Dave Morey finished the weekend with a 3-2 record and defeated Jay Hahn of Great Valley by a score of 5-2 in the 5th place bout. Kris Wazlawik finished with a record of 2-2 and defeated Vince Brown of Hatboro Horsham by a score of 9-3 in the 5th place bout. Ryan Ferguson narrowly missed an opportunity to wrestle for a trip to Hershey when he lost a very close bout by a score of 3-2 to Mike Platco of Spring-Ford in the Consolation Quarterfinals. Ryan ended the weekend with a record of 2-2. Congratulations to Ryan on an outstanding season and career - he was a leader both on and off the mat and a fine Captain. Ryan wrestled against the best of the best this year - by my count he saw at least 5 state ranked wrestlers (Letts, Smith, Whitaker, Flynn, DeGaravilla, etc.) and he wrestled them all extremely tough - he may be one of the few 189 pounders to wrestle what will probably be the AA and AAA state champs (Flynn and Letts). FRIDAY Pigtail Round: Ryan Ferguson advanced to the Quarterfinals with a 5-3 victory of Bensalem's Jake Thierjung. Quarterfinal Round: Dave Morey fell to Methacton's Brad Clark by fall in 1:36. Ryan Ferguson lost by fall to #1 seed Pay Flynn of Quakertown in 0:48. Both Dave and Ryan will continue wrestling on Saturday morning. Congratulations to Kris Wazlalwik who advanced to the semi-finals with a very close 7-6 victory over Conestoga's Greg Nestel in a rematch of the Section VI final that Waz won in OT. Waz will now wrestle Tobi Showunmi of Pennsbury. Waz won all 3 of his bouts by 1 point and now posts an impressive record of 33-2 with 30 wins in a row. Dave Morey finished 2nd at 160 after falling to #1 seed Mike Schwager also from Boyertown. Ryan Ferguson finished fourth at 189 after a loss in the Consi. final to West Chester East's Craig Whitaker. Waz, Morey and Ferguson will be making the trip to Norristown HS on Friday to wrestle in the Southeast Regional Tournament which will bring the best of D1 together at last. Congratulations to Jags Mike Conroy, Anthony Coyle and Marc Masishin who did lots of wrestling on Friday and Saturday and all had a great 2005/2006 season. The Jags finished an impressive 8th place among the strong field at Spring-Ford. Only 2 Delco schools (Upper Darby and Glen Mills) finished higher and only 1 SCCL school (Great Valley) finished higher than the Jags. SATURDAY Dave Morey (160) and Kris Wazlawik (215) will both wrestle in the finals Saturday evening at Springford HS in the D-1 South Tournament. Senior captain Ryan Ferguson (189) wrestled his way back in a stacked weight class to join Dave and Kris on the mat Saturday night. Ryan will wrestle West Chester East's Craig Whitaker in the 3rd place bout. FRIDAY Jag Captains Dave Morey (160) and Kris Wazlawik (215) won their quarterfinal matches at the D-1 South Tournament on Friday 2/24 at Spring-Ford HS. Morey scored a 9-3 victory over Coatesville's Max Henderson. Kris Wazlawik defeated Chris Testa from Downingtown East in a close match by a score of 3-2. Both now move on to the Semi-final round on Saturday. Mike Conroy (125) and Ryan Ferguson (189)won their first round matches and then lost in the quarters. Conroy defeated Boyertown's Todd Speilman by a score of 6-4 and then lost to Sun Valley's Willy Mack. Ryan Ferguson scored a convincing decision over Haverford's Rob Dowd by a score of 8-1 and then lost to #1 seed Drew Smith in the quarters. Both will continue forward in the wrestlebacks on Saturday morning. Junior Anthony Coyle (130) lost a close match in the first round by a score of 4-2 to Downingtown East grappler Alex Hyrdrean. Marc Masishin (275) lost his first round match to Unionville's Pete Schilthuis by fall. Marc in a similar situation to Kris Wazlawik last year got the call to participate when another wrestler could not go due to injury. Anthony and Marc will also move into the wrestlebacks. May the force be with all Jaguars on Saturday! See the WRESTLING LINKS tab for access to UNOFFICIAL D-1 South Tournament Brackets and Seedings. Keep in mind these are subject to change prior to the start of wrestling at 5:30 in Friday. Section VI results can be accessed under the RESULTS tab. RESULTS for the week of 2/13/06 (week 12) 5 Jags qualified for the District 1 South tournament next weekend by finishing in the top 4 spots in their respective weight class at the Section VI Tournament at Conestoga HS on 2/18. Dave Morey (160)and Kris Wazlawik (215) both captured championships in their weight class. Mike Conroy finished 2nd at 125. Ryan Ferguson (189) won his Consi. final match in OT. to finish 3rd. Anthony Coyle finished 4th at 130. Congratulations to all GV wrestlers and good luck to the District qualifiers. Both Dave Morey and Kris Wazlawik have 30 wins coming out of Sectionals. Kris is riding a 27 match undefeated streak. VARSITY DUAL MEET RECORD: 14-8 Overall (5-1 in SCCL) D-1's Upper Perk. are the state team champions after a convincing defeat of D-11 power Easton for the AAA crown on Saturday at the Giant Center in Hershey. Upper Perk. defeated Nazareth on Saturday's semifinal by a mere 1 point to advance to the finals. RESULTS for the Week of 2/6/06 (week 11) The Jags downed Unionville by a score of 41-18 on 2/7 to end the SCCL season with a 5-1 record. Winners for GV by fall were Dave Morey (160), Zack Nickle (112)and Mike Conroy (125. Both Ryan Ferguson (189) and Kris Wazlawik (215) picked up victories by tech. fall. Dan Tustin (145), Justin Gualtieri (152), Jordan Wang (103 and Anthony Coyle (130) won by decision. Upper Perk and both Council Rock South and North will represent District 1 at the State Team Championships next weekend at the Giant Center in Hershey. UP downed CRS 43-12 in the D1 team final on Saturday. Council Rock North defeated Pennsbury in the 3rd place match. Upper Perk should have a very good shot at the state team title - some are speculating there could even be an all D-1 final. UP and Nazareth are on the same side of the bracket so their much awaited showdown could take place in the semis. RESULTS for the Week of 1/30/06 (Week 10) The Jags defeated West Chester East by a score of 41 to 18 on 2/3 at GVHS. Dave Morey (160), Kriz Wazlawik (215), Pat Dunlap (HWT) and Anthony Coyle all won by fall. Pat Birney (140)started the night off with a thrilling OT win. Dan Tustin (145), Jordan Wang (103), Zack Nickle (112) and Tim Luongo (135) also won by decision. Prior to the match the Jags honored the senior wrestlers and managers. Kathleen Funsten, Pat Dunlap, Rob Haughey, Tim Luongo, Pat Birney, Marc Masishin and Ryan Ferguson and their parents were all honored for their accomplishments and contributions to the success of the GV program. COLLEGE RESULTS: 2001 GV Grad and returning NCAA qualifier Jim Bertulis continued his comeback from a shoulder injury and got his first dual-meet win of the season with a 15-0 technical fall win over Clarion's Dave Gardner on 2/3 during Bloomsburg's 42-0 shutout of Clarion. Jim will wrestle again on Sunday 2/5 against Cleveland State. GV defeated Oxford by a score of 44 to 22 on 2/1 at GVHS to move their SCCL record to 4-1. Kris Wazlawik (215) won by fall as did Mike Conroy (125) who looked dominating in his return to action after a long layoff due to injury. Dave Morey (16) won by tech. fall and Pat Dunlap (HWT) won by decision. Ryan Ferguson (189), Jordan Wang (103), Zack Nickle (112), Josh Edwards (119) all won by forfeit. RESULTS for Week of 1/23/06 (Week 9) The Jags closed out a dominating performance against Kennett with a 20 second pin by Ryan Ferguson (189) and Kris Wazlawik (215)who got it done in a very efficient 7 seconds. GV won by a score of 57-17. There were a total of 8 falls recorded by Jags - Pat Dunlap (HWT), Jordadn Wang (103), Anthony Coyle (130), Tim Luongo (135), Dan Tustin (152) and Dave Morey (160) all won by fall. Mike Schwein (119) won by forfeit and Connor Price (140) won by decision. COLLEGE RESULTS: 2001 GV grad. and national qualifier Jim Bertulis Jr. returned to action for Bloomsburg Saturday 1/28 in the PSAC Championships at Slippery Rock University. Jim won his first match and then his semifinal match - both by decision - before injury defaulting in the final match for a second place finish. RESULTS for Week of 1/16/06 (Week 8) GV fell to #3 Ridley by a score of 49-18 in the old gym at GVHS on Friday 1/20. Dave Morey had the only fall for the Jags who also had wins by Anthony Coyle (130) Ryan Ferguson (189). Kris Wazlawik (215) and Pat Dunlap (HWT). RESULTS for Week of 1/9/06 (Week 7) Dave Morey and Kris Wazlawik both went 4-0 on the day as the Jags won the Chi Duals on Sat. 1/14. GV needed to go to the 4th criteria to win their match and the duals title against Downingtown East as the score was tied at 29. Dan Tustin's (145) tech. fall was the deciding factor in that match as both teams were even on team penalty points, victories and falls. On the day the Jags also defeated Glen Mills (ranked #2 in Delco Times Super 7) by a score of 40-25, host Chichester 58-11 and lost to Danville 41-27. Zack Nickle (112) had a strong day with a 3-1 record as did Anthony Coyle (130), Ryan Ferguson (189)and Junior Dan Tustin who continues to do a nice job going between 145 and 152. There are always questions about the criteria the PIAA has adopted for breaking ties - see below: Tie Breaker Criteria for Dual Meet Competition 1. Least number of team points deducted for flagrant or unsportsmanlike conduct. 2. Greater number of matches won. 3. Greater number of points for fall, defaults, forfeits or disqualifications. 4. Greater number of points for technical falls. 5. Greater number of points for major decisions. 6. Greater number of first-points scored. 7. Greater number of points for near-falls. 8. Greater number of takedowns. 9. Greater number of reversals. 10. Greater number of escapes. 11. Fewer penalties for stalling. 12. Fewer stall warnings. 13. Fewer number of points for other infractions. 14. Flip of a disk. Powered by 7 pins, the Jags downed SCCL foe Avon Grove on Wed. 1/11 by a convincing score of 51-18. There were 2 exciting matches that went to OT. Senior heavyweight Pat Dunlap escaped during an overtime rideout to win and Dan Tustin won by fall late in the 1st overtime period in no doubt the most exciting and wild match of the meet. Other Jags to win by fall were Dave Morey (160), Kris Wazlawik (215), Jordan Wang (103), Zack Nickle (112), Connor Price (140), Dan Tustin (145) and Justin Gualtieri (152). Ryan Ferguson (189) and Anthony Coyle (130) also won by decision. RANKINGS: - Jags are still #3 in the Delco Times Super 7 2/8/06) Delco Times Individual Rankings (2/8/2006) - Dave Morey #1 at 160 lbs. - Ryan Ferguson #2 at 189 lbs. - Kris Wazlawik #1 at 215 lbs. District 1 Individual Rankings (2/1/2006) - Kris Wazlawik #6 at 215 lbs. Coach V's State Rankings AAA (12/16/2005) - Dave Morey #13 at 171 lbs. It was great to see Jim Bertulis Sr. back at a match on Friday 1/6 at North Penn HS where he watched his son Jim in action against Drexel. Jim is recovering from surgery that he had on 12/12. Our best wishes to him as he continues his recovery. Wes Clevenger is also recovering from the hip replacement surgery he had recently and is reported to be doing very well. Wes will be released from the hospital early next week (1/9)and we all look forward to seeing him at a meet very soon. RESULTS Week of 1/2/06 (Week 6) The Jags lost to SCCL rival Great Valley by a score of 34-24 in a hard fought match at GV on 1/5. Winners for GV were Tim Luongo, Connor Price, Dan Tustin and Dave Morey all by decision. Pat Dunlap and Kriz Wazlawik both won by forfeits. 15th ranked Jim Bertulis returned to action for Bloomsburg on Friday 1/6 in their match against Drexel which the Dragons won by 1 point. Through the 1st half of the match Jim showed flashes of why he went to the NCAAs a year ago with a textbook takedown and quick tilt for backpoints. Mid-way through the 2nd period he was ahead by a score of 6-1 but eventually lost by fall in the 3rd. No doubt it is always a challenge to return to action mid-way through the season but look for Jim to get stronger each week going forward. RESULTS: Week of 12/26/05 (Week 5) GV finished 3rd out of 8 teams at the Snacktown Duals held on 12/30 at Hanover HS. The Jags started the day with a 47-24 victory over Pottsville (D11-AAA). Anthony Coyle, Connor Price, Alex Conover, Justin Gualtieri and Kris Wazlawik all won their matches by fall. Zack Nickle won by forfeit and Dave Morey, Marc Masishin and Jordan Wang all scored decisions. Dave Morey and Kris Wazlawik both went 5-0 on the day while Pat Dunlap returned to action with a strong 4-0 day. Jordan Wang, Zack Nickle, Anthony Coyle and Ryan Ferguson all posted 3 victories. RESULTS: Week of 12/19/05 (Week 4) GV defeated Octorara HS on 12/21 by a convincing 54-23 score to go 1-0 in the SCCL. Winners for GV were Kriz Wazlawik (FFT), Marc Masishin with a dramatic last minute reversal to win by decision, Mike Schwein (FFT), Zack Nickle (Tech. Fall), Mike Conroy and Connor Price (both by FALL), Pat Birney and Dan Tustin (both by FFT) and Dave Morey who concluded the match with a major decision. Kudos to Jag Captain Ryan Ferguson who wrestled tough against defending State Champion and recent Beast of the East Champion Mike Letts in the night's first bout. District 1 had 2 champions in this weekend's Beast of the East Tournament at the University of Delaware in Newark. Zack Kemmerer from Upper Perk took the 135 weight class and Mike Letts of Octorara had no trouble winning at 160. You can access the full individual and team results under the WRESTLING LINKS tab. RESULTS: Week of 12/12/05 (Week 3) 39th Annual Garnet Valley Holiday Tournament: Jags grapplers showed how tough they were by finishing a strong 2nd to perennial powerhouse Delone Catholic. Junior Kris Wazlawik won the 215 lb. championship while Mike Conroy (125 lb), Dave Morey (160 lb) and Ryan Ferguson (189 lb) all took 2nd place finishes. In perhaps the biggest upset of the day, Mike Conroy beat Penncrest sophmore Chuck Mulloy in their semi-final bout. Malloy is a returning state qualifier and was ranked 6th in the state in the pre-season rankings. Wazlawik continues a great start to his season which already includes a 4th place at Penn Manor and he is undefeated in dual meet action. Chesmont VS. SCCL Duals: After losing to Downingtown West by score of 53-13 in their opening match every wrestler gave their all in a tough hard fought meet against Henderson HS on 12/14. Henderson pulled it out by 1 point 31-30. Dave Morey, Kriz Wazlawik and Mike Conroy all won both of their matches. The Jags are ranked 4th in the first Delco Times Super 7 of the year. RESULTS: Week of 12/5/05 (Week 2) Junior Dave Morey finished 2nd in the 160 lb. weight class at the Penn Manor Comet Classic on 12/10. Clutch wins by Sophmore Tim Dunlap (145), Juniors Dan Tustin(152) and Dave Morey(160) in the last 3 matches of the night led the Jags to a 34-33 come from behind win over Lower Merion on Wed. 12/7. GV now moves to 1-1 in dual meet action and now head to the always tough Penn Manor Comet Tournament on Friday/Saturday. Other winners for GV include Kriz Wazlawik(215), Ryan Ferguson(189), Mike Conroy(130), Anthony Coyle(135) - his first at GV - and Bill Kleinert(171). Just a reminder that any wrestler who has not turned in his completed bio sheet please do so ASAP. GV Junior Dave Morey is ranked #14 at 171 lbs. in the PA Power Pre-Season rankings. See the WRESTLING LINKS tab for access to the full rankings. There are many Delaware County D-1 wrestlers ranked in the state. 2001 GV Grad and wrestler Jeff Carhart will join the coaching staff this year. Jeff was a great 189 pounder for the Jags during his career and is an excellent addition to an already strong staff. Jeff also had a very successful collegiate career at Williamson where he wrestled with another 2001 grad Corey Englebrake. College Results / Update: - 2005 GV Grad and former State Qualifier Chuck Nickle went 1-2 on the day for Delaware Valley at 125 lbs. on 12/3 at the York College Spartan Invitational. - 2001 Grad and nationally ranked Jim Bertulis who has been out with a shoulder injury is practicing again and expected to return to action for Bloomsburg at the Purdue Duals on 12/10. - Dave Gualtieri wrestled at 184 in the East Stroudsburg Open on 11/19. - Bloomsburg defeated Pittsburgh by a score of 17-16 on 11/15.
