COLUMN: DE STELLA NOVA DOCTORIA LAURA "Faster than a spinning pulsar, more powerful than unified force, able to bend light into singularity." "Look! Up in the sky! There is... a projected white spinning sphere, which encountered opposing energy. Trajectory is reversed on contact, an obitual path is navigated that mathematically adjusted the score." What was that driving source where only trailing Flames of cosmic dust and vapor elucidated a former presence? Is there further evidence which may directly assist in defining her signature? How has she been honored with recognition in both athletic and academic endeavors? Some might reference her Hall of Fame induction from October 2005. Others might proclaim participation as a Virginia Flames player since 2004 and with Team USA from 2002. These encounters are admirable avocations where she accumulated considerable accomplishments. Recently, however, she obtained another achievement beyond those accolades representing something to be appreciated throughout a future career and lifetime. These brief notations are, of course, in reference to Dr. Laura Brenneman, who defended her dissertation in AstroPhysics in August 2007, and advanced to receive her doctoral degree from the University of Maryland at College Park. Congratulations! Note: Recognition is based upon such completion. Primarily for undergraduates, UMCP Winter Commencement campus-wide is December 19 at Comsat Center. College recognition ceremonies are December 20 (CMPS: Computer, Mathematical, and Physical Sciences is at Smith Performing Arts Center). NWB Hall of Famers already with similar advance degrees include: Dr. JoAnn Milliken, PhD; Dr. Diane Sweeney, MD; and Dr. Veronica Geyer, PhD. The research topic for Laura Brenneman concerns measurement of galactic black holes, unseen phenomena represented by the collapse of a major star to a super-dense point where gravitation attraction is of such great magnitude that not even light can escape its influence. Thus, detection and measurement are accomplished through mathematical modeling and X-ray determinants of its effects. The following abstract provides some idea of Dr. Brenneman's research interest. Smithsonian Abstract Service Re: "First Constraints on Black Hole Spin in Broad Iron Line AGN" Brenneman, Laura, University of Maryland, College Park Fr: American Astronomical Society, 2007 AAS Meeting Bulletin, Volume 38, page 903. Abstract "Black holes are arguably the simplest objects in nature with an ability to be completely defined by two mathematical quantities: mass and spin." "Spin, being a general relativistic effect, is the more difficult to discern of the two. One of the most promising and methods for constraining this quantity relies on modeling the altered shape of the iron-K line emitted from the accretion disk around the black hole. With this in mind, I have expanded upon previous emission line model codes to create a new relativistic emission line model, called 'kerrdisk,' which allows the black hole spin to be fitted as a free parameter." "This allows us to constrain the angular momentum of a black hole for the first time. Herein, I present results of spectral fitting of this model to several AGN with observed broad iron lines in an effort to perform the first statistically robust study of black hole spin distribution in these types of sources. This is a crucial first step toward taking a census of black hole spin in both AGN and GBHCs." He was first to describe the explosive final stage of a supernova, and perhaps the formation of a black hole. This explanation was also a challenge to the Aristotelian concept of an unchanging universe. His systematic approach to identifying stars without the use of a telescope (not invented yet) was so accurate that his charts replaced those of Ptolemy utilized for nearly 1,400 years. In a subsequent debate regarding mathematics, Tycho in a duel lost part of his nose, but that's another story. Hubble (visual) was deployed by Discovery in April 1990, and Chandra (X-ray) in July 1999 by Columbia. B. The objective is to recognize achievements of women in regulation baseball. The NWB Hall of Fame offers these programs for participants in regulation baseball with organized leagues. Managers are are encouraged to recommend recognition awards and suggest articles on their teams, players, or events. Applications are available through email and are posted on the website. NWB HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS Nominations for the NWB Hall of Fame are due September 30. Inductions may include four current and one previous players by formal application or candidate statement. NATIONAL MVP AND MANAGER AWARDS MVP player and manager award requests are due December 31. Season nominations should be by a manager or administrator. One MVP player per team may be selected annually. Membership covers transmission of newsletters, announcements, invitations, applications, and access to all website pages. Membership is $9.00 renewed annually, and an application is available on the NWB Hall of Fame website. _________________________________________________________ NATIONAL WOMEN'S BASEBALL HALL OF FAME Richard C.
