COLUMN: 2007 NWB HALL OF FAME INDUCTION "RANISZEWSKI RUNS RAMPANT" Kris "Lefty" Raniszewski, Detroit Danger pitcher and infielder, was unanimously elected this October for induction into the NWB Hall of Fame. She joins twenty-four present and previous women baseball players (see masthead names listed above) from teams around the country who have been similarly recognized over the past nine years. Said John Raniszewski, a Danger coach, "She really deserves this honor after her years of playing baseball. Thanks to you and all the members of the selection committee!" Raniszewski also provided several photos of "Lefty" in action, including her pitching as a Michigan Star at Oldsmobile Park, Lansing, MI in 1997. This picture is posted on the home page of the NWB Hall of Fame, and photos of all Famers since 1999 are in the Photo Pages (see website). http://www.eteamz.com/hallfame/albums The following was stated about Kris Raniszewski in Fame Forum, Volume X, Number 30, October 2, 2007. "Well known in the Great Lakes Women's Baseball League as an accurate and durable pitcher, she has, '...an outstanding fastball that she will bust inside on one pitch, then she will have the next pitch bite the outside corner.' At the plate, her nomination statement noted, 'As a hitter, Kris hits with power to all fields.'" Kris "Lefty" Raniszewski, #23 pitcher, first base, and third base Detroit Danger, 2000-2005, and 2007 Detroit Diesel, 2006 Michigan Stars, 1996-1998 An email version of Raniszewski's two page nomination statement from her application may be provided upon request. Annual induction requires candidates to possess exceptional baseball skills, participate 3 years in organized regulation women's baseball, and receive 75% approval from the national selection committee. The committee consists of women newspaper columnists and members of the NWB Hall of Fame. Nominations each year are due September 30 with balloting occurring during the first week of October. Sponsors submitting nominations are informed of results prior to the public announcement. The NWB Hall of Fame was established in September 1998, and first inductions occurred in October 1999. In that year, two players were selected: Claire Schillace, Racine Belles, AAGPBL; and Charlene Wright, New Jersey Nemesis. Thus far, twenty-five of twenty-seven nominations have been approved by the national selection committee. For names, teams, dates, articles, and pictures of all players inducted into the NWB Hall of Fame, 1999-2007, please see the website which has more details. http://www.eteamz.com/hallfame "ADDITIONAL 2007 CANDIDATE" This year there were two candidates for induction into the NWB Hall of Fame. Often there are three or four candidates, and in 2003 there were five nominations. The two 2007 nominations were: Kris Raniszewski, Detroit Danger, submitted by John Raniszewski, Assistant Coach, Detroit Danger; and Lisa Scott, Montgomery County, Maryland, BarnCats, submitted by Richard Bender, Coach, Montgomery County, Maryland, BarnCats. Although Lisa Scott received a majority of the votes cast by the committee, she did not obtain the required 75% approval. As reported in the October 2 issue cited above, the following was stated about Lisa Scott in Fame Forum. "A consistent performer for the BarnCats since its inception in 1992, she has, '...played any position she has been asked to play and done it well.' The nomination statement noted, 'Her contributions to the team have always been positive while taking direction well and keeping a mindset towards individual and teammate improvement.'" Lisa Scott, #11 utility player all positions Montgomery County BarnCats, 1992-2007 Committee members noted there was insufficient information provided in the application (submitted on August 30), which contained only five sentences in support of the nomination, and was lacking dates, stats, and events, etc. Although when received more was requested, however after the September 30 due date, the committee was mailed information as submitted. By comparison, Coach Raniszewski submitted a more detailed application (7 pages) with a two page justification statement and five photos. The following was noted in a summary letter to Coach Bender. > >Balloting was completed October 8, 2007 for this >year's induction into the NWB Hall of Fame. > >Although Lisa Scott received a majority of votes, >she did not obtain the necessary 75% required. > >This is no reflection upon Lisa, but rather the >information provided about her was insufficient. >The consensus was that five sentences were not >enough to support approval of a nomination. > >When the nomination was received August 30, 2007, >more information was requested at that time. > >Over the past ten seasons, I note that several >prominent BarnCats are in the NWB Hall of Fame >including Sandy Triolo, Diane Sweeney, Renee Hudson, >and Kelly Ballentine. It is anticipated there >will be many more Cats so honored in the future. > As we know from experience in baseball, not every team or player each year is successful. But, in certain professional selection processes, e.g., passing the bar, licensing exams, or induction into various types of Halls of Fame; multiple candidates are successful and many preserve until approved. In addition to basic qualifying criteria noted above, selection into the NWB Hall of Fame necessitates excellent performance in hitting, fielding, and running; and exceptional traits in equally important but less quantifiable factors, such as, knowledge of the game, and support for teammates. In this selection process, performance and experience are expressed through the materials submitted as judged relevant by the national selection committee. B.
