COLUMN: HAIL, HAIL THE FLAMES ARE HERE Many of the 2007 championship Virginia Flames players were present Saturday evening, November 10, in Alexandria, VA for the annual team awards ceremony and celebration. And, several members from other teams in the Eastern Women's Baseball Conference (EWBC) joined the festivities. The NWB Hall of Fame was represented and participated in the awards segment that evening to honor one of the most consistent and productive members of the Flames since the team's inception more than 15 years ago. Traditionally, at the annual Flames "team party" players are recognized for achievements during the recent season, e.g., best batting average, most improved fielder, and overall player performance. After the Flames player accolades were joyfully bestowed, a special award was presented by the NWB Hall of Fame to one member of the Flames whose contributions often prove invaluable to the success of the team. The nomination originated from JoAnn Milliken (see reference below). In typical modest fashion, the recipient after acceptance of the award plaque noted, "This could not be accomplished without all of you. You made this happen on the ball field (referring to Flames teammates and championships)." The Flames finished the 2007 season with a 13-1 record, and swept the playoffs at Marshall to earn the EWBC Championship. The following statement summarizes why Dave Fyfe of the Flames received the NWB Hall of Fame, Manager/Coach of the Year Award. Dave Fyfe Nomination Statement NWB Hall of Fame, Manager/Coach of the Year Award by JoAnn Milliken, General Manager, Virginia Flames Commissioner, Eastern Women's Baseball Conference "Dave Fyfe has coached the Virginia Flames since the team was created 15 years ago. In 2007, he led the Flames to their 5th consecutive championship and their 8th in 11 years. No other team manager in the league comes close to that record." "Dave played baseball as a youth, and has been an avid fan and aficionado of the game all his life. His love of the game and his in-depth knowledge make him and outstanding coach and manager." "With a doctorate degree in mathematics, Dave is also a statistics expert and enthusiast, and he often uses statistics to guide his decisions. But, the most valuable thing that Dave contributes is his time. He provides year-round instruction through indoor workouts during the winter, and outdoor practices in the spring and summer. The Flames have never had a losing season, and that is due to Dave's leadership, hard work, and capability as a manager and coach." In a prior NWB Hall of Fame award citation statement during 2004, Milliken noted, "Dave's knowledge of and enthusiasm for the game, together with baseball skills he developed as a youth, have enabled the Flames to take their skills to the next level." Congratulations to Dave Fyfe, JoAnn Milliken, and all the Flames for a highly rewarding season. "Hail, Hail the Flames Are Here" "See how those clouds melt away, from the sky when Flames shine, the field's brightness beaming." "Discard all their street robes, don uniform colors of the team, on beauty brilliances gleaming." "So, let's be off to play! Lift your hammers (bats)! Who may turn a bland day, into the bright sunshine? Only a lovely gypsy maid! (chorus) "Hail, hail the Flames are here. When's the game is all we care. When's the game is all we care. Hail, hail we're full of cheer. Where's the diamond today Dave!" Derived from: "Il Trovatore" by Guiseppe Verdi, 1853, the song "Coro di Zingari" Gypsy Chorus or Anvil Chorus; also in "Pirates of Penzance" by Gilbert and Sullivan, 1879; and modifications since in numerous renditions.
