COLUMN: PERSONAL COURAGE AND NATIONAL RESOLVE From deep inside the editorial room of the new Jergens Journal, high atop midtown Manhattan, "Let's go to press!" "Tap, tap, click-click-click. Tap, tap, click-click-click..." "Coast to Coast" "As reported over the electronic airwaves last week, April 15 marked the 60th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's debut in the majors with the Brooklyn Dodgers. In response to the occasion, weather permitting, last Sunday ballplayers across the country symbolically wore Number 42 hastily sewn onto their uniforms." "From the White House on April 14, President Bush issued the following statement, 'On April 15, 1947, an African American wearing the number 42 broke baseball's color barrier. Jackie Robinson's courage and skill convinced players, coaches, and fans to judge an athlete by performance and not the color of his skin. His leadership strengthened America's pastime and strengthened America. Sixty years later, our Nation celebrates Jackie Robinson's accomplishments and his legacy, and we give thanks for his extraordinary life.'" "Upon the occasion of his 25th anniversary, Jackie Robinson's Number 42 was retired by the Dodgers organization, and for the 50th anniversary it was similarly honored by both the National and American Leagues." "During his ten year baseball career, Jack Roosevelt Robinson (1919-1972) was named Rookie of the Year in 1947 and selected Most Valuable Player in 1949. He played on six World Series teams, and finally assisted the Dodgers in becoming baseball's world champions in 1955. During his first year of eligibility, he was inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame in 1962." "Tap, tap, click-click-click. Tap, tap, click-click-click..." "Back to Brooklyn" "Spring 1947 was not a bowl of cherries for Robinson, in fact, it often contained 'sour cherries.'" "As indicated last week, a difficult initial encounter was the challenge from Ben Chapman and the Phillies in an April game. According to an account in the New York Daily Mirror, Robinson ignored the adolescent unintelligent comments emanating from the Phillies' dugout, '...thus stamping himself as the only gentleman among those involved. He took it, and spoke with his bat and glove.'" "There were two important results of this unfortunate incident, as mentioned last week: first, overnight it unified the entire Dodgers team behind Robinson, and second, it changed Robinson from an unsure rookie into an excellent baseball player." "What happened to Chapman? The two teams immediately moved to resolve and repair the situation under the auspices of Rickey. The former minister swept unkind words aside and moved toward reconciliation and understanding to establish enduring results which judged someone on merit based upon actual performance." "Baseball again demonstrated democracy in action, and served as a prime example of good sportsmanship. Chapman recognized the abilities of Robinson. Within two weeks, newspapers around the country printed a photo (attached) of Robinson and Chapman together in uniform holding the same bat, as if saying to the nation and world, 'We are part of the same game, and America's pastime unites us all.' The caption read, 'Chapman adopts a friendly pose with Robinson.'" "Footnote on File" "Here are two quotes to consider and perhaps remember..." "Ford Frick, President, National League, 1947: 'This is the United States of America, and one citizen has as much right to play as another.'" "George W. Bush, President, United States, 2007, and former owner, Texas Rangers, and son of a Yale first baseman: 'Jackie Robinson's courage and skill convinced players, coaches, and fans to judge an athlete by performance...'" "Dateline to Your Health" "The Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation is still progressing as it celebrated its 60th anniversary last December. Established in 1946 by Walter Winchell, Runyon's closest friend and colleague, the fund has received and distributed $200 million to researchers and scientists in the field." "The following statement is from their website which contains more details about the foundation." www.drcrf.org "'Since its founding in late 1946, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation has been singularly focused on identifying and encouraging extraordinary young scientists to commit themselves to arresting cancer’s devastating legacy.'" "'The Foundation is dedicated to identifying generations of truly innovative investigators in cancer research, scientists who approach questions from totally new directions, and challenge existing dogma. To date, the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation invested more than $200 million in cancer research, supporting more than 3,000 of the most gifted scientists in the nation.'" "And, now beating the little red hand around the clock, --attention website bookstores. You should be receiving orders for a little publication entitled, 'Saving Ted Williams,' 164 pages, distributed by a subsidiary of Random House. Save time, it may be ordered from the publisher directly at 888-795-4274. More information is found on its accompanying website." www.SaveTed.net "And, ladies and gentlemen that winds up this week's edition of the Jergens Journal with lotions of love from your faithful correspondent who passes this message along to you from Jackie Robinson when he was Vice President, Chock Full O'Nuts Company, that no matter what you do, 'The most luxurious possession, the richest treasure, anybody has is their personal dignity.'" Note: As stated last week, this article was partially derived from the style of Walter Winchell (1897-1972) who began as a columnist for the New York Daily Mirror (1929-1963). His Jergens Journal (1932-1955), a 15-minute fast-paced news commentary was factual, emotional, and opinionated; and it riveted 50 million people to their radios every Sunday night. In addition, his informative newspaper columns appeared in more than 2,000 dailies. B.
