, however it was too little and too late. As several earth-bound players observed, circling above the field, the hawk watched the remainder of the contest to the last inning ensuring a BarnCats victory of 9-7. Afterwards, he ascended to report the final results to the most sacred of all cats.
