COLUMN: ADDITIONAL RECOGNITION Since its inception, sixty persons have received recognition from the NWB Hall of Fame. This includes twenty-one who were approved for formal induction and thirty-nine selected for a national award either as a player or coach. As part of recognition, they received a plaque/certificate, letter of acknowledgement, commemorative button, announcement about them in this newsletter, and their names were listed on the website. Individuals who received induction also have pictures posted in the photo section. http://www.eteamz.com/hallfame/albums These items are all directly related to the NWB Hall of Fame. In addition, there is another potential form of recognition, an example of which was requested last week, and is reprinted below with permission of the recipient. An exceptional player who received induction in 2004 into the NWB Hall of Fame is in the process of applying for law school, and requested a letter of reference. Similar letters could be prepared for college admission or an employment position. Such letters are usually brief, prepared on letterhead, signed and dated, and mailed to the candidate for submission to the appropriate official. Inclusion in the NWB Hall of Fame reflects achievement in sports, baseball in particular. Thus, comments could not be provided on specific academic (or employment) abilities, but certainly from participating in baseball, individual characteristics such as achievement, dedication, and determination are transferable. Baseball creates, improves, and enhances personal character, and successes in this endeavor can be applicable to other activities. Letter of Reference on NWB Hall of Fame Stationery Dear Admissions Committee: This note represents a letter of reference for Genevieve Beauchamp, a candidate for admissions to your department. Genevieve received induction into the NWB Hall of Fame in 2004, which is indicative of high levels of achievement and dedication in this chosen activity. Her role in the difficult position of team catcher reflects a unique level of involvement. Although I cannot comment on her academic potential, certainly the personal characteristics necessary for this type of recognition should be transferable to her collegiate endeavors. I would expect someone of Genevieve's caliber to be successful in any activity for which she has a genuine interest. Sincerely, Richard C. Jaffeson Executive Director B.
