COLUMN: CLIFFORD CARRIES THE FLAG "Clifford, Clifford, what are you doing up so early on a Friday morning?" a sleepy Emily curiously mumbled as she dutifully stumbled into the backyard wearing her slippers, night shirt and cap, to check on the activities of her faithful furry friend. "It's not even 3:00 AM." "Gotta get downtown," Clifford politely responded above a whisper. "Didn't mean to wake you. Go back to sleep." "Do you think you could sneak out of your doggie domain without me knowing? Ha!" Emily was quickly returning to her normal state of alertness. "I'm like your mother!" Clifford smiled, and put on a huge brand new knapsack, which looked like giant saddle bags. "And, just what are those?" Emily pointed in surprise. "I need them this morning," he explained. "I'm reporting to the Fort Myer Gate at exactly 3:45 AM. They need me." Emily knew this was Memorial Day weekend, and ever since 1948 the Old Guard Third Infantry stationed at Fort Myer turned out in battle dress at precisely 3:45 AM on the Friday of that weekend to place small American flags on every single gravesite in Arlington Cemetery. She could not be upset with Clifford for engaging in this patriotic endeavor. And, the new saddle bags were blue with white straps, appropriate colors in conjunction with Clifford's bright red coat. He looked the part. "I can carry hundreds of flags to be placed on gravesites by the soldiers," Clifford further explained. "It'll save them considerable time. Since 1864, there are more than 300,000 so honored by placement in Arlington. Everyone is remembered with a flag, and this must be accomplished by 8:00 AM before the cemetery opens. I'll have plenty to do this morning." "The first Memorial Day or Decoration Day commemoration at Arlington was held May 30, 1868. There was a proclamation," which Clifford noted. "'Let us, then, at the time appointed, gather around their sacred remains, and garland the passionless mounds above them with choicest flowers of springtime; let us raise above them the dear old flag they saved; let us in this solemn presence renew our pledge to aid and to assist those whom they have left among us a sacred charge upon the Nation's gratitude, --the soldier's and sailor's widow and orphan.'" "So, I'm off to help carry the flags to all those resting at Arlington," Clifford respectfully summarized. "OK, I understand," Emily concurred. "And, the saddle bags, I assume are from the Pet Barn." "The proprietor ordered them for me from a manufacturer of horse supplies, which are pets, too. And, the colors were my own idea, the same as the flag." "All flags, even at ballparks, are flown at half-mast on Memorial Day," Emily quietly observed. "When raised at dawn, they are drawn to the top of the flagpole, and then lowered to half-mast until 12:00 noon." "At 8:00 AM Arlington opens this morning, and by then all the flag placements should be completed," Clifford called as he trotted out the backyard on his honorable mission. "Meet me at the visitor's entrance." Emily smiled and waved at her patriotic canine companion, and decided to get the family's flag ready for the weekend. NWB HALL OF FAME PROGRAMS The National Women's Baseball Hall of Fame, an independent not-for-profit organization established September 1998, is situated in suburban Washington, DC. The objective is to recognize achievements of women in regulation baseball. The NWB Hall of Fame offers these programs for participants in regulation baseball with organized leagues. Managers are are encouraged to recommend recognition awards and suggest articles on their teams, players, or events. Applications are available through email and are posted on the website. NWB HALL OF FAME INDUCTIONS Nominations for the NWB Hall of Fame are due September 30. Inductions may include four current and one previous players by formal application or candidate statement. NATIONAL MVP AND MANAGER AWARDS MVP player and manager award requests are due December 31. Season nominations should be by a manager or administrator. One MVP player per team may be selected annually. Membership covers transmission of newsletters, announcements, invitations, applications, and access to all website pages.
