COLUMN: 2008 NOMINATIONS FOR INDUCTION NWB HALL OF FAME Two candidates were nominated for 2008 induction into the NWB Hall of Fame. Applications and statements were due September 30, and ballots are being distributed today to the National Selection Committee with responses requested by Monday, October 6. Induction requires 75% approval of those returning ballots. Procedures and requirements are outlined on the website (see navigation bar "Form-Induct"). The 2008 nominations are: Rosie Anderson Weaver, Virginia Flames, submitted by JoAnn Milliken, Virginia Flames Manager, and Commissioner, Eastern Women's Baseball Conference; and Melissa Gibbons, Blue Crush, Philadelphia Women's Baseball League (PWBL), submitted by Narda Quigley, PWBL organizer. Rosie Anderson Weaver pitcher, infielder, and catcher Virginia Flames, 2000-current Rosie began as a catcher for the Flames in 2000, and earned the role of starting pitcher in the 2005 season. When not on the mound, she contributed to the Flames highly effective defense by covering any infield position. This season she pitched about 40% of the innings, and compiled a 6-0 record with a 2.96 ERA (based upon 7 inning games). In four seasons pitching, 2005-2008, she consistently had an ERA around 3.00. In 2005, she pitched 60% of the innings, compiled a 7-1 record, and earned the Flames MVP. Said JoAnn Milliken, "Her skills have been instrumental in the Flames record of six consecutive EWBC championships." Milliken also noted, "She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet, and she brings an infectious smile and an endearing attitude to every game." "Flamin', Throwin', Cracklin' Rosie," Volume VIII, Number 29, December 5, 2005 NWB/HoF 2005 MVP Award Melissa Gibbons team captain, pitcher, shortstop Phoenixville Blue Crush, 2004-current New Jersey Nemesis, 1999-2001 New Jersey Diamonds, 1998 Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia) Pride, 1994-1998 Mel began playing baseball at age 6, and by age 10 she had a 50 mph fastball which won her respect and games. Her abilities continued to improve throughout high school and college. She played semi-professional baseball with the Mid-Atlantic (Philadelphia) Pride and New Jersey Diamonds. Later when Narda Quigley organized the Philadelphia Women's Baseball League in 2004, she asked Gibbons to form a new team as Captain of the Blue Crush. Said Quigley about this nomination, "She is a talented player, a dedicated member of the PWBL, and a wonderful, deserving person. She has made baseball a priority throughout her life..." NWB HALL OF FAME PROGRAMS The National Women's Baseball Hall of Fame, an independent not-for-profit organization established September 1998, is situated in suburban Washington, DC. The objective is to recognize achievements of women in regulation baseball. The NWB Hall of Fame offers these programs for participants in regulation baseball with organized leagues. Managers are are encouraged to recommend recognition awards and suggest articles on their teams, players, or events. Applications are available through email and are posted on the website. NWB HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS Nominations for the NWB Hall of Fame are due September 30. Inductions may include four current and one previous players by formal application or candidate statement. NATIONAL MVP AND MANAGER AWARDS MVP player and manager award requests are due December 31. Season nominations should be by a manager or administrator. One MVP player per team may be selected annually. Membership covers transmission of newsletters, announcements, invitations, applications, and access to all website pages.
