The award is $1,000.00 each year for every year that the student is attending a university for a term of up to four years. The Faraone Scholarship winners will be selected by the George Washington High School Basketball Foundation's Scholarship Committee, chaired by Mr. Faraone, members of the George Washington High School Basketball Foundation, and the sitting Principal of George Washington. The Faraone Scholarship shall be awarded to one George Washington High School Senior Boy's and one Girl's Varsity graduating team member going to a four year University every year. The recipient will be the varsity team members who best represent the values of a George Washington High School Student Athlete: a student who strives for excellence in the classroom as well as on the basketball court; the winners will exemplify the character and compassion of a leader in our community. This award has been made possible by the generosity and vision of Frank Faraone, class of 1945. He is a native San Franciscan who attended Argonne Grammar School and Presidio Jr. High School before entering George Washington HS in 1942. Mr. Faraone is an active supporter of the George Washington High School Basketball Foundation. Mr. Faraone played on the 110 basketball team under coach Lloyd Leith. He then moved up to the 130 team under coach Tiny Bussenius. This team, rated by sportswriters as one of the finest in AAA history, went undefeated, won the City championship and placed Frank Faraone on the 1944 All-City team. In his senior year, Frank led the GW varsity in scoring and assists as the Eagles won the first San Francisco pre-season tournament championship. He was the unanimous selection as captain of the All-Tourney team. During the AAA season, Faraone led all scorers and was selected to the 1945 All-City Team by the four daily newspapers. The Call-Bulletin named Faraone "Player of the Year... fast with a good eye and an excellent team leader, he made the Eagles look classy." In his junior and senior years Frank lettered on the swimming and tennis teams. Coach Bussenius rated Faraone as one of the finest players he had ever coached. After graduating from Washington High, Faraone received a scholarship at Santa Clara University. He played four years of varsity basketball and tennis. He served in the U.S. Army 1946-48, where he led the Fort McClellan team to the 7th Army championship with a record of 21-4. He graduated from Santa Clara in 1951 with a B.Sc., and embarked on a 30-year career with General Motors Public Relations. Mr. Faraone headed public relations activities in Dallas, Chicago, New York City, Detroit and Washington D.C. He retired from GM in 1981 and ultimately returned to the Bay Area where he served as a public affairs consultant for Hanna Boys Center and Dominican University. Frank was elected to the GWHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994, and the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame in 1999. He is married and lives with his wife, Alfreda, in Napa, California.
