BRETT WIEST ACHIEVES WRESTLING MILESTONE
Brett Wiest reached a wrestling milestone against Mt. Carmel. During the Mt. Carmel match Brett got the FALL over Ryan Kogut at the 2:49 mark, recording his 100th career WIN. It was initially reported that he received a forfeit. (Brett our apologies) Every wrestler works very hard to be part of this 100 win club. Brett is the second Halifax wrestler to do so in the history of Halifax wrestling program. Quite an accomplishment when you think of all the wrestlers to come through Halifax's program. The first to achieve the milestone was Brian Hoover during the 2001-2002 season.
Brett and twin brother Bryan have been wrestling since elementary school. Anyone who wrestles knows you need to have a good partner in the room to help improve and push yourself. Who better than a brother to help push you in the room. Brett and Bryan both have good work ethic and we can only hope that both reach their goals during their senior seasons. It's been fun watching both of them wrestle.
Congratulations Brett on your accomplishment.

Halifax Wrestler Bryan Wiest Claims 152 lb title
Senior wrestler Bryan Wiest earned the Halifax Wildcats their 4th District III Class AA individual title in 3 years by claiming the 152 lb. championship this weekend. Bryan was joined on the winners list by brother Brett who finished 3rd after falling to 2003 State place winner Mike Mackie 9-3 in the semi's.
Bryan claimed his title with a dominating performance throughout the tournament. Bryan won his first match with a 11-0 win over Clayton Kern of Northeastern, a 12-2 win over defending District III champ Vreeland Wood of Hamburg, and a 16-3 win over Brett Christopher of Boiling Springs in the semi's.
Bryan faced faced Bermudian Springs Jon Hade, a Junior, in the finals and knocked off the 31-2 wrestler by a 8-1 score to earn his first District title.

FRISCO Article on Weight class realignment
Dozen weight classes just right for Pa. wrestlers
Thursday, March 04, 2004
So, just what shall we do about the number of scholastic wres tling weight classes in Penn sylvania?
Well, you and I aren't really going to do anything about them, other than pitch in our three cents worth (inflation, ya know).
But the PIAA has already done something about it, and from this little perch in Harrisburg, it seems like pretty good stuff.
The PIAA's primary proposal: Slash the number of weight classes from 14 to 12, increase the gap between weights in the lower weight classes, and possibly eliminate the two-pound growth allowance that kicks in every Jan. 15.
The PIAA's proposed weight classes -- 108, 115, 123, 130, 137, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215 and 275.
Pennsylvania is one of two states that has submitted a formal proposal for weight class changes to the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), the governing body of interscholastic sports rules based in Indianapolis.
North Dakota has submitted a comparable proposal, according to Jerry Diehl, the wrestling rules liaison for NFHS.
"I don't know if North Dakota and Pennsylvania have been talking, but the proposals are very similar," Diehl said. "Both want the number of weight classes reduced from 14 to 12, and their suggestions for new weights are very close."
Just why is there a rush to cut back to 12 weights, a number that hasn't been used since 1988?
Diehl and PIAA associate executive director Dr. Robert Lombardi say there has been plenty of anecdotal evidence to suggest that 14 weights and possibly 13 (Pennsylvania used 13 weights from 1989 through 2002) were just too many.
Minnesota, in conjunction with neighboring North and South Dakota, took it a step further, doing an exhaustive scientific study that gave weight to the anecdotal evidence. There is less participation at 103 than most other weights, the bulk of that participation is by underclassmen, and the middle weight classes needed a bigger gap than five pounds.
When the NFHS meets in Indianapolis on April 4-5, Diehl said some action will be taken.
"What we don't know is exactly what that action will be," Diehl said. "If the [wrestling] rules committee makes a recommendation, it could be in place for the upcoming season. But it could also be tabled to require more information."
The NFHS would do well to get national input before instituting new weight classes. Back in the early 1990s, NFHS decreed a new set of weight classes that was so unpopular several states, including Pennsylvania, refused to implement it. The next year, NFHS rescinded its set of weights and returned to the weights in effect this weekend (minus 215).
While there is certainly no unanimity on the issue, something has to be done. One need only look at the appalling number of forfeits in the daily summaries to know that 14 weights are too many.
"Some people feel that if we cut the number of weight classes that we are also reducing opportunity for wrestlers," Diehl said.
But what good is opportunity if it is being ignored?
No, a tighter, better set of weight classes is in order. Some might take the view that there will be four fewer state champions and 64 fewer state qualifiers if a 12-weight set is adopted. That's true. But is that bad? It certainly didn't kill the sport in the 1960s and 1970s when that number was absolute.
Wrestling people -- and you know who you are -- constantly wring their hands fretting about the health of the sport, and for good reason. If they are truly concerned about the future of wrestling, they should get behind the PIAA's proposal and accept the fact that reduction in weights is necessary.
And they'd better do it quickly. That train coming down the tracks has just 12 cars, not 14, but it's coming just the same.

If you have never experienced the agony of defeat, then you had better get living. I pity the poor souls that have never felt the stinging pain of failure. Failing at anything is not pleasant. In fact, failing just down right sucks! However, experiencing failure is what propels us forward. Experiencing failure is what makes us strong. This story sponsored by:

To achieve success, especially in the sport of wrestling, it takes putting ourselves on the line. It takes stepping up to the plate and swinging the bat fiercely, maybe striking out several times. It takes exposing oneself totally. Exposing strengths as well as weaknesses.
Many people do not want to expose their weaknesses. They are afraid of what people might see. They are afraid of what people might think or what they might say.
I dont know
there are a lot of ways to look at life. We can go through life cautiously, being careful not to expose too much. We can go through life with some degree of aggressiveness, taking some chances but still being careful. Or we can really Go For It! And why not
why not really go for it? Why not try and be the very best at what we are doing? Why should we settle? Why should we settle for mediocrity. Settling sucks! Settling means you limit your opportunity to feel the greatest emotion that there is in life
the thrill of victory!
Steve Fraser
There is no better feeling in the entire world then accomplishing something that is so very difficult. Something that so many people may want but only a few can have. Especially in the wonderful sport of wrestling.
In wrestling there is usually only one champion in each weight class. Each wrestler strives to be the champ but only one that will get the gold. And when you are the one that gets the gold, it is the ultimate feeling.
The thrill of victory is the ultimate high. Whether it is the city, state, national, or world championship, the thrill of victory is tremendous.
There is only one way to win the wrestling title or more importantly experience the thrill of victory. We must put it all out there. We must put everything we have on the line. When we put it all out there, we expose ourselves. And when we expose ourselves, we sometimes will stumble and fail. Sometimes we will lose. Sometimes we will be defeated. But that is life. That is what makes the thrill of victory so sweet.
There is no possible way to experience the thrill of victory without looking right into the eye of failure. We have got to challenge failure. We cannot be afraid of it.
Theodore Roosevelt once said
Far better it is to dare mighty deeds to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure then to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the great twilight of knowing victory or defeat.
It is attitude! An attitude that does not care what people may see, think or say. It is an attitude that will not be satisfied with mediocrity. It is an attitude that says life is too short to be middle of the road. Life is too short to be cautious about winning.
With my wrestling career I thought, if I am going to do all the hard work that it takes to be successful in wrestling, why not give it that little bit extra. It is that little bit extra that makes a huge difference in the final outcome. It is that little extra that separates the stars from the rest. The little extra is the key to success.
What do I mean a little extra? Just what it sounds like. A little extra effort in every aspect of your life.
In regards to wrestling it means a little extra wrestling, a little extra running, a little extra technique work, a little extra study of the sport and a little extra toughness. To bottom line it, it means A Little Extra!
So if you are waiting till tomorrow to give it your all, STOP. Do it today for tomorrow may never come. Take on each day like it was your last. Approach each practice like it was your final one. Take on each match like there is no tomorrow.
Start putting everything you have forward each and every moment, and you will advance very fast. You will move ahead in life with great enthusiasm and you will be excited about your progress. Happy are those who go for the gusto in life for they will look back some day with no regrets.
Expect To Win!
