*****DAY 2 REVIEW!*****
MEMPHIS WHITE STATION (TN) 87 HUMBLE CHRISTIAN LIFE 86
All American Joe Jackson scored double digits in all but the opening quarter, but none were more important than his deep trey with 1:10 remaining to give White Station an 85-84 lead. With just under six minutes to go, Christian Life held a commanding 82-67 advantage. Guard Isaiah Jones was in the process of racking up a career high. "If you hit another one, I'll kiss you", jokingly yelled the coach after Jones knocked down back to back three pointers to open the fourth period. As you can see, the Christian Life squad was cracking jokes and jollying around with each other. It was almost like watching the Harlem Globetrotters. Then all the sudden, Christian Life stopped scoring and White Station started to blaze. With :33 left, White Station junior guard Andre Hollins sank a baseline jumper to tie the game at 86. Christian Life had the possession with heavy odds of overtime or winning the game in their favor. One of the players took a shot, missed, and a teammate was whistled for an over the back foul - with less than :02 on the clock. That sent Hollins to the free throw line. He knocked down the first one, and purposely missed the latter for the final result.
WS: Joe Jackson 42, Andre Hollins 22, Harry Green 12, Nino Johnson 5, Rodriguez Tucker 4, Julian Burton 2
CL: Isiah Jones 31, CJ Smith 17, Leslee Smith 15, Hersey Robinson 9, Chris Coleman 6, Jason Carter 4, Deividas Pukis 2, PJ Hardwick 2
HOUSTON BELLAIRE 49 PLANO PRESTONWOOD 35
The state's #1 5A team against the #2 private school pretty much lived up to the hype - for three entire quarters. Then, experience became the best teacher. Bellaire's senior trio of Jamel Outler, Sebastian Douglass, and Tobi Oyedeji (8rebs, 7 blks) combined for all 18 of the team's fourth quarter points, and aside from a third quarter lay in by Sheldon McClellan - no other Bellaire player scored the entire second half. Prestonwood's frontcourt of Julius Randle and Zack Peters were aggressive, but fatigue and fouls began to mount as the game progressed. Also, one of the state's top perimeter shooters, Jason Pospichal hit his only three pointer of the game midway through the fourth quarter. Bellaire's starting pf Kene Anyigbo did not suit up (wrist injury), and reserve Joe Okafor (Oklahomas State football recruit) stepped up with nice minutes in his absence.
B: Jamel Outler 13, Tobi Oyedeji 11, Sebastian Douglass 10, Sheldon McClellan 7, Johnathan Evans 6, Joe Okafor 2
P: Zach Peters 11, Jason Posphical 9, Julius Randle 6, Riley Standridge 5, Sean Hansen 2, Marquan Botley 2
NORCROSS (GA) 61 HOUSTON STRAKE JESUIT 46
Strake Jesuit gave their all and actually led Norcross entering the second period. Depth was a major factor in this contest. Only four players scored for Strake Jesuit including sophomore guards Rasheed Sulaimon and John Gillon (25pts combined). Outstanding junior wing Jeremy Lamb (26pts) was nearly a one man wrecking crew for Norcross.
N: Jeremy Lamb 26, Marty Johnson 12, Malcolm McDonald 7, Jason Croom 6, Nate Sims 4, Josiah Moore 4, E. Victor Nickerson 2
SJ: Rasheed Sulaimon 19, Elliot Franshaw 12, John Gillon 8, Michael Felton 7
MOUNT ZION (NC) 53 HUMBLE ATASCOCITA 50 - OVERTIME
Mt Zion tried to do everything in their power to give this game to Atascocita, but for some reason, the local team allowed numerous opportunities to slip away. With less than a second in regulation, and the game tied 47 apiece, Joemar Black missed two free throws for Mt Zion. In the extra period, Atascocita's Everett Pleasant had a chance to tie the game with a set of free throws - clank. No player reached double figures for Atascocita. Mt Zion got a game high 21pts from power forward Abdulwali Kasim.
MZ: Abdul Kasim 21, Nicholas Boston 9, Tyler Brunson 7, Desmond Louis 7, Joemar Black 6, Devon Ballanger 5
A: Everett Pleasant 9, Josh Taylor 9, Justin Felicia 6, Adam Ward 5, Travis Leonard 5, Leroy Taylor 4, Reggie Hill 4, Chaz Carrington 2, Eugene Gipson 2
PIN OAK MIDDLE SCHOOL 38 ALDINE TEAGUE MIDDLE SCHOOL 25
Pin Oak's duo of Christian Sanders and Jeffrey Robinson combined to outscore the entire Teague team which had a lot of balance - 9 different players scored. Pin Oak didn't score a single point in the fourth quarter (outscored 9-0), yet still won by double figures.
PO: Christian Sanders 19, Jeffrey Roberson 12, Jonathan Wiley 4, Cameron Lawton 2, Williams Clement 1
AT: Chris Matson 5, Cordrick Rodgers 4, Safria Martinez 3, Shaun Patterson 3, Mahdi Shabazz 3, Broderick Melancon 2, KeAndre Terrell 2, Kendall Mayberry 2, Jermaine Banks 1
MISSOURI CITY MIDDLE SCHOOL 72 ALBERT THOMAS MIDDLE SCHOOL 45
During the Thanksgiving break, Albert Thomas knocked off Missouri City to win the prestigious Stars of the Future Tournament. MC vowed to get revenge if they ever met again, and so the stage was set. To be quite frank, Thomas didn't know what hit 'em. The MC players came out firing on all cylinders and withstood Thomas' pressure defense. Next thing you know, MC led 23-8 at the end of the first period, and the rest was history. A total of five MC players scored in double figures while handing AT their first loss of the season.
MC: Zavion Holloway 17, Justin Gardner 14, JaQourie Huerrell 11, Damien Day 10, Kyle Patterson 10, Dominic Roberson 4, Jakori Jones 2, Javon Jones 2, Markus Allen 2
AT: Nicholas Bennett 12, Avery Ragland 8, Broderick Bonner 8, Cedric Fields 6, Earnest Matthews 6, Jaquan McKnight 2, Curtion Wesley 2, LaBradford Carr 1
WESTBURY CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL 38 HCYA MIDDLE SCHOOL 37
After HCYA took the lead during the closing moments, Westbury Christian coach drew up a successful last second play which generated a buzzer beating tip in by Joshua Reece. It certainly pays to be at the right place at the right time.
TWC: Joshua Reece 11, Kyle Guidry 10, Elliot Taylor 6, Jordan Gillon 6, James McKenzie 3, Deiondre Jones 2
H: Joshua Decker 12, Anthony Palmer 10, Colby Williamson 8, Caleb Guerrero 5, Andrew Carter 2
WESTBRIAR MIDDLE SCHOOL 57 JOHNSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL 41
Talented wing Sherman Coleman was the most active player on the court while pouring in a game high 21pts in the win. A total of 10 different players scored for Westbriar.
W: Sherman Coleman 21, Kevin Baines 9, Jordan Metoyer 8, Jamal Turner 5, Dyland Livit 5, Wesley Van Beck 4, Stanley Kanu 2, Harold Lewis 1, RC Haynes 1, Zach Bowman 1
J: Avery Jordan 13, Cameron Davis 7, Kendric Jones 6, Ethan Willform 5, Justin Lane 4, Kevin Duvisien 3
ALDINE PLUMMER MIDDLE SCHOOL 60 PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL 42
After coming out red hot and scoring 19pts in the first quarter, Pershing went ice cold and was limited to a mere 4pts in the second frame. Plummer kept things simple by pounding it inside, which allowed big man Kendrick Bradford to score pretty much uncontested. If was wasn't for so many missed free throws (21) on behalf of Plummer (including 3/12ft by Bradford), this game could have gotten really ugly.
AP: Kendrick Bradford 23, Don Tyrone 11, Josh Caldwell 9, Donald Catalon 8, Javon Shelley 5, Marquis Bell 4
P: Darrell Colbert 15, Michael Brown 8, John Bonney 7, Ryan Odgen 7, Jobin Abrahim 2, Darius Durall 2, Jerik Smith 1
*****DAY 1 REVIEW!*****
HOUSTON BELLAIRE 71 MEMPHIS WHITE STATION (TN) 68
The state's top (5A) team, Bellaire HS trailed most of the fourth quarter before using an acrobatic layin by guard Sebastian Douglass 6'3 sr to go in front of Memphis White Station 68-66. Moments later, teammates Jamel Outler (signed with Texas Tech) and Kene Anyigbo (signed with Western Kentucky) added baskets to help Bellaire hold onto the 72-68 victory. White Station guard Joe Jackson (signed with Memphis) missed his first six shots but indeed lived up to the hype, finishing with 22pts (6/21fg, 2/8trey, 8/11ft). Without question, the best player on the court (on this night) was Bellaire's Tobi Oyedeji (signed with Texas A&M) who was nearly perfect from the field - a season high 29pts (12/13fg, 5/5ft) grabbed 13 boards and swatted 7 attempts. Only four players scored for White Station (23/57fg, 6/17trey, 16/25ft) who had relatively comparible stats as Bellaire (29/56fg, 2/8trey, 12/21ft).
B (72): Tobi Oyedeji 29, Sheldon McClellan 18, Sebastian Douglass 10, Kene Anyigbo 7, Johnathan Evans 5, Jamel Outler 3
WS (68): Joe Jackson 22, Andre Hollins 22, Nino Johnson 17, Marvin Williams 7
PLANO PRESTON WOOD 59 HOUSTON STRAKE JESUIT 39
The frontcourt of Zach Peters 6'9 soph and Julius Randle 6'8 fr were flat out unstoppable as they combined for 30pts to lead Dallas based Prestonwood Christian Academy past the defending 5A state finalist, Strake Jesuit. The Crusaders trailed by single digits at the break 33-24 - thanks in part to the hot hand of Rasheed Sulaimon 6'3 soph(16pts in 1st half). On the other end of the court, Jason Pospichal 6'2 sr marvelled the crowd with five first half threes of his own. Prestonwood young frontcourt held Strake's senior forward Elliott Franshaw scoreless.
P: Jason Posphical 17, Julius Randle 16, Zackh Peters 14, Marquan Botley 5, Riley Standridge 2, Andy Ryan 2, Aaron Wyatt 2, Sean Hansen 1
SJ: Rasheed Sulaimon 23, John Gillon 7, Kyle Whitney 3, Michael Felton 3, Dylan Monmouth 2, Chiso Uche 1
NORCROSS (GA) 52 HUMBLE ATASCOCITA 47
Despite a proportionately dominating game by Everett Pleasant 6'5 jr (18pts / 12rebs), Norcross had too much length, balance, and had enough success from the free throw line to pull out the 52-47 win. E.Victor Nickerson 6'6 jr, Malcolm McDonald 6'5 sr, and Jeremy Lamb 6'2 sr did most of the damage for Norcross. The team sank 12/ 15ft compared to Atascocita's 4/ 11ft.
N: Malcolm McDonald 12, E. Victor Nicherson 12, Jeremy Lamb 11, Marty Johnson 8, Chris Bolden 5, Josiah Moore 4
A: Everett Pleasant 18, Reggie Hill 5, Leroy Taylor 5, Josh Taylor 5, Justin Felicia 4, Adam Ward 4, Chaz Carrington 3, Travis Leonard 3
HUMBLE CHRISTIAN LIFE 77 MOUNT ZION (NC) 56
Christian Life absolutely dismantled Mount Zion in the biggest rout of the day. Four players scored double figures for the Cougars, led by CJ Smith 6'1 sr with 15pts and Leslee Smith (signed with SMU) 14pts. Plus the win was sweet for Chris Coleman 6'9 jr who transferred from Mt Zion to Humble Christian Life during the summer. Despite 11 pre paid plane tickets, Mt Zion only had six players make the trip to Houston. Floor general Desmond Louis (originally from south Louisiana) dazzled the crowd with 16pts in the loss.
CL: CJ Smith 15, Leslee Smith 14, Deividas Pukis 12, Isaiah Jones 11, George Jackson 8, Jason Carter 6, PJ Hardwick 4, Chris Coleman 4, Winslo Barry 1
MZ: Desmond Louis 16, Nicholas Boston 15, Adbul Kasim 7, Devon Ballanger 6, Joemar Black 6, Tyler Brunson 4
ALDINE PLUMMER MIDDLE SCHOOL 54 WESTBRIAR MIDDLE SCHOOL 38
Plummer jumped out to a commanding 18-6 first quarter lead, and never looked back. Kendrick Bradford 6'7 and Don Tyrone combined for 16 of those 18pts. Westbriar was paced by Sherman Coleman who scored 10 of his 17pts in the final frame.
P: Don Tyrone 23, Kendrick Bradford 14, Donald Catalon 7, Marquis Bell 6, Javon Shelley 3, Terrell Bookman 1
W: Sherman Coleman 17, Kevin Baines 8, Jamal Turner 6, Wesley Van Beck 3, Zach Bowman 2, Stanley Kanu 2
MISSOURI CITY MIDDLE SCHOOL 57 PIN OAK MIDDLE SCHOOL 39
Guard Damien Day had his mid range game on full throttle while helping Missouri City to huge win over the talented Pin Oak squad featuring Christian Sanders who was spectacular, but his game high 24pts was nearly matched on the other end by Day. The win enhances Tuesday's much anticipated showdown between Missouri City and undefeated Albert Thomas MS, in a rematch of the championship game from the Stars of the Future Tournament held during the Thanksgiving holidays.
MC: Damien Day 22, Justin Gardner 12, Zavion Holloway 10, Kyle Patterson 6, Caleb Pete 2, JaWourie Huerrell 2, Dominic Roberson 2, Javon Jones 1
P: Christian Sanders 24, Jonathan Wiley 5, Jeffrey Roberson 5, DJ Green 2, William Clement 2, Devante Dixon 1
ALDINE TEAGUE MIDDLE SCHOOL 36 PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL 35
Teague used a ferocious 16-6 fourth quarter rally to disappoint Pershing's upset bid. Broderick Melancon scored 8 of his 13pts during the final frame. Pershing was paced by Darrell Colbert (son of TSU asst football coach).
T: Broderick Melancon 13, Mahdi Shabazz 9, Jermaine Banks 2, KeAndre Terrell 2, Kendall Mayberry 2, Cordrick Rodgers 1
P: Darrell Colbert 14, Ryan Odgen 6, Abdul Ahmad 5, Michael Brown 4, Errol Wheeler 2, Darius Durall 2, Wally Khan 2
ALBERT THOMAS MIDDLE SCHOOL 61 HCYA MIDDLE SCHOOL 46
Even without head coach Ronald Revas absent, Thomas MS appeared to be in auto pilot mode as they cruised past HCYA 61-46. Nicholas Bennett knocked down a pair of treys and hit 14 of his game high 21pts in the second half. The HCYA squad is comprised of Homeschooled seventh and eighth graders throughout Greater Houston. They were led by forward Anthony Palmer and the grand hustle of guard Caleb Guerrero.
T: Nicholas Bennett 21, Cedric Fields 12, Avery Ragland 8, LaBradford Carr 7, Broderick Bonner 7, Jaquan McKnight 4, Earnest Matthews 2
H: Anthony Palmer 19, Joshua Decker 9, Caleb Guerrero 8, Colby Williamson 7, Zach Cruz 3
JOHNSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL 54 WESTBURY CHRISTIAN MIDDLE SCHOOL 46
The opening game of the event featured a rare accomplishment within the middle school ranks. Avery Jordan posted a triple double 25pts / 12rebs / 10blks to lift Johnston past Westbury Christian. Jordan is the younger sibling of former Humble Christian Life star and current LA Clipper DeAndre Jordan. He could have eclipsed the 30pt barrier, but missed 8 of his 11 free throw attempts. Westbury Christian stayed within striking distance most of the game as a result of sharpshooting Kyle Guidry (24pts). However, they had no answer for Jordan on the inside.
J: Avery Jordan 25, Kevin Duvisien 9, Ethan Willform 8, Kendric Jones 8, Tex Bright 2
WC: Kyle Guidry 24, Jordan Gillon 6, Joshua Reece 6, MJ Nelson 4, James McKenzie 3, Deiondre Jones 2, Elliot Taylor 1
