COLUMN: VISIONS FROM DOCTOR LAURA'S EYES Still within our solar system, but capable of contemplating constellations well beyond, one astronomer on the basepaths whose sellar journeys cover all points across an infield as predictable as Haley's in her occurrences and projections; and we know nothing within her grasp is ever lost in space. The location of every projectile that dares enter her realm is instantly calculated to perfection, --velocity, direction, distance, and intercept angles are instinctively plotted in fractions of seconds and translated into appropriate action. What could be more exciting than such skilful juxtaposition in a close encounter at Langley Field in McLean on Sunday, August 9, 2009. The forces of the heavens were aligned as Blues and Flames rocketed white dotted spheres in a constant barrage as brilliant as a comet shower across the diamond. Blues with a shattering nine runs in the first two innings accumulated an advantage which appeared insurmountable, while the Flames, although hitting well, could only account for five of their own, as typical explosive trademark bats were uncharacteristically silent in the third and fourth. But, what a bottom of the fifth! Flames went super nova, blazing back with hot shots clearly defying Newton's Law when they charged ahead with six unanswered runs. However, for every action there is a reaction, and in the last inning with the score 11-10 Flames, the Blues posted players on every planetary position with one out remaining. At that critical juncture, the pitch after its delivery found a trajectory high, hard, and deep beyond the normal orbit of shortstop; it accelerated but was not destined to achieve escape velocity because that coveted position was held by no ordinary player. In those remaining precious seconds now to be remembered, closer planets aligned, --Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. The world was silent, the field reduced to a point in time, and distance was covered by a floating mystical force as if nothing moved but the ball and her together forever, as so envisioned... "With assured certainty, without allowance for mistakes, knowing full well the bases were loaded and this would be the final out, Laura placed both her hands around a trusted glove, tracked and caught the ball as it rapidly spiraled downward into her sole possession as if it had no other choice but to end the game in victory." "At my vantage point, I plainly observed every movement." "Laura's eyes sparkled with the spirit of determination!"
