COLUMN: CLIFFORD'S HOMETOWN PARADE "Hey, you can't park here!" Clifford delightfully snapped enjoying his newly found authority directing holiday traffic in front of his favorite store. He knew cars would stop briefly to collect bags of supplies and goodies, but they simply could not stay any length of time. Clifford fully understood the meaning of "stay," and on this occasion it was to be cordially avoided. "Pick-ups only," were the instructions from the store's proprietor, and she mentioned cars might briefly stop to drop off discs and videos at the adjacent Block Buster or use the ATM at the neighboring Chevy Chase Bank, but he should make sure traffic flowed smoothly, and holiday shoppers had a pleasant experience at her plaza. "Plenty of spaces in the parking lot," Clifford advised while he directed traffic with his huge red paws, and simultaneously pointed with one of his long red ears, as only he can. "This is better than a three-ring circus," he laughed as Clifford thoroughly enjoyed every minute assisting people, watching the excitement of holiday shopping, and being the center of attention. Not only was Clifford providing a beneficial service for everyone outside the store, but also his famous presence was bringing customers inside. His reward, as promised, was selections of goodies from the doggie bakery and tokens for Rocky Gorge. He could not decide which was best, as he appreciated the moment. Among all the tumult, he saw out of the corner of his eye that Emily was approaching. This was getting even better, and he decided to pretend he didn't notice, and continued apparently preoccupied with his work. Emily, accustom to Clifford's tricks, understood his side glance and modified head-fake, and breezed right up to her favorite furry funny friend as if she didn't know what he was doing and opened the conversation with, "Hi big buddy! I've been looking all over for you. What's up?" She warmly smiled while he widely grinned, as only he can. "Well, I'm just helping out," he sheepishly replied, which was clearly evident as Clifford continued to direct traffic and talk to Emily. "I see," Emily sparkled. "No parades this year?" Already, Emily knew the answer, because she saw the Macy's catalog in his palatial doggie dwelling before walking to the store. He didn't reply. "Oh, cheer-up, don't be silly," Emily laughed to encourage her friend. "You're there nearly every year." Emily further reminded him, "And, for Easter you were at the White House." "I saw the 2006 list," Emily continued, "Macy's has Snoopy, Scooby Doo, Big Bird, Energizer Bunny, and Sponge Bob; they will be well represented in giant balloons, specialty units, and mobile floats." "My parade is right here this year," Clifford concluded, "and I'll see thousands of people over the next three days; not just for three hours on Thursday." "Did you know how Thanksgiving started?" this time it was Emily who asked the precursory question while her friend faithfully directed traffic. "It began with the Pilgrims in 1621 to give thanks for the autumn harvest," Clifford recalled from history class. "Well, that's why," Emily began, "it is a harvest festival with religious significance as well." "George Washington issued the nation's first Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in 1789. I have a copy of what he said," which she read. "Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the Beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; and that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of this country, previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal manifold mercies, and favorable interpositions of His providence, in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union and plenty which we have enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enabled to establish Constitutions of Government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted; for civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and in general, for all the great and various favors, which He has been pleased to conferred upon us." George Washington, President, United States of America Clifford was impressed, but continued with his vehicular duties. He was tempted to say "Amen," but he knew better than to interrupt Emily while she was on a roll. "It really didn't become an important annual holiday," Emily indicated, "until the late 1820's the result of a one-woman movement by Mrs. Sarah Josepha Hale the editor of Boston's 'Ladies Magazine.' For decades, her campaign in magazine and newspaper editorials, and in letters to governors and presidents, promoted Thanksgiving." "As a result of her exhausting efforts, finally President Abraham Lincoln issued a proclamation on October 3, 1863 to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday." "In addition to giving thanks, this was during the height of the Civil War, and such a national holiday and ceremony could be beneficial for the country." As true to form, and as Clifford expected, Emily had a copy of that statement. "The year that is drawing toward its close has been filed with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of almighty God." "In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and provide their aggressions, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict." "I do, therefore, invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea, and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens." Abraham Lincoln, President, United States of America "Well, what did you think, Clifford?" Emily inquired after she finished the second presidential proclamation. Clifford tactfully replied while still directing traffic, "One was like a prayer and the other like a truce." "Among other things," Emily reminded him, "holidays help unite America and create traditions. During Thanksgiving, many people travel to their hometowns to be with family and friends for feasts and festivities." Clifford smiled and agreed for he was happy to be staying home with Emily and her family this year, and not starring in Macy's parade. And, after Thanksgiving dinner, he was planning to use his newly earned tokens in the batting cages at Rocky Gorge, which are open all year long providing the weather cooperates. Clifford knew something about baseball and weather, again thanks to his best friend Emily.
