COLUMN: CLIFFORD'S FAVORITE VALENTINE "Oh, Clifford, I see another one of your favorite holidays is fast approaching," Emily delightfully observed as she walked into his spacious one-room house the floor of which was simply covered with red ribbons of many different sizes, heart shaped cut-outs, and an assortment of sundry cards. Clifford had a scissors in his paws, and he was carefully re-shaping red crepe paper. Several pieces of tape were randomly attached to Clifford's ears and tail, and there was a smattering of white paste that stood out prominently along the side of his nose, all of which he didn't seem to notice due to his preoccupation. "Yup!" Clifford woofed without looking up from his task of delicately trimming. He didn't want to make a mistake, and knew Emily would understand since it was she who had invaded his private doggie domain. "I'm making all my own cards this year," he added while carefully snipping away. "They'll have lots of hearts and red ribbons. My favorite color! Heh, heh, heh!" "I know, good buddy," Emily agreed. "You are being very creative, and it looks like you have enough material to mail cards to every canine in Maryland." Emily began perusing through the piles of finished cards and remaining accoutrements. "Well, not that many," Clifford smiled. "I have my list, and it certainly isn't that long, just my special friends." "I'll bet you have a favorite, besides me!" Emily teased, because she had already received her card from Clifford. "Sure I do," Clifford laughed and decided to change the subject. "I enjoy making these cards from scratch. And, later I'll go to the Pet Barn for Valentine treats." "I noticed that the Pet Barn has two huge Valentine cards in the front window," Emily recalled. "Yup," Clifford agreed, and finally put down the scissors. "She does that every year, and you know the saying about the famous GW #14, 'Ballentine, Valentine!' Heh, heh, heh!" "I stopped by the other day when the weather was nice on the way back from visiting Rocky Gorge," Clifford continued. "There's always the Doggie Bakery, but this week they have a Valentine display table near the front register with all sorts of special holiday goodies." "Such as what, big buddy?" Emily just had to inquire further. Clifford thought for a moment, "There are many heart-shaped cookies with icing which say, 'Top Dog,' 'Wet Kisses,' and 'Best Friend.' There are assorted candies and cookies with red and white icing, and the ingredients are safe and good." "One of the Pet Barn staff told me 'ingredients' means stuff they're made from, and that won't harm our teeth or tummies," Clifford explained a new word. "Or, give us doggie breath." "Well, big buddy, that is good news!" Emily hardily laughed, "Not only did you find healthy treats at the Pet Barn, but also you learned new things, too." "True, true, true," Clifford happily concurred, "and at the Doggie Bakery they have my standard favorites, as examples, Colli-Eclairs, Cheez Hound Twists, Greyhound Roll-a-Rounds, Boston Terrier Pie, Corgi Canoli, Schnauzer Short Cakes, Best-in-Show Bones, and Fur-de-Leis. Heh, heh, heh!" "They have everything!" excitedly Clifford caught his breath and broadly smiled thinking about the tempting treats. "They sound very yummy," Emily agreed, "and now I know what to get you for next Tuesday, or any special day." "Yes, they could be rewards for birthdays, anniversaries, and Opening Day," Clifford began thinking about baseball. "And, there is another thing about Valentine's Day..." "What's that, big buddy?" Emily had to interrupt and ask. "Spring training starts a few days afterwards," Clifford gleefully snapped, "and that's always exciting." He put down his materials and fetched a one page list from the top of his doggie dresser. 2006 Spring Training..Pit/Cat..Players..Site Arizona Diamondbacks Feb 17 Feb 22 C Atlanta Braves Feb 16 Feb 21 G Baltimore Orioles Feb 16 Feb 21 G Boston Red Sox Feb 18 Feb 22 G Chicago Cubs Feb 15 Feb 20 C Chicago White Sox Feb 17 Feb 22 C Cincinnati Reds Feb 16 Feb 21 G Cleveland Indians Feb 16 Feb 21 G Colorado Rockies Feb 17 Feb 22 C Detroit Tigers Feb 15 Feb 20 G Florida Marlins Feb 18 Feb 21 G Houston Astros Feb 17 Feb 23 G Kansas City Royals Feb 17 Feb 23 C Los Angeles Angels Feb 15 Feb 20 C Los Angeles Dodgers Feb 15 Feb 20 G Milwaukee Brewers Feb 17 Feb 24 C Minnesota Twins Fed 19 Feb 24 G New York Mets Feb 16 Feb 21 G New York Yankees Feb 16 Feb 21 G Oakland Athletics Feb 18 Feb 22 C Philadelphia Phillies Feb 15 Feb 21 G Pittsburgh Pirates Feb 16 Feb 21 G Saint Louis Cardinals Feb 16 Feb 20 G San Diego Padres Feb 16 Feb 21 C San Francisco Giants Feb 15 Feb 20 C Seattle Mariners Feb 15 Feb 20 C Tampa Bay Devil Rays Feb 16 Feb 21 G Texas Rangers Feb 15 Feb 20 C Toronto Blue Jays Feb 17 Feb 22 G Washington Nationals Feb 18 Feb 23 G Note: Pitchers and catchers report early. G=Grapefruit (Florida), C=Cactus (Arizona) Clifford gave the list to Emily, which she promptly read. "Some people always attend their team's spring training," Emily finally commented, and returned the page to him. "True, again," Clifford acknowledged, "but I don't because the Flames have indoor practices and exercises in winter. And, I visit Rocky Gorge every chance I get; it's open all the time even in the rain, except if there's too much snow. I don't use my wooden bat when it's too cold. I learned my lesson." Clifford smiled and flapped one of his long big red ears at Emily, as only he can. However, his thoughts quickly returned to Valentine's Day, and he further pondered, "I wish I could buy Pet Barn treats for all my friends on the baseball teams because the Flames let me play. And, the other teams too, because I enjoy their company and always want to be fair. But, I can't afford it, especially after Christmas, and work at Rock Gorge isn't as busy as in the spring and summer." "So, Clifford, who is your favorite and special Valentine?" Emily returned to her original question, as she placed one foot forward in a more demanding pose. "I'm sure Cleo, Mimi, and Susie are on your list," Emily suggested. Clifford nodded, but in such a manner that she instinctively knew they were not placed at the very top. She attempted to lean forward to read Clifford's notes, but doggie handwriting is notoriously difficult to discern, and concurrent with her not so subtle move he quickly placed a large red paw over the secretive page. "Maybe Clifford your special friend is a Flame or BarnCat?" Emily was only guessing. Clifford smiled, "Remember two years ago when you told me about the origins of Valentines. You mentioned festivals in Rome dedicated to Juno. I read about Emperor Augustus who at this time of year would lecture noble bachelors of Rome to select wives and that, 'marriage and families are the glue which hold society and nation together to sustain and continue Rome.' You told me about Saint Valentine in 270 AD, who sent the very first special card. Since then, they're suppose to be secret. Part of the fun is guessing who is the admirer behind each card and favor." As Clifford began putting away his scissors and materials, he joyfully replied, "The only thing my Valentines will know is their extra special treats came from the Pet Barn. The rest will be a bright red big secret!" Note: For more information on Valentine's Day see: Fame Forum, "Clifford's Big Red Card," Volume VII, Number 06, February 14, 2004.
