COLUMN: RANISZEWSKI RAPS MORE RUNS As reported earlier this week, Kris "Lefty" Raniszewski was approved in October for induction into the NWB Hall of Fame representing the 25th player to be so recognized since the program's inception in 1998. First inductions were in October 1999 (see masthead names listed above). Prior to public and website announcements, Raniszewski was informed of her election by email and formal letter. As is customary, new Hall of Famers are immediately sent a commemorative plaque and memorabilia items, which arrived in Michigan last Monday. Raniszewski's nomination was unanimously approved by the national selection committee based upon her many years of accomplishments in organized regulation women's baseball. The committee consists of women newspaper columnists and members of the NWB Hall of Fame who decide to participate. At least 75% approval is required for annual induction. The following comments were received from Raniszewski once she was informed of the committee's decision. >I received your beautiful plaque and pins and green ribbon, >thank you so much for your recognition of me as a baseball >player. I've played for many years expecting nothing really >other than my pure enjoyment of playing our beloved game. > >Baseball has been so good to me, it helped me realize the >person I truly am, allowed me to forget all the worries of >the day, allowed me to share my love of the game with my >fellow teammates. I have lifelong friends thanks to baseball, >it's even where I met the man that would one day be my husband! > >I used to watch him umpire games, and one day he umped the >game I was playing in, playing first base, I stretched and >he called the girl safe! I began to playfully kick dirt on >him and he asked me out after the game! We had a blast, and >we were married 1 year later. Baseball has always been a part >of my life so why not have it pick out my husband! > >Thank you again for your interest in me the ballplayer and >the person baseball has blessed. I continue to play this very >special part of my life. Now I will take the field knowing >all my years in the game have meant something to others, and >to you I graciously tip my hat in sincere gratitude. > Raniszewski's induction into the NWB Hall of Fame was featured in the Detroit Free Press on October 16, 2007, the largest and oldest daily in the Detroit metropolitan area. Said Raniszewski about the press coverage, "I can't believe my induction announcement made the local Detroit newspaper! Thank you for sending me the story. I am still on a cloud!" Raniszewski, a Michigan native originally from Berkley, played for the Michigan Stars in Lansing from 1996-1998, and currently resides in Newport (south of Detroit). She has contributed her skills to Detroit teams since the 2000 season (see below). Kris "Lefty" Raniszewski, #23 pitcher, first base, and third base Detroit Danger, 2000-2005, and 2007 Detroit Diesel, 2006 Michigan Stars, 1996-1998 In a 2005 interview, NWB Hall of Famer Carol Sheldon (2003) with Detroit Danger indicated that Kris Raniszewski is one of the most proficient players in women's baseball. She also mentioned NWB Hall of Famer Charlene Wright (1999). The following was stated about Kris Raniszewski in Fame Forum, Volume X, Number 30, October 2, 2007. "Well known in the Great Lakes Women's Baseball League as an accurate and durable pitcher, she has, '...an outstanding fastball that she will bust inside on one pitch, then she will have the next pitch bite the outside corner.' At the plate, her nomination statement noted, 'As a hitter, Kris hits with power to all fields.'" An action photo of Kris Raniszewski on the mound pitching at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing is featured on the NWB Hall of Fame home page. Pictures of all NWB Hall of Famers 1999-2007 are in the Photo Pages section. NWB Hall of Fame http://www.eteamz.com/hallfame B.
