Article from Pottsville Republician (A MUST READ FOR THOSE WHO DARE)
Offseason dedication produces winners
03/18/2007
Email to a friendPrinter-friendlyBy now, the cuts, scratches and mat burns have begun fading away.
Its been days since your last weigh-in.
And your opponents last cross-face.
And your last nosebleed.
Life is good. Especially for a wrestler in late March.
The season is over. The daily pounding you put your body and mind through has subsided. You can finally take a deep breath after a long winter of work.
But not for too long. A week or 10 days. Heal up physically. Recharge mentally.
OK, breaks over.
Several teams in the Schuylkill League are at a crossroads. Now is the time for those squads Blue Mountain, Pine Grove, Tamaqua, Tri-Valley and Mount Carmel top the list to decide whether they want to get really good or remain average.
The local talent pool has deepened in the last 18 months, and theres another wave of tough kids on the way. The results this season point toward brighter days ahead.
Im talking to the 42 underclassmen who won at least 20 matches last season. And to the nine others who won at least 30. Thats 51 young guys with undeniable talent.
On the other hand, just nine returnees qualified for regionals and five others made it to states. Of those 14, only Pine Groves Chas Aungst and Mount Carmels Josh Malick and James Haynes left Hershey with medals.
Right below the 20-bout winners are another two dozen or more who have the ability to become consistent winners.
But only if they dedicate themselves this summer.
In March they have to make their goals for the summer, Pine Grove coach Steve Donofrio said. If they dont write it down, its not going to happen.
It starts with the wrestlers themselves and their parents. The guys have to decide this is something they want to strive for, and the parents have to provide support.
Area coaches clamor for more wrestlers to join them in their summer clubs. If you ask them for help, theyll work with you, come up with a plan for the offseason and do everything in their power to make you better.
A fire burns inside these coaches to make the Schuylkill League powerful again on the district and state levels.
That work has already begun at Blue Mountain, where coach Tod Kindig has welcomed kids from his school and others around eastern Pennsylvania into his room. He stresses that the offseason program runs in a relaxed atmosphere, and that he just wants kids to get the mat time at workouts and tournaments to excel in next years varsity season.
Wins and losses in the summer dont matter. Breaking out of your comfort zone and growing are whats important.
You get to a certain point in the sport where you know all the moves, but until you get that drilling in, that repetitive drilling and the live mat time on a regular basis, its not going to become muscle memory, Kindig said.
All I hope to accomplish over the summer is to see my kids, he added. All the rest will take its course. ... The offseason, thats when your growth is going to come.
It seems pointless to put in the work only during the season and get little out of it in return. Yet thats what too many of the talented area wrestlers do.
With some consistent effort over the summer, they can turn a good experience as a wrestler into a great one.
Just ask Pine Grove senior Ryan Reichert. Before this season, Reichert was one of those slightly above average kids: 21-12 as a sophomore, 24-9 as a junior.
Thats as far as hed go. Hed hit the wall at districts and his season would be done. No regional berth. No trip to Hershey.
But Reichert wanted it. Badly.
So last summer he went after it. With hard work came better results: a 33-7 record, a Schuylkill League Tournament championship, a bronze medal at districts and a silver at regionals to earn his first and only trip to the PIAA Championships.
He had a great summer, Donofrio said. He went to two camps, states in Greco, was one of our top guys in points for attendance.
He was there all summer in the weight room, Donofrio added. He did all I asked him to do. And he played football (defensive end) on top of it, too.
You cant do it in three months (December-February). Its almost impossible.
Reichert proved hard work still works. So all of you eighth through 11th graders out there, who wants to be great? Who wants to be a state qualifier, a placewinner or even a champion?
Now is the time to start answering those questions.

2007 Elementary Awards
The 2006-2007 season came to an end at the Halifax Elementary wrestling banquet on Sunday 3/4/07. The season started in November of 2006 and all elementary wrestlers received a participation trophy to reward them for their hard work during the season. For some of the wrestlers it was their first award and you could see how happy they were to receive their first wrestling trophy. For others it was just another step in their progress. The season was long and hard and almost all wrestlers went to tournaments throughout the season. Success at this level is not measured with win's but rather the experience they gather while wrestling. Learning the moves and then applying them in a real match is the goal. All the coach's felt this group achieved those results. Below are some other awards present to recognize those who over achieved.
Robert Moretz (6th grade) and Tyler Bordner (6th grade) Commitment Award. Both have wrestled in the elementary program for 6 years and will move on to the Jr. High next season.

Halifax's Masser reaches 300-win mark
Sunday, January 28, 2007
From staff reports (Patriot News)
Thirty-two years ago, Lahn Masser walked into the Halifax wrestling room as a young coach with limited experience, but eager to lead the Wildcats' program.
Yesterday, he left Schuylkill County as a 300-match winner.
Halifax's 39-33 triumph over Panther Valley in a Schuylkill League Division II match was Masser's 300th career victory, passing a milestone that is held in high esteem by the coaching community.
By gaining his 300th victory, Masser became eligible for nomination to the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Winning 300 matches used to ensure automatic entry into the hall, but the association changed the procedure last year.
Halifax lost an earlier Schuylkill League match to Jim Thorpe 60-19 to stand at 8-9 overall.
Halifax coach earns 300th career win (From the Pottsville Republican)
LANSFORD Lahn Masser has been coaching at Halifax for 32 years.
Saturdays 39-33 victory over Panther Valley carried a little extra meaning as it was the 300th of Massers career. Eric Miller (145) posted a key 13-8 decision over Nick Lorah, while Damian Palmer (103), D.J. Simmons (160), Tyler Enders (171), Dwight Hentz (215) and Ryan Belack (285) added falls for the Wildcats.
When youre young and starting out, you look at the older coaches and wonder how they do it, said the 58-year-old Masser (300-284-2). Then it seems like the next day and youre there. Time passes quickly.
An awful lot of nice kids that went into that (milestone), he added. Ive appreciated working with them.
Generally, year in and year out, weve had exceptionally nice kids to deal with. We havent had a lot of discipline problems, and that motivates you to keep on doing it. Thats rewarding for a coach by itself.
According to the PIAA Championships program, just 66 Pennsylvania coaches had reached 300 wins heading into this season.
