COLUMN: CLIFFORD'S FAVORITE STORE Emily knew every February 14th was a busy day for Clifford. He was not only occupied with many related responsibilities, but also he considered it equivalent to a national holiday, especially for a big red dog. In fact, this was so special, he was not to be found all day at his palatial doggie domain in Emily's backyard, but rather he was thoroughly engaged entertaining customers and friends at his favorite store, as only he can. So, the next morning, Friday, February 15th, Emily decided to allow her faithful furry companion to sleep late, and casually went to visit him after 10:00 AM. She was ready to have a little fun with Clifford in her opening remark as she entered his huge front door. "Beware the Ides of March!" she deliberately attempted to startle and surprise him. "Caesar's ear is turned to listen," he woofed and snapped, not to be taken unaware with an unexpected one-liner, and in typical doggie fashion he raised one long red flap in reply. "The Romans didn't celebrate Valentine's Day," he countered, "but had the Feast of Lupercal for about the same reasons at the same time each year." Clifford cleared his throat to sound more professorial and senatorial, "It was on that morning in 44 BC Julius Caesar was warned about his date with destiny one month later." "Very good, Clifford," Emily tried to interject, but her words blew right past him. Clifford was on a roll. "Act one, second scene, Julius Caesar," Clifford sparkled with more details, "begins with a soothsayer uttering that famous warning on February 15th predicting March 15th." Emily knew that Clifford appreciated Shakespeare, but this was too much. She laughed to herself, "Smartass dog!" but nevertheless allowed him to continue. "It was Cassius who brought the soothsayer from the crowded throng to address Caesar," Clifford delightfully continued. "John Gielgud played Cassius and Louis Calhern was Caesar in Mankiewicz's version." "Who was the soothsayer?" Emily attempted to slow his discourse. Clifford scratched his ear, as only he can, and wasn't quite certain, which momentarily quieted him down. Emily answered her own question. "Dick Hale in great makeup," she politely beamed, not to be upstaged by her raucous canine, but it all was in good fun. "And, I enjoyed Greer Garson as Calpurnia Caesar's wife, and Deborah Kerr as honorable Portia the wife of Brutus and daughter of Cato." Finally, Emily established some semblance of order in the doggie domain. She focused on the real purpose of her visit, "How was your day, yesterday!" "Valentine's Day is always wild at the Pet Barn," Clifford began his account. "You know that saying about #14, and the Doggie Bakery in particular received lots of attention. I was constantly entertaining her customers." "A big star attracts attention and generates purchases," Emily respectfully added. "But, it's the products and services which keep customers returning," Clifford barked. "I'm just the icing on the cake. And, this year I obtained testimonials from several visitors to the Pet Barn. Here's what they said..." Clifford retrieved a small notepad with actual remarks from customers about his favorite store. Tina: "An awesome shop! They have unique items there! It's like a Macy's for dogs. Also, it has small bakery items for dogs, and also have cat items as well." Elie: "Your pet's best friends are here! The folks at Pet Barn really love animals, and know how to help you take care of yours. The friendly, knowledgeable staff treat each customer (and pet) as an individual, helping to make Pet Barn a real antidote to the mega-stores with lots of things but no help." Karyn: "Pet Barn is a small boutique store for pet supplies. They carry a wonderful assortment of dog and cat treats, baked good, and toys. They also carry high quality cat and dog food as well as a line of organic food for birds and various small animals. They carry a nice selection of feeding dishes and collars for cats and dogs, and a number of supplies for other animals. This is a great store to buy your pet friend a gift." Dinesh: "This pet store is not that big, but it has all the things that are needed for the usual pets. There is ample parking for all pet store patrons, since it is in Burtonsville Crossing." Anonymous: "I love this pet store. It's the best pet store I've ever been in. They have a bakery for where they sell very nice treats for my dog. She loves, loves, loves them! They sell very good foods that are good for dogs, not like the kinds in the grocery store." Ivan: "Like most smaller pet shops, Pet Barn mostly has things for dogs, but they have a nice selection for cats, too. They carry most of the major brands, but also have a lot of the higher quality organic and all natural brands too." Anonymous: "This is a terrific pet store for dogs! They have a variety of very high quality foods, beautiful pet accessories, and fun toys. The owner, Kelly, is exceedingly knowledgeable, as well as friendly and helpful. We buy our dog's kibble at this store (Precise Brand). They don't have a website, so I've listed their contact information." Pet Barn, 15759 Columbia Pike, Burtonsville, MD 20866, 301-421-0005 "Those are nice comments," Emily remarked. "But, why so much interest in a pet store?" Clifford explained, "Well, the proprietor is in the NWB Hall of Fame, and was a star athlete at George Washington University. She received HoF induction in October 2001 and a national MVP award in October 1999, which was the same season the Pet Barn moved from Maryland Route 198 to Burtonsville Crossing, its current location." "Yes," Emily concurred, "and there have been twenty Clifford stories, and all of which referenced the Pet Barn in some manner at least once. Perhaps, that's another reason." Clifford just smiled, as only he can, and retrieved for Emily copies of previous stories which mentioned his favorite store! Note: The following issues of Fame Forum featured stories about Clifford.
