A Brief History:
San Francisco's George Washington High School was built in 1936 as part of the Federal Government's public works projects. The school has served Richmond District's families for nearly seventy years. Currently, GWHS year high school welcomes students from all across San Francisco, who come from diverse backgrounds in terms of origin, ethnicity, and income. Despite the many heterogeneous nature of the families whose students attend GWHS, their common aim has always been a good education for their children. Washington High School has delivered on this academic promise for generations. George Washington has long been the public school of choice for many San Franciscans.

What we do for you, our community:
Our athletic programs are structured to develop our youth into productive members of our community. They have been successful at Washington HS, representing the school and community in many sports with true student-athletes. Historically, our basketball team has successfully competed against other teams in San Francisco as well as those through out the state. Our basketball alumni reflect the community that it serves - we are everyone from doctors and judges to public service leaders and pastors. We want to continue this tradition of developing excellent student-athletes that serve our community.

What we need to do for our kids:
We know what we do is valuable. In the last five years, 100% of our graduating seniors have gone on to college. We have won numerous awards and praise for the character of our players from other organizations across California. The CIF, (California Interscholastic Federation) recognized both the girls and boys basketball team amongst the top scholastic teams in the state. In addition, the CIF San Francisco section awarded our boys coach, Lawrence Yee, as the most sportsman like coach in the 2002-03 season based largely in part to the sportsmanship our players displayed on the court. Our athletic programs teach life's most important lessons to our students: sportsmanship, dedication, teamwork, respect for others, and respect for themselves. However, one of our greatest concerns at George Washington is the future of our basketball program. Due to the financial uncertainty within the state budget, and the reality that the city has already cut numerous educational programs, our fear is that we may no longer be able to instill the values in which we have successfully built this program on. Our students are the heart and soul of our basketball program - yet without adequate funding to assure our program's future, all our efforts will come to an unworthy end. We appeal to you on behalf of our students, who are the future of our community for your financial support with our number one priority -- to allow us to continue our mission of developing the young members of our community in a positive fashion. Your financial support is critical if we are to have any hope to continue to operate the basketball program at George Washington High School.

Who we are:
With the help of a leadership team comprised of coaches, alumni, and a teacher, we have established the 501(c)(3) qualified George Washington Basketball Foundation. The purpose of this foundation is to assist in the mission of developing our student athletes into future leaders through the basketball program. Assisted by the generosity and hard work of the Law Firm of Howard Rice, et.al, The Wetherby Asset Management Group, and Charles Schwab & Co., we have begun building a brighter future for our student-athletes.

Can you help us reach our goals?
The foundation's goal is to raise a total of $300,000 over a five-year period. We will deposit the monies in various conservative financial investments, with the assistance of professional financial advisors, aiming to deliver a minimum annual return of 3% per year. This will provide us with a yearly annual income of $9,000, thus permitting GWHS to keep the basketball program in operation. Our strategy is to raise a portion of this sum through yearly fundraising efforts. Our first year's goal is $50,000. Any help that you provide today will directly help the youths who are our future.
