SECOND BAPTIST & CHRISTIAN LIFE SUFFER 1st LOSS @ SOUTH PADRE ISLAND INVITATIONAL!
By: Jim Hicks (RCS Sports)
San Antonio Clarke pulled off the the perfect underdog performance, knocking off a much taller Plano West team and previously unbeaten Second Baptist (17-1) to claim first place in the South Padre Island Invitational. After both teams received their awards and headed towards the locker room area, a loud forceful roar floated throughout the Convention Center. Many adults raced towards the back only to find the players united and conversing with each other. A few steps down the hall (in the hospitality room) a congregation of coaches and officials were expressing their joy after witnessing University of Texas football team survive Nebraska on a buzzer beating field goal.
In the championship game, Senior guard Elhad Emerllahu scored 9 of his game high 22pts to propel Clarke past Second Baptist (60-56) in the title game. The ball bounced in Clarke's favor from the opening possession - after SB's Henry Riasco unleashed an air ball, Clarke responded with an 11-2 spurt and never trailed.
SB opened the second period with six unanswered points to close to within 15-14. But a 11-4 counter by Clarke provided an eight point cushion that was maintained until halftime when the score was 28-20. Linebacker built forward Ansley Benjamin was the "X-factor" in the first half with 10 magnified points. Clark shot 50% from the field (12/24fg, 1/6treys, 1/1ft) in the first half compared to SB's (9/31fg, 0/7treys, 2/7ft).
Every time SB made a mini run, Clarke came up with a huge basket or two which basically held serve. A buzzer beating shot by Ansley gave Clarke a 44-34 lead heading into the final period. During the last eight minutes, the momentum slightly shifted towards SB. Back to back three point play opportunities by Mikhail McLean followed by a pair of free throws from Andre Prince trimmed the gap to 50-47 (the closest since early in the second quarter). Teammate LJ Rose later added consecutive treys and it appeared the Eagles were in business. However, timely baskets by Emerllahu and floor general Jason Brickman (named MVP) were just too much to overcome.
After Henry Riasco nailed a long ball, SB trailed 59-56, and was forced to foul. With :15 left, Brickman sank one of two free throws to make it a two possession game, and seal the win (see point totals below). Clarke is coached by Clear Lake HS product Steve Sylestine.
Props to tournament director Vern Lewis (son of Phi Slamma Jamma don, Guy V. Lewis) for providing an outstanding event. You guys know I had to inspect the back, and this may have been the first time I ever feasted on shrimp in the hospitality room. If that wasn't enough, the caterers brought out some "Elsie the Cow" type rib eye steaks. Lewis must understand the golden rule regarding media - it's hard to write good things when your belly is empty.
